Find your motor, then follow its maker's steps

Every motorized shade or drapery stores the same few things: which remotes it obeys, where it stops at the top and bottom, which way is up, and usually one favorite position. How you change them depends on the brand and the family of motor, so start by identifying yours. The six motor brands on our site each have their own guide with step-by-step programming, a troubleshooting table and links to the manufacturer's own instructions.

How we wrote these guides. Every step in these guides comes from the manufacturer's own instructions (for Dooya, its manual as filed with the FCC), cited under each section. Where two of a maker's documents disagree, we follow the newer one, describe the step by what the motor does (for example, hold until the shade jogs) or leave the step out. Updated October 2026.

The Words

What every motor stores, and what each brand calls it

Pairing
Teaching a motor to obey a remote, wall switch or hub. Somfy starts it with PROG, Lutron with the Shade Button and a Pico, VTi with the H button and P, Dooya with P1 and STOP, Forest with the button under the motor and OPEN.
Limits
The top and bottom (or open and closed) stopping points. Forest calls them end positions; Somfy's drapery motors learn their end stops by themselves.
Favorite
One stored position between the limits: "my" on Somfy, Favorite on Lutron, FAV on VTi, the preferred position on Dooya. Crestron gives no favorite at the motor, and Forest's Shuttle manuals describe none.
Jog
A brief up-and-down (or back-and-forth) move that confirms a step on Somfy, VTi and Dooya motors and on Forest's Roman and roller motors. Lutron and Crestron motors and the Forest Shuttle mostly answer with lights instead.
Direction
Which button raises the shade. Most motors reverse from the remote or a button; the Crestron battery shade does not, its motor belongs at the left end.
Reset
Erases settings. How much it erases depends on the brand: see the table below before you do one.
Before You Start

Seven habits that keep programming simple

  • Work on one shade at a time. Somfy asks you to power only the motor you are programming, Maestria setup starts with every other screen disconnected, and VTi motors can be put to sleep so the others ignore the remote.
  • Charge the motor and fit a fresh battery in the remote first. A weak battery, in the motor or the remote, is the first thing most of these makers' troubleshooting tables check.
  • On a multi-channel remote, select the shade's channel before every step, and never use a group channel to program one shade.
  • Stand close. Somfy motors in programming mode listen at reduced range, and Somfy Zigbee pairing works within 5 feet.
  • Let go at the right moment. On Somfy, VTi, Dooya and Forest RBS iOn motors the same button held longer does something else, up to a full reset.
  • Never cut or lengthen an antenna wire, and keep a Somfy power cord that doubles as the antenna at least 12 inches long.
  • Keep people clear while the shade or drapery moves during setup, and watch it so you can stop it.
Resets

How each brand resets, and what it erases

A reset is the last step to try, not the first. Some erase only the remotes; others erase the stopping points too, and then the shade has to be set up again.

Troubleshooting

Common problems, and where to look first

The same symptoms come up on every brand. Start with the checks in the middle column, then open the guide for your motor.

What you seeCheck firstBrand steps
The shade ignores the remoteThe remote's battery, then the motor's battery or power, then the pairing: a reset, or adding a Somfy Zigbee motor to a TaHoma, can remove remotes. Lutron shades already in a system pair through the app.Somfy · Lutron · Dooya
It moves only while you hold the buttonThe motor is in setting mode or its limits are not set yet: finish the setup, or set the limits. A Forest RBS iOn with its limits set may have been switched to step-by-step mode: Prg, Stop, Stop switches it back. On a blind in tilting mode, holding tilts the slats and a brief press runs it to the limit: that is normal.Somfy · Forest RBS iOn
It stops too soon or too lateA limit needs changing. Every brand has a limit adjustment, at the motor or from the remote.Somfy · Lutron · Crestron · VTi
It moves the wrong wayThe direction is reversed. On Crestron QMT motors, reversing erases the limits, so set them again afterwards.Crestron · VTi · Dooya
It stops after a lot of useThe motor is protecting itself: Somfy motors cool down and work again, and Crestron shows code 3-5 when a motor has run too much. Let it rest. If it keeps happening, have the installation checked.Somfy · Crestron
A light is blinking redUsually a low battery or an obstacle, but each brand has its own code: read the light table for your motor.Somfy WireFree · Lutron · Crestron
Several shades move at onceThey share a channel or a group channel. Select a single channel, or put the others to sleep while you program one.VTi · Dooya
A drapery runs to the end first after a power outageNormal on some drapery motors: Crestron's Find Location mode and Lutron's pull-to-start draperies recalibrate on the first move.Crestron · Lutron
Batteries

How long a charge or a set of batteries lasts

These are the makers' own figures, each on the maker's own assumptions (moves a day where stated). A shade that runs more often needs charging sooner.

MotorMaker's figure
Somfy WireFreeAbout a year per charge with one up-and-down cycle a day (Roll Up 24: twice a year), by Somfy's rating
Lutron TriathlonThree to five years on D batteries, by Lutron's statement
Crestron battery shadeAbout 3 years on eight D cells at two cycles a day, by Crestron's estimate
Vertilux VTi RE-LIONMore than half a year per charge, by Vertilux's rating
Forest Shuttle iOn3 to 4 months between charges, by Forest's estimate
Forest RBS iOnAbout 6 months per charge at one up and one down a day, by Forest's estimate

Good to Know

Frequently asked

How do I reprogram a motorized shade remote?

Pair it from a remote that already works, or from the button on the motor. On Somfy RTS shades, hold PROG on a working remote until the shade jogs, then briefly press PROG on the new one. On Lutron Triathlon and Serena, tap the Shade Button and hold Close on the Pico. On VTi motors, press H on the motor until it jogs and then P on the remote; on Dooya, hold P1 for 2 seconds until it jogs, release it, then within 10 seconds hold STOP on the remote for 2 seconds. On VTi and Dooya, the same steps with a remote that is already paired unpair it. Each brand guide has the full steps.

How do I reset a motorized shade?

Each brand resets differently and erases different things. On Somfy head-button RTS motors you count jogs: two erase the remotes, three erase everything. A Lutron Triathlon reset keeps the limits. A VTi reset erases every setting; a Dooya reset returns the motor to factory mode, so remotes and limits must be set again; and Crestron's documents give no factory reset for QMT motors. Check the reset table before you start, because a full reset means setting the limits again.

Why did my motorized shade stop working?

Start with the remote's battery, then the motor's battery or power. If the motor has a light, its color and blink count tell you more: on most brands red points to a low battery or an obstacle. A shade that stops after a lot of use is often in thermal protection and works again once it cools down. If the motor was reset recently, or a Somfy Zigbee motor was added to a TaHoma, the remote may need pairing again.

What does it mean when a shade jogs?

A jog is a brief up-and-down move, or back-and-forth on a drapery, that a motor makes to confirm a programming step. Somfy, VTi and Dooya motors and Forest's Roman and roller motors confirm with jogs; Lutron and Crestron motors and the Forest Shuttle mostly confirm with lights. Counting jogs matters, because the same button held longer does something else. On Somfy head-button RTS motors each extra jog erases more. On VTi, Dooya and Forest RBS iOn motors the shorter holds pair a remote, put the motor to sleep, switch off its radio or reverse it, and only the longest hold resets the motor (VTi and RBS iOn: every setting; Dooya: back to factory mode).

Can you program a motor you did not install?

Yes. We service and reprogram motorized systems, including ones we did not install. Call 954-881-9331 or send us a message with the brand and, if you can see it, the model of the motor.

Do I need an app or a hub to program my shades?

Not for the basics. Somfy RTS, Lutron with a Pico, VTi, Dooya and Forest motors pair and set their limits with a remote or the motor's own buttons. A hub adds the app, schedules and voice: Somfy TaHoma, a Lutron Caseta hub, the VTi SmartHub PLUS, the Forest Wi-Fi dongle or a Bond Bridge Pro. Crestron systems are programmed by the home's Crestron dealer.

How long do motorized shade batteries last?

It depends on the motor and on how often it runs. By the makers' own figures: Somfy WireFree about a year per charge, Lutron Triathlon three to five years on D batteries, a Crestron battery shade about 3 years, a Vertilux VTi RE-LION more than half a year, a Forest Shuttle iOn 3 to 4 months. Somfy's Roll Up 24 needs charging about twice a year.
