Lutron vs Hunter Douglas PowerView Motorized Shades

Lutron battery shades run three to five years on replaceable D cells and live inside Lutron lighting systems; PowerView Gen 3 runs about a year per charge on a rechargeable wand and reaches Alexa, Google and HomeKit through its Gateway. Exotic Shades & Draperies, a Lutron certified dealer in Fort Lauderdale and Miami Beach, does not sell Hunter Douglas; here is the factual comparison.

The Short Answer

Two good systems built around different ideas

Lutron is a lighting-control company that makes shades; PowerView is a window-covering company's automation. That shapes everything. Lutron shades are designed to be one device among the dimmers, keypads and scenes of a Caséta, RadioRA 3 or HomeWorks system, on Lutron's own Clear Connect radio, with Triathlon and Serena battery shades that use replaceable D cells rated by Lutron at three to five years and wired Sivoia QS shades for construction projects.

PowerView Gen 3 puts a Bluetooth 5.0 radio in every shade, runs on a rechargeable battery wand or hardwired PowerView+ power, and talks to Alexa, Google, Apple HomeKit, Control4, Crestron and Savant through a PowerView Gateway. It is sold through Hunter Douglas dealers on Hunter Douglas fabrics and products such as Duette honeycomb and Silhouette. We do not sell it, so what follows sticks to published facts and to the questions clients actually ask us.

When Each Is the Right Pick

An honest fit guide

Lutron, when lighting and shading should be one system

If the home has, or will have, Caséta, RadioRA 3 or HomeWorks, Lutron shades are simply more devices on the same keypads and scenes. This is the reason integrators specify Lutron on estates and new construction, and it is most of our Lutron work.

Lutron, when you never want to charge a shade

Triathlon D cells are rated by Lutron at three to five years and take a minute to swap. Sivoia QS wired shades need no batteries at all. For a wall of oceanfront glass that moves twice a day, that matters.

PowerView, when the home already has Hunter Douglas

A house full of Duette or Silhouette on Legacy PowerView has a fabric and dealer relationship worth keeping, with the caveat that Gen 3 is a separate system from Legacy.

PowerView, when Bluetooth-first control is the preference

Each Gen 3 shade is a Bluetooth device you can drive from a phone without any hub; the Gateway comes in for voice, schedules away from home and integration.

Either, for a single room

Serena from Lutron and a PowerView shade with its remote both work as standalone motorized shades. Serena's edge is that it grows into a Caséta system later; the fabric range is the deciding factor.

What we do

As a Lutron certified dealer we specify, fabricate and install Sivoia QS, Triathlon and Palladiom with the whole Lutron fabric library, and we service Lutron systems installed by others, including motor replacement, batteries and keypad pairing. Somfy is our second line; see Lutron vs Somfy.

Good to Know

Frequently asked

Is Lutron better than Hunter Douglas PowerView?

Neither is better in every home. Lutron is the stronger choice when shades should live inside a Lutron lighting system or when you want replaceable D batteries rated at three to five years and wired Sivoia QS options for construction. PowerView Gen 3 is the natural choice for a home already on Hunter Douglas fabrics, with Bluetooth control from every shade and Gateway-based smart-home links.

How long do the batteries last on each?

Lutron states three to five years for Triathlon on replaceable D cells, assuming two cycles a day. PowerView Gen 3's rechargeable battery wand runs about a year at the same two cycles a day and can be recharged roughly 500 times, per the Residential Systems review; the internal-battery version needs a 28 inch minimum width.

Do both work with Alexa, Google and Apple Home?

Yes. Lutron reaches them through its bridge or processor (Caséta, RadioRA 3, HomeWorks). PowerView Gen 3 needs a PowerView Gateway or Gateway Pro, which also handles Control4, Savant and Crestron.

Can I mix PowerView Gen 3 with older PowerView shades?

Hunter Douglas states that Gen 3 is not backward compatible with Legacy PowerView shades or accessories; a mixed home runs two separate systems. Lutron's Caséta, RadioRA 2, RadioRA 3 and HomeWorks systems all use its Clear Connect radio, and we still service and extend RadioRA 2 homes.

Which has more fabric choice?

Lutron publishes a library of 921 colourways across solar screens, light-filtering, sheer, blackout and honeycomb fabrics, and we carry all of it. Hunter Douglas sells its own collections such as Duette and Silhouette through its dealers.

Do you sell Hunter Douglas?

No. Exotic Shades and Draperies is a Lutron certified dealer and a Somfy Expert. We can service a Hunter Douglas home's other window treatments and add Lutron or Somfy motorization to new openings, but we do not sell or program PowerView.
