Founded 2016 in Sweden

A box in the ceiling, specified before the ceiling exists

Blindspace makes one thing well: aluminum boxes and profiles that go into a ceiling or wall while the building is open, so that a roller shade or a drapery track can be installed later from below and read as a hairline once the room is finished. Blindspace AB was founded in 2016 at the historic Nääs Fabriker cotton mill in Sweden and is based in Kungsbacka. It sells through dealers (we are one), and it publishes a technical drawing for every box and shade-system combination it has measured, in PDF and DWG, in millimeters and, for much of the range, in inches.

That library is why we specify it. A recessed shade is only as good as the match between the pocket and the shade that goes in it, and Blindspace has already drawn the Lutron R64 in an S100x100, the R100 in an S130x130, the R225 dual bracket in a C220x360 and the Somfy Glydea in a TrackTrim. We read the drawing, size the box, hand the same sheet to the framing contractor, and come back after paint with the shade. The pages below are that library, filtered to the systems we are certified on and written for the people who have to detail it: architects, designers, builders and the owners who notice a quarter inch.

Which Box for Which System

The combinations for the systems we install

Blindspace's published maximum shade sizes for the systems we install, read from its drawings. Somfy-motorized shades use the unbranded standard and large roller rows: Somfy makes the motor, not the shade, and the Sonesse motor goes inside the tube of whichever roller it drives, so the box follows the roller.

From Drawing to Fabric

How a Blindspace project runs with us

Design stage

We take the window schedule and the shade or drapery system for each opening, choose the box from the Blindspace drawing for that system and issue the drawing set to the architect.

Framing

The boxes and profiles arrive before the ceiling closes. We coordinate the blocking, the power and control wiring at the motor end and the cover orientation with the framing contractor.

Plaster and paint

The skim-coat flanges are feathered in and the cover is painted with the ceiling. Nothing of ours is in the way; the pocket is closed and protected.

Shades and draperies

After paint we come back with the shades, tracks and draperies, install from below, program the motors and align every hem bar across the room.

Good to Know

Blindspace: frequently asked

What is Blindspace?

Blindspace is a Swedish manufacturer (Blindspace AB, founded in 2016) of aluminum concealment boxes and plaster-in track profiles. The boxes are installed during construction, above or around the window, and are closed by a hinged cover; the shade or the drapery track is installed after paint, from below. The company sells through dealers, and it publishes a technical drawing for every box and shade-system combination it has measured, which is what the tables on these pages are built from.

Which Blindspace products do you install in South Florida?

The S Series standard boxes (S100x100 and S130x130), the C Series custom boxes for dual, blackout, skylight, corner and oversize shades, and the TrackTrim and TrackTrim Click profiles for recessed drapery tracks. We specify the box from the shade system that will go in it, coordinate it with the framing contractor, and install the shade or drapery once the room is finished.

Which shade systems fit a Blindspace box?

Any roller, zip, cellular or tensioned shade whose roll-up fits the box. Blindspace publishes the maximum width and drop for each system it has drawn: for the systems we install, that is Lutron R20, R64, R100, R150 and R225 rollers, Lutron QS 100 roof shades, Crestron ARCH3 and ARCH5, and standard and large rollers for Somfy-driven shades. The S Series and C Series pages list every one with its figures.

Do I have to decide on Blindspace before the drywall?

Yes. The box is framed in and the flanges are skim-coated, so the decision belongs at the design stage and the box arrives before the ceiling closes. A future-proof box with a closed cover costs a fraction of opening a finished ceiling later; the S Series and C Series both offer that configuration.

Does a motorized Lutron or Somfy shade need a bigger pocket than a manual one?

No. The motor sits inside the shade tube in every system we install, so the pocket is sized by the tube and fabric roll, not by the motor; Blindspace's drawing for a chain-operated standard roller gives the same box and the same maximum size as the motorized one. What changes between systems is the bracket and hem bar, which is why Blindspace draws each one separately and we size the box from that drawing rather than from a rule of thumb.

Can a drapery track and a roller shade share one recess?

Yes. Blindspace draws the S100x100 and S130x130 boxes combined with a TrackTrim profile (the S100x100+TT and S130x130+TT drawings) so a roller shade and a drapery hang from the same ceiling slot, with the corner versions for butted and mitered boxes. It suits a bedroom that wants a blackout roller behind a sheer drapery.

Who owns the drawings and where do they come from?

Blindspace does; it publishes them for free download on its own site, in PDF and DWG, in millimeters and inches. The figures on our pages are read from those drawings and from the Blindspace product sheets. For a project, we send the drawing of the exact box and system combination, and we confirm every combination against the current Blindspace and shade-system drawings before anything is ordered.

Where do you install Blindspace systems?

Across Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties: Fort Lauderdale, Miami, Miami Beach, Sunny Isles, Aventura, Hollywood, Pompano Beach, Boca Raton, Delray Beach and West Palm Beach, in new construction and major renovations where the ceiling is still open.
