How to Program Crestron Shade Motors
Set the limits, reverse the direction, join the system and read the red flash codes on Crestron QMT shade motors, battery shades and the drapery track motor, and the lights on C2N-SDC controllers.
Find your motor, then follow its steps
Crestron splits shade programming in two. At the motor, three buttons set the direction and the stopping points and check the network link. Keypads, remotes, scenes and the app are set up with Crestron's programming software, which Crestron licenses to its dealers and service providers, so that part belongs to the home's Crestron dealer or integrator; we commission the shades with them. This page covers the motor side.
How we wrote this page. Every step comes from Crestron's programming guides, product manuals and design guide, linked at the end of each section. Where Crestron's documents give different timings for different products, each product gets its own. Updated October 2026.
Common questions, short answers
How do I set the limits on a Crestron QMT shade motor?
Press and hold SET for 4 seconds until the light alternates amber and green. Press DN for the lower limit or UP for the upper, move the shade with UP and DN, then hold SET 4 seconds until the light turns solid red. Setup ends after 8 seconds without a press.
Full stepsHow do I pair a Crestron battery shade?
Have the gateway put in Acquire mode first. Only then, on the motor, tap SET three times, then hold it until the light flashes white and release. It flashes slowly while searching and stays on 5 seconds once joined; quick flashing means it failed. Started while no gateway is in Acquire mode, this takes the shade off its network.
Full stepsHow do I reverse a Crestron shade motor?
On a wired QMT motor, press DN first: if the shade goes down, the direction is right. Only if it goes up, hold SET for 10 seconds until the red light comes on for 3 seconds, then set both limits again, because reversing erases them. Crestron's battery shade manual gives no button reversal: if it runs backward, the motor is on the wrong side, and the shade is reinstalled with the motor on the left (installer work).
Full stepsHow do I change the batteries in a Crestron battery shade?
With the shade stopped, disconnect the motor cable, pull and rotate the pack out of the fascia and slide the door to OPEN. Fit 8 new 1.5 V alkaline D cells as marked, close the door, rotate the pack back until it clicks and reconnect the cable once: connecting and disconnecting it repeatedly is Crestron's power-cycle Acquire sequence.
Full stepsWhy is my Crestron shade motor flashing red?
Count the flashes either side of the 1-second pause: three, pause, one (code 3-1) means the limits are not set; 3-3 and 3-4 point to an obstruction, friction or overload; 3-5 means it has run too much in a short time, so let it rest; 2-1 and 2-2 are network problems for your Crestron dealer. A slow red flash means the motor is not talking to the control system.
Full stepsWhich Crestron motor do you have?
Every Crestron shade motor has three buttons and a light on its head; the motor family tells you which steps apply.
| Family | Models | How to tell | Go to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Digital QMT shade motors | QMT3 (CSM-QMTDC-163-1) and QMT5 (CSM-QMTDC-250-4, -275-4), -CN or -EX, and CSMI -EX versions | UP, SET and DN on the motor head; -CN motors have a four-wire lead (Cresnet), -EX motors two wires (infiNET EX wireless) | Steps |
| Battery roller shade | CS-SHADE-ROLLER-BATT | The same three buttons plus an 8 D-cell battery pack in the fascia or under a decorative cover | Steps |
| Drapery track motor | CSM-QMTDC-DRP-3-CN / -EX on CSS-DRAPERY | Buttons for close, configure (a wrench) and open, and a lever that unlocks the motor from the pulley | Steps |
| Controllers for other motors | C2N-SDC (120 Vac), C2N-SDC-DC (24 V DC) | A wall plate with up and down buttons for Motor 1 and Motor 2 and a SETUP button | Steps |
Crestron Digital QMT shade motors (QMT3 and QMT5)
Models: QMT3 (CSM-QMTDC-163-1-CN, CSM-QMTDC-163-1-EX, CSMI-QMTDC-163-1-EX) and QMT5 (CSM-QMTDC-250-4 and CSM-QMTDC-275-4, -CN or -EX, and their CSMI -EX versions); the CS-SHADE-ROLLER-HSHEER motorized sheer uses the same steps.
These motors run on 24 V DC from a Crestron power supply and take commands from the home's Crestron system: -CN models over Cresnet (Crestron's wired network), -EX models over infiNET EX (wireless). At the motor you can set the direction and limits and check the connection. Keypads, remotes, scenes and the app are set up with Crestron's programming software, which Crestron licenses to its dealers and service providers, so that part is done by the home's Crestron dealer or integrator.
How to tell you have one: three buttons on the motor head, UP, SET and DN, with UP closest to a multicolor light. A -CN motor has a four-wire lead (red, white, blue, black); an -EX motor has two wires (red, black).
You need: access to the motor end of the shade, and for -EX motors a Crestron infiNET EX gateway. Each motor needs its own output on a Crestron power supply.
Check the direction
- Press DN to lower the shade about 1 inch. If the shade goes down, the direction is right: stop here.
- Only if it went up: press and hold SET for 10 seconds. The red light comes on for 3 seconds.
- Set both limits again (steps): reversing erases them.
Set or change the upper and lower limits
- Press and hold SET for 4 seconds. The light alternates amber and green (Limit Setup mode).
- Press and release DN for the lower limit (green light flashes) or UP for the upper limit (amber light flashes).
- Move the shade with UP and DN to where it should stop.
- Press and hold SET for 4 seconds. The light turns solid red: saved.
Limit Setup mode ends after 8 seconds without a press. If the other limit is not set, the motor goes straight into Limit Setup for it. On a horizontal sheer, the lower limit is the point just before the hem bar tilts.
Join the system or check the connection
What it takes: -CN motors need a matching Net ID in the Crestron program. -EX motors join infiNET EX when acquired: with one gateway in Acquire mode, tap SET three times, then hold it until the white light flashes once; the light stays on 5 seconds once joined.
Installer workWe do this at installation and on service calls.
To check an -EX motor, tap SET three times, then hold it. Let go within 2 seconds: holding on until the light flashes white starts Acquire mode, and if no gateway is in Acquire mode the motor leaves its network and has to be acquired again. On for 5 seconds: talking to the control system. Two flashes: joined before but not reaching the gateway. One flash: not joined.
What the motor light means
- Green: slow flash while moving from a motor button press; solid when talking to the program.
- Red, slow flash: not talking to the control system.
- Blue: firmware update (flashing) or Bootloader mode (solid). White, fast flash: Identify mode.
- Red codes: count the flashes either side of a 1-second pause. Three, pause, one is code 3-1, limits not set.
Crestron gives no favorite or factory-reset procedure at the motor.
Replace a QMT motor
What it takes: the shade comes out of its brackets, the motor is pulled out by its head (never the wire), and direction, limits and network are set again.
Installer workWe do this at installation and on service calls.
Careful: watch the shade whenever it moves during setup, ready to stop it, and check that the fabric rolls up straight.
Troubleshooting: Crestron QMT motors
| What you see | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| All lights off, no movement | No power, or power connection reversed | Have the power supply connections checked. |
| Moves the opposite way | Direction reversed | Reverse it (steps), then set the limits. |
| Code 3-1, or stops short of the top or bottom | Limits not set or need changing | Set the limits (steps). |
| Code 3-5, or stops now and then | Motor duty cycle exceeded: it has run too much | Let it rest, then run it less often. |
| Code 3-3 or 3-4, or stops now and then | Obstruction, friction or overload | Clear obstacles and check that parts run smoothly; the installer checks the fabric weight. |
| Code 2-1 or 2-2, or solid blue | Network or Net ID problem, or stuck in Bootloader mode | Your Crestron dealer checks the connection or reloads firmware. |
| Fabric hangs over one side as it rolls (telescoping) | Usually an out-of-level mounting surface | Stop it; bracket adjustment or shim tape (installer work). |

Crestron battery roller shades (CS-SHADE-ROLLER-BATT)
Models: CS-SHADE-ROLLER-BATT with the CSM-QMTDC-163-1-SG or CSMI-QMTDC-163-1-SG motor.
These shades run on eight D-cell batteries and talk to the Crestron system over SG wireless through a CEN-GW1 or CENI-GW1 gateway. They ship with both limits set and look for a gateway the first time they get power. You can pair the shade, adjust its limits and change the batteries; the Crestron program is your dealer's work.
How to tell you have one: the same UP, SET and DN buttons as the wired motors, plus a battery pack: in the fascia with CSA-ARCH3 brackets, or under a decorative cover with CSA-DECOR3 brackets. The motor belongs at the left end of the window.
You need: 8 new 1.5 V alkaline D cells of the 10-year type, and the gateway in Acquire mode. The buttons are easier to reach with the fascia off.
Pair the shade to the Crestron gateway
A new shade joins by itself if the gateway is in Acquire mode before the batteries are connected. Otherwise:
- Have the gateway put in Acquire mode (one gateway at a time).
- Only once the gateway is in Acquire mode: tap SET three times, then press and hold it until the light flashes white (up to 10 seconds).
- Release. The light flashes white slowly while the shade searches.
- On for 5 seconds: joined. Quick flashing: failed; press SET, check that the gateway is in Acquire mode and in range, and retry.
- Take the gateway out of Acquire mode when every shade has joined.
Fascia on? Only once the gateway is in Acquire mode: disconnect the battery pack, then twice connect it, wait 5 seconds and disconnect it. Connect it a third time: the shade enters Acquire mode. To leave a network, start Acquire mode while no gateway is in Acquire mode.
Check the wireless connection
Tap SET three times, then hold it. Let go within 2 seconds: holding on until the light flashes white starts Acquire mode, and if no gateway is in Acquire mode the shade leaves its network and has to be acquired again. White light on 5 seconds: talking to the control system. Three flashes: the gateway is not talking to the control system. Two: not reaching the gateway. One: not joined.
Change the upper or lower limit
Limit Setup mode ends after 120 seconds without a button press.
- Press and hold SET for 4 seconds. The light alternates amber and green.
- Press DN for the lower limit (green light flashes) or UP for the upper limit (amber light flashes).
- Move the shade with UP and DN to where it should stop.
- Press and hold SET for 4 seconds. The light turns solid red: saved.
- Run several full open and close cycles to check.
Change the batteries
Crestron estimates about 3 years per set at two cycles a day, less with heat or shades over 60 in tall. When the shade runs slower than usual, replace them. Fascia pack (CSA-ARCH3):
- With the shade stopped, rotate the connector bracket down and disconnect the motor cable.
- Pull and rotate the pack fully out of the fascia.
- Slide the battery door to OPEN and remove the old batteries.
- Insert 8 new D cells as marked.
- Slide the door to CLOSE until it clicks, then rotate the pack into the fascia until it clicks.
- Reconnect the motor cable once: connecting and disconnecting the pack repeatedly is Crestron's power-cycle Acquire sequence.
Separate pack (CSA-DECOR3): disconnect it from the motor, twist the positive end cap counterclockwise, replace all 8 cells as marked, twist the cap back clockwise and reconnect it once.
Careful: the wrong batteries can permanently damage the motor; do not mix old and new cells, brands or types. Disconnecting the pack while the shade moves can erase its limits.
Troubleshooting: Crestron battery shades
| What you see | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Runs slower than usual | Batteries nearly used up | Replace all 8 (steps). |
| All lights off, no movement | No power, or batteries reversed or used up | Check the pack connection and battery orientation; if the batteries are used up, fit 8 new ones. |
| Moves the opposite way | Motor installed on the wrong side | Have the shade reinstalled with the motor on the left; the manual gives no button reversal. |
| Wrong stopping points after a battery change | Limits lost: pack disconnected while moving | Set the limits (steps). |
| Code 3-5, or stops now and then | Motor duty cycle exceeded (rated 8 minutes on, 40 minutes off at 3/4 Nm) | Let it rest, then run it less often. |
| Code 3-3 or 3-4, or stops now and then | Obstruction, friction or overload | Clear obstacles and check that parts run smoothly; the installer checks the fabric weight. |
| Fabric shifts sideways as it rolls | Not level, bumping something, drafts or debris | Clear obstructions and drafts; leveling is installer work. |

Crestron drapery track motor (CSM-QMTDC-DRP-3)
Models: CSM-QMTDC-DRP-3-CN and CSM-QMTDC-DRP-3-EX on the CSS-DRAPERY track.
This motor drives the track through its pulley and takes Crestron commands over Cresnet (-CN) or infiNET EX (-EX). It finds the track ends itself; its buttons set direction, custom stops, speed and pull-to-start force. Joining the system is your Crestron dealer's work.
How to tell you have one: three buttons, close (filled dot), configure (wrench) and open (open circle), with a light, and a lever that unlocks the motor from the pulley.
Check the direction
- Press open or close. If the fabric moves the way you pressed, the direction is right: stop here.
- Only if it moved the other way: press and hold configure for 10 seconds. The red light comes on for 3 seconds; the limits are erased and Find Limits starts by itself.
Let the motor find the ends of the track
Find Limits teaches the motor its hard limits (the track ends or a major obstruction). Hang the fabric first.
- Press and hold open and close together for 10 seconds. The purple light blinks.
- The motor runs to its close limit, then its open limit, then runs one open and close cycle.
Set custom open and close positions
For stopping short of the track ends. Limit Setup mode ends after 8 seconds without a press.
- Press and hold configure for 4 seconds. The light alternates amber and green.
- Press and release close for the closed position (green light blinks) or open for the open position (amber light blinks).
- Move the fabric with open and close to the position you want.
- Press and hold configure for 4 seconds. The light turns solid red: saved.
Change the speed or the pull-to-start sensitivity
- Press and hold open and configure (speed: light turns blue) or close and configure (Touch Sensitivity: light turns purple) for 4 seconds.
- Speed: pull the fabric at the speed you want for 2 seconds. Touch Sensitivity: pull it with the force the motor should react to.
- The light turns off: stored. Test it, and repeat if needed.
Each mode ends after 30 seconds without input.
Join the system or replace the motor
What it takes: an -EX motor is acquired like the shade motors, with configure in place of SET; a replacement motor unlocks from the pulley with its lever.
Installer workWe do this at installation and on service calls.
Troubleshooting: Crestron drapery motor
| What you see | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| After a power outage it runs fully closed first, light blinking purple | Find Location mode: relearning its position | Nothing; it then goes where you sent it. |
| Moves the opposite way | Direction reversed | Reverse it (steps). |
| Code 3-1, or wrong stopping points after Find Limits | Limits not set, or Find Limits ran before the fabric was hung | Run Find Limits (steps). |
| Code 3-5, or stops now and then | Motor duty cycle exceeded: it has run too much | Let it rest, then run it less often. |
| Code 3-3 or 3-4, or stops now and then | Obstruction or friction | Clear obstacles; check that parts are aligned and run smoothly. |
| Code 2-1 or 2-2, or solid blue | Network or Net ID problem, or stuck in Bootloader mode | Your Crestron dealer checks the connection or reloads firmware. |

Crestron controllers for other motors (C2N-SDC and C2N-SDC-DC)
Models: C2N-SDC (120 Vac) and C2N-SDC-DC (24 V DC).
These Cresnet modules let a Crestron system run motors from other makers: the C2N-SDC drives two conventional three-wire 120 Vac motors, the C2N-SDC-DC two 2-wire 24 V DC motors.
How to tell you have one: a wall plate with up and down buttons for Motor 1 and Motor 2, PWR and NET lights, and a SETUP button.
What an owner needs to know
- Each motor runs from its up and down buttons on the wall plate.
- Limits live in the motor, not the controller: change them with the motor maker's instructions.
What it takes: the Net ID is set with the SETUP button and Crestron Toolbox to match the program; on the C2N-SDC-DC, a motor running backward is fixed by swapping its two wires.
Installer workWe do this at installation and on service calls.
Troubleshooting: Crestron controllers
| What you see | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Green PWR light (power from Cresnet) off | Wrong power supply, or no power | Use a Crestron power supply; check that the NET cables are secure. |
| Yellow NET light (identified in the program) off | Net ID mismatch, or a loose network cable | Your dealer checks the Net ID and cable. |
| SETUP light flashing or on steady (C2N-SDC-DC) | Firmware downloading, or none loaded | Wait for the download; if it stays that way, cycle power or have firmware loaded. |

Frequently asked
Can I program my Crestron shades without my Crestron dealer?
Partly. At the motor you can test the direction, set the upper and lower limits and check the network connection with the three buttons, and a battery shade pairs once the gateway is in Acquire mode. Keypads, remotes, scenes and the app are set up with Crestron's programming software, which Crestron licenses to its dealers and service providers, so that part is done by the home's Crestron dealer or integrator.
Is there a factory reset for a Crestron QMT shade motor?
Crestron's motor documents give no factory-reset procedure. Reversing the direction (SET held for 10 seconds) erases both limits, and starting Acquire mode while no gateway is in Acquire mode takes a wireless motor (-EX or battery) off its network. After either, the limits are set again at the motor or the motor is acquired again.
How long do the batteries last in a Crestron battery shade?
Crestron estimates about 3 years with eight 1.5 V alkaline D cells of the 10-year type, at two open and close cycles a day. High temperatures and shades taller than 60 in shorten that. When the batteries are nearly used up the shade runs slower than usual; replace all eight, without mixing old and new cells, brands or types.
Why does my Crestron drapery close all the way after a power outage?
That is Find Location mode. The drapery can be moved by hand during an outage, so when power returns the motor runs to its full close limit on the first command, then goes where you sent it. The light blinks purple while it does this.
My Crestron shade stops short of the sill. How do I fix it?
Change the lower limit at the motor: hold SET for 4 seconds until the light alternates amber and green, press DN, move the shade with UP and DN to the new stopping point, then hold SET for 4 seconds until the light turns solid red. On wired motors the setup ends after 8 seconds without a press; on battery shades, after 120 seconds.
Why is the fabric on my Crestron shade rolling up crooked?
Crestron calls this telescoping: the fabric rolls up off-square and hangs over one side of the tube. The most common cause is a mounting surface that is not level. Stop the shade; Crestron brackets have built-in adjustments and shim tape is sometimes needed, which is installer work.
Can a Crestron system run shades from other brands?
Yes, through a C2N-SDC controller (two conventional three-wire 120 Vac motors) or a C2N-SDC-DC (two 2-wire 24 V DC motors). The motors keep their own limits, set with their maker's instructions, and the controller's Net ID is set with Crestron Toolbox to match the Crestron program.
