The biggest opening in the room deserves more than a rattling vertical
A sliding glass door is the widest, tallest and most-used opening in a South Florida home, and it is where most window treatments fail. Blinds that block the panel you slide, a shade that stops at the handle, drapes that stack on the wrong side, fabric that fades in a season of west sun. The door is not the problem. The plan is.
Sliding doors are most of what we cover in condos and waterfront homes, from a single patio door to a whole wall of impact glass. Seven ways to cover a sliding glass door
Each one solves a different door. The right answer depends on how often you walk through it, what is on the other side of the glass, and whether the room needs to go dark.
Panel Track Blinds
Wide fabric panels that glide on a headrail and stack neatly to one side, in the same solar, translucent or blackout fabrics as our roller shades. The cleanest modern look on a door you use every day, and the natural replacement for old PVC verticals. See vertical blinds & panel tracks.
Allusion Sheer Verticals
Overlapping sheer and fabric vanes on a track. You walk straight through them while they are closed, they rotate for privacy and they turn hard sun into an even glow. Our most requested soft treatment for balcony sliders. See Allusion blinds.
Fabric Vertical Blinds
The practical classic, rebuilt with fabric vanes, quiet tracks and a wand instead of a chain. Room-darkening vanes are available for bedrooms. Economical on wide doors where the budget matters more than the styling.
Roller & Solar Shades
One wide shade, or a coupled pair on a single motor, in 1% to 10% openness screens that cut heat and glare while the water view stays. Blackout fabrics with side channels for bedrooms. The go-to for condo glass walls. See roller shades and solar shades.
Zebra Shades

Draperies on a Track
Ripplefold sheers, lined draperies or both on one ceiling track, straight or bent around a corner, motorized on Lutron Sivoia QS or Somfy Glydea. The only treatment that dresses a forty-foot glass wall in one gesture. See motorized drapes and sheer draperies.
Plantation Shutters
Bypass shutters that slide on a top track, or bi-fold shutters that fold to the side, built to the door in moisture-proof composite or hardwood. For doors used occasionally where the architecture asks for a shutter. See plantation shutters.

Two layers are common: a sheer or solar layer for the day, a lined drapery or blackout shade for evenings and sleep. We show both at the consultation with the actual fabrics.
The details that decide whether a slider works
Anyone can hang a shade over a door. The difference is in six decisions made before anything is cut.
Stack side and traffic
Every treatment stacks somewhere. We put the stack on the fixed-panel side so the panel that slides, and its handle, stay clear. Two-panel doors get a one-way draw; center-opening doors get a split draw that parts in the middle.
Handle clearance and projection
Slider handles project further than any window latch, so the fascia, cassette or track needs enough depth to clear them. We specify the projection, extend the width past the glass to stop side light, and use extension brackets or a ceiling mount where the wall above the frame is short.
Wall, ceiling or recessed
A ceiling mount makes a standard door read taller. In new construction and renovations we go further and build the shade or track into a recessed pocket so nothing shows but fabric.
Wide spans
Each fabric has a maximum roll width. Past it we couple two shades on one motor aligned to the door mullion, or move to a single drapery track that carries the whole span. No sagging tubes, no mismatched gaps.
Heat, glare and impact glass
West and south sliders take the full afternoon sun. Screen openness, fabric color and lining are chosen for the exposure, and everything mounts to the wall or ceiling, never through the impact-glass frame.
Condo and association rules
Balcony doors face the street. We check the association's exterior color rule, usually a white or off-white backing, and plan terrace doors that open outward. Building-by-building notes are in our condo guides.
Motorized for the wide span
A ten-foot shade or a wall of drapery is heavy. Motorization is what makes it a pleasure to live with: one tap, a schedule that follows the sun, a scene that opens the whole room for guests. We install Lutron and Somfy motors for shades and Lutron Sivoia QS and Somfy Glydea tracks for draperies, battery or hardwired, integrated with Lutron, Crestron and Control4 systems.

What is the best window treatment for a sliding glass door?
It depends on how the door is used. For a door you walk through all day, a panel track or Allusion sheer verticals glide aside and let you pass. For a water view you want to keep, a solar roller shade cuts glare and heat while the view stays. For a bedroom slider, a blackout roller with side channels or a lined drapery on a track gives real darkness. For openings wider than about ten feet, motorized draperies or a coupled pair of shades cover the span cleanly. Most of our clients end up with two layers: a sheer for the day and something heavier for privacy or sleep.
Can I still walk through the door when the treatment is closed?
With Allusion blinds, yes: the overlapping sheer vanes part as you walk through and fall back into place. With panel tracks and fabric verticals you slide the panels or vanes aside; with rollers you raise the shade on the operating side; with draperies you draw one panel. The trick is planning the stack on the fixed-panel side of the door so the treatment never sits in front of the panel that slides.
Which side should the treatment stack on?
On the side of the fixed panel, so the operating panel and its handle stay clear. On a two-panel slider that means a one-way draw or a one-way stack; on a three or four-panel door with a center opening we use a split draw that parts in the middle. We confirm the door configuration at the consultation before anything is cut.
How do you deal with the door handle and the lock?
Sliding door handles project further than any window latch, so an inside mount is almost never possible. We mount on the wall or ceiling above the frame and specify a fascia, cassette or track projection deep enough to clear the handle, then extend the width past the glass so light does not leak at the sides. Extension brackets, ceiling mounts and recessed pockets all solve it; the measurement is what matters.
How wide can one roller shade be on a sliding glass door?
Each fabric has a maximum roll width, and beyond it a single shade sags or telescopes. Past that point we couple two shades on one motor or hang two shades with a minimal light gap at the center, aligned to the door mullion so the split disappears. For very wide glass walls a motorized drapery on a single track is usually the cleaner answer.
Can sliding door treatments be motorized?
Yes, and for wide or heavy treatments we recommend it. Roller, solar and zebra shades run on Lutron or Somfy motors, battery or hardwired; draperies run on Lutron Sivoia QS or Somfy Glydea tracks. Everything can be scheduled, controlled from the app or by voice, and integrated with Lutron, Crestron and Control4 systems. We are certified on all of them and install the wiring plan ourselves.
Can plantation shutters go on a sliding glass door?
Yes. We build bypass shutters that slide on a top track and bi-fold shutters that fold to the side, both sized to the door with the stack planned on the fixed-panel side. They work best where the door is used occasionally and the look of a shutter matters more than a fast walk-through.
Do you work in condos with balcony sliders and impact glass?
Most of our sliding door work is in condos and waterfront homes from Sunny Isles to Boca Raton. We check association rules on exterior color (white or off-white backing on the street side is the usual requirement), plan around impact-glass frames and terrace doors, and mount without touching the glazing.
