How Crestron shades integrate with home automation systems
The motor, the wire or the radio, the processor, the controls and the scenes, from Crestron's own documents and our installs.
How Crestron shades integrate, in one answer. Each shade has a Crestron Digital QMT motor that joins the home's Crestron processor either by wire, on Cresnet, or by radio, on infiNET EX. Once the integrator commissions it into Crestron Home, the shade answers to the same keypads, touch screens and Crestron Home app as the lights and the climate, and it becomes part of scenes and schedules: sunrise, sunset, away, cinema.
- The motor. Crestron's Digital QMT motors come in a Cresnet version (-CN) and an infiNET EX version (-EX): the QMT3 at 3/4 Nm for roller shades from 17.5 to 96 in, the QMT5 at 4 Nm for larger ones, and the CSM-QMTDC-DRP-3 for drapery tracks. They run on 24 V DC from a Crestron power supply; the CSA-PWS10S-HUB-ENET powers ten motors and adds an Ethernet-to-Cresnet bridge and hub. Battery-powered shades are offered too.
- The connection. Cresnet is Crestron's 4-wire network: an 18 AWG pair carries 24 V DC power and ground, a 22 AWG shielded twisted pair carries two-way data, home-run or daisy-chained, up to about 3,000 ft per run. infiNET EX is Crestron's two-way 2.4 GHz mesh radio (IEEE 802.15.4): each device relays commands to its neighbours, up to 100 devices per network, through an infiNET EX gateway. An infiNET EX motor still takes a wire for its 24 V power.
- The processor. The motors are commissioned into the home's Crestron processor running Crestron Home, usually with the client's integrator, and from then on the shade is one more device in the house programme.
- The controls. The same keypads and touch panels that run the rest of the home, the Crestron Home app room by room, and remotes.
- Scenes and schedules. "Good Morning" raises the bedroom shades as the lights warm, "Cinema" drops the blackout as the screen comes down, "Away" manages the heat while the house is empty, and sunrise and sunset schedules run on their own.
- Other brands. Lutron shades join Crestron natively through Caséta, RadioRA 3 or HomeWorks, and Somfy motors through the TaHoma integration (which to choose: Lutron vs Crestron). At Trump Tower III in Sunny Isles Beach, our Crestron rollers and Crestron drapery track were commissioned into the home's existing Control4 system.
How do Crestron shades integrate with home automation systems?
Each shade's Crestron Digital QMT motor connects to the home's Crestron processor by wire on Cresnet or by radio on infiNET EX. Commissioned into Crestron Home by the integrator, the shades answer to the same keypads, touch screens and Crestron Home app as the lights and climate, and run in scenes and schedules such as sunrise, sunset, away and cinema. Lutron and Somfy shades can join a Crestron home too, through Lutron's systems and Somfy's TaHoma.
What is the difference between Cresnet and infiNET EX Crestron shades?
Cresnet is Crestron's wired 4-wire network, carrying 24 V DC power and two-way data on one cable, up to about 3,000 ft per run; it suits new construction. infiNET EX is Crestron's two-way 2.4 GHz mesh radio, up to 100 devices per network through a gateway; it suits finished homes, although the motor still needs a wire for its 24 V power. Battery-powered Crestron shades avoid the power wire.
Do Crestron shades need wiring?
Wired Cresnet shades need a Cresnet cable to each motor, which is why they are specified in new construction. infiNET EX shades communicate by radio but still take 24 V power from a Crestron supply. Retrofits usually use battery or plug-in motors, settled before the shade is made because the motor family decides the control system.

The motor moves the shade. The fabric decides the light.
On a Crestron shade the fabric is the same Mermet or Phifer screen we put on any tube, and its published numbers do the real work. Openness, 1% to 10%, sets the view and the daylight. Colour sets what happens to the sun's energy: a white 3% E Screen reflects 73% of it and passes 13% of daylight, the same weave in Charcoal/Grey reflects 10%, absorbs 85% and gives a far sharper view (Lutron rates them 17% and 42% view-through). A blackout passes nothing, and its street-side colour still decides the heat. Crestron's fabric program publishes the same absorption, reflectance and transmittance figures for each of its colourways.
