Find your motor, then follow its steps

Lutron shades program in one of two ways. Triathlon, Serena and Palladiom Wire-Free shades have a single Shade Button and are set up with a Pico remote. Sivoia QS, Sivoia QS Wireless and wired Palladiom have a four-button drive, and in RadioRA 3 and HomeWorks homes they are programmed by a trained professional in Lutron Designer. Find your line in the table, then follow its steps.

How we wrote this page. Every step comes from Lutron's installation guides, application notes and support articles; the main documents are linked at the end of each section. Where Lutron's documents disagree, we describe the step by what the Shade Button light does. Work that needs Lutron's professional software or special tools, or that we treat as installer work, is marked as installer work. Updated October 2026.

Quick Answers

Common questions, short answers

How do I pair a Pico remote to my Lutron shade?

On Triathlon, Serena and Palladiom Wire-Free shades, tap the Shade Button so it lights solid green, then hold Close on the Pico for about 10 seconds, until the Shade Button flashes. If the light goes out within a second, the shade is already in a Lutron system: add the Pico in the Lutron app, or in Lutron Designer for RadioRA 3 and HomeWorks. A factory default frees the shade for a Pico on its own, but removes it from the app or system.

Full steps

How do I reset a Lutron Triathlon shade?

Tap the Shade Button quickly three times, holding after the third tap until the light blinks green rapidly. Let go and immediately tap it three more times without holding. The light blinks, then red and green three times, and goes off. Paired remotes, any system pairing and the favorite are removed; the limits stay. Pair the shade again afterwards; in a RadioRA 3 or HomeWorks home it is re-added in Lutron Designer, which is installer work.

Full steps

How do I set the limits on a Lutron shade?

On Triathlon, Serena and Palladiom Wire-Free shades, tap the Shade Button, then hold Open and Raise on the paired Pico about 10 seconds, until the button flashes and stays lit. Move the shade with Raise and Lower, then hold Open (top) or Close (bottom) until the button flashes and goes off. In RadioRA 3 and HomeWorks systems, limits are set in Lutron Designer.

Full steps

How do I change the batteries in a Triathlon shade?

Open the battery compartment at the top: rotate the headrail top forward or, with a fascia, pull the fascia out and down. Fit new 1.5 V D-cell alkaline batteries as marked (both holders with Battery Boost) and rotate the compartment up until it locks. Never use lithium, carbon-zinc or rechargeable D cells.

Full steps

How do I set the favorite position?

With the shade paired to a Pico, move it with Raise and Lower, then press and hold Favorite until the Shade Button flashes. From the factory the favorite is halfway between the limits.

Full steps

How do I change the limits on a Sivoia QS shade?

At the drive, tap Open Limit (the green light turns on), hold an arrow button to move the shade, then press and hold Open Limit until the green light flashes. Do the same with Close Limit, then double-tap either limit button to check.

Lutron Triathlon roller shades

Models: Triathlon roller shades: battery-powered (D cells; the Battery Boost option adds a second battery holder) or 12 V wired. Older Lutron documents say Sivoia QS Triathlon.

Triathlon has one button with a light on the motor end, the Shade Button. With it and a Pico remote you pair remotes, set a favorite, adjust the limits (the top and bottom stopping points) and reset. Caseta and RA2 Select homes use the Lutron app; RadioRA 3 and HomeWorks use Lutron Designer.

How to tell you have one: one button with a light, on either side of the roller (four buttons means Sivoia QS or Palladiom). Wired shades flash red and green 3 times at power-up.

You need: a Pico or 4-Group RF remote, or the Lutron app with RA2 Select or a Caseta Pro Smart Hub (L-BDGPRO2-WH; the standard L-BDG2-WH does not support Triathlon). Battery shades take 6 or 8 new 1.5 V D-cell alkaline batteries (12 or 16 with Battery Boost).

Pair a Pico remote (no hub)

  1. Tap the Shade Button. It lights solid green and stays lit.
  2. On the Pico, press and hold Close for about 10 seconds, until the Shade Button flashes: the Pico is paired.
  3. Repeat for more shades, or to pair a second Pico.

If the green light goes out within a second, the shade is already in a Lutron system: pair it in the Lutron app, or in Lutron Designer for RadioRA 3 and HomeWorks. A 4-Group remote pairs the same way, holding a Shade Group button instead of Close.

Set the favorite position

  1. Move the shade with Raise and Lower.
  2. Press and hold Favorite until the Shade Button flashes: the position is saved.

From the factory the favorite is halfway between the limits. To give shades on one Pico different favorites, take one battery out of the shades you are not changing.

Adjust the open and close limits

Limits are set at the factory; adjust them only if needed, with a paired Pico.

  1. Tap the Shade Button. It lights green.
  2. Press and hold Open and Raise together for about 10 seconds, until the Shade Button flashes and stays lit.
  3. Move the shade with Raise and Lower.
  4. Press and hold Open to save the top limit, or Close to save the bottom limit, for about 10 seconds, until the Shade Button flashes and goes off.

In the Lutron app (Caseta, RA2 Select): tap the shade, Edit Device, Set Shade Limits, choose Open Limit or Close Limit, adjust and tap Save.

Reset to factory settings, or remove remotes

A factory default removes all paired remotes, any system pairing and the favorite; the limits stay.

  1. Tap the Shade Button quickly three times, holding after the third tap until the light blinks green rapidly.
  2. Let go and immediately tap it quickly three more times, without holding. The light blinks green rapidly, then red and green three times, and goes off.
  3. Pair your remotes again, or add the shade back to the Lutron app; in a RadioRA 3 or HomeWorks home it is re-added in Lutron Designer (installer work).

Change the batteries and read the battery lights

  1. Open the compartment at the top: rotate the headrail top forward or, with fascia, pull the fascia out and down.
  2. Fit new 1.5 V D-cell alkaline batteries as marked on the holder; with Battery Boost, fill both holders.
  3. Rotate the compartment up until it locks.

Replace all batteries at once, new and from one package. No lithium, carbon-zinc or rechargeable D cells; Lutron recommends Duracell Coppertop alkaline.

  • One red blink every 5 seconds: batteries low; replace them. A light that stays on while the shade moves: batteries very low; replace them now.
  • Moving at half speed: a typical low-battery sign.
  • No movement and no light: spent batteries (hibernation). Fit new batteries and press the Shade Button once (shades made in 2014 or later), or wait 5 minutes between removing the old batteries and fitting the new ones.

Lutron says D batteries power Triathlon shades for three to five years. The battery-life estimates in App Note 561 assume two full up-and-down cycles a day; fewer moves mean longer life.

Add the shade to the Lutron app or a Lutron system

With a Caseta Pro Smart Hub or RA2 Select, add and control the shade in the Lutron app; for voice, see Alexa, Google and Apple Home.

In RadioRA 3 and HomeWorks systems, shades are added and their limits set in Lutron Designer by trained professionals: see RadioRA 3 and HomeWorks.

Careful: moving the shade by hand, or letting it hit something, sets the obstruction code; clear it with a factory default. A factory default also unpairs every remote and removes the shade from any Lutron system, so pair it again afterwards; in a RadioRA 3 or HomeWorks home it has to be re-added in Lutron Designer (installer work). If the code appears only after the shade opens, the open limit is set too high: set it at least 1/4 in (0.6 cm) below where the light starts blinking.

Cellular shades

Lutron Triathlon and Serena honeycomb shades

Models: Triathlon and Serena insulating honeycomb shades, battery or wired.

Honeycomb shades follow the Triathlon steps, except that some take AA batteries, the top limit must leave the cells gently closed, and the lift cords wind on spools.

How to tell you have one: the Shade Button is on the motor unit in the headrail near the center and blinks red and green 3 times at power-up; wired shades have no battery boxes.

You need: the batteries shown in the holders: 8 AA lithium (Type 1 shades) or D-size alkaline (Types 2 to 4).

Pair a remote, set the favorite, reset

Same as Triathlon: pair, favorite, reset. The Shade Button flashes green to confirm, and programming mode ends after 30 seconds without a press.

Adjust the top and bottom limits

  1. Tap the Shade Button. It lights green.
  2. Press and hold Open and Raise until it flashes green and stays lit.
  3. Move the shade with Raise and Lower; at the top, stop where the cells are just closed and stacked gently.
  4. Press and hold Open to save the top limit, or Close for the bottom, until the Shade Button flashes green.

Squeezed cells wear the drive gear and shorten battery life.

Change the batteries

  1. Press all the bracket release tabs above the headrail; the headrail tilts forward.
  2. Fit new batteries exactly as shown in the battery boxes.
  3. Tilt the shade back and press until each bracket clicks. The Shade Button blinks red and green 3 times.

If the shade then ignores commands, press the Shade Button once. Never mix old and new batteries or types; no carbon-zinc, rechargeable or lithium D cells. For AA shades, use only lithium batteries recognized by UL or your local safety agency, and never fit them backwards.

Free a tangled lift cord

To check the 2 to 4 spools, press each spool bracket tab and tilt the shade forward.

  1. Move the shade to its open limit and tap the Shade Button.
  2. Hold Open and Raise until the light flashes and stays on.
  3. Jog down with Lower while pressing the bottom rail down gently but firmly, until the cord is off the spool.
  4. Release the rail and run the shade back up to the open position with Raise. Do not hold Open while the light is on: that would save a new top limit.
  5. Look again. Still tangled, or a cord came loose from its spool: stop and contact us.

Roman shades

Lutron Triathlon Roman shades

Models: Triathlon Roman shades on Lutron's Triathlon/Serena Roman Shade Fabrication Kit (the Triathlon Configured Roman Shade Kit).

The kit has a battery motor, spring modules that balance the shade, and a System Lock, Lutron's "parking brake" for the springs during transport and removal. You can pair a Pico, adjust the top limit, reset and change batteries; the bottom limit is set at the factory, and spring balancing is installer work.

How to tell you have one: a Shade Button with a light on either side, and a battery housing with a latching cover.

You need: fresh 1.5 V D-cell alkaline batteries, a Pico, and the System Lock removed.

Pair a Pico remote

  1. Tap the Shade Button. The light turns green.
  2. Press and hold Close on the Pico until the light flashes green rapidly: paired.

Adjust the top (open) limit

  1. Tap the Shade Button. The light turns green.
  2. Press and hold Open and Raise until the light flashes green rapidly, then stays on.
  3. Set the top with Raise and Lower.
  4. Press and hold Open until the light flashes green rapidly: saved.

The shade ships at its bottom limit, which should not need changing; it can be damaged if taken below it.

Reset and change batteries

Reset is the same as Triathlon (steps); it removes paired controls and keeps both limits. For batteries, press in the latch side of the housing cover, fit new D cells as marked (both holders with Battery Boost), and press the cover back until it latches. Do not mix brands, types or ages.

Spring balance and the System Lock

What it takes: Lutron's spring validation test, run from the Shade Button and Pico with both limits set, shows whether the shade is balanced; spring modules are changed at the bottom limit with the System Lock engaged, and the lock goes back in before the shade is transported, taken down or stored.

Tilt and lift

Lutron wood blinds: Triathlon and Serena tilt, Sivoia QS lift and tilt

Models: Triathlon and Serena wood blinds (the motor tilts the slats) and Sivoia QS wood blinds and venetians (motorized lift and tilt).

Triathlon and Serena blinds store two slat angles, View and Privacy, set from the wood-blind Pico; Sivoia QS blinds set lift and tilt limits at the drive.

How to tell which you have: Triathlon and Serena have one button on the left side and batteries on the front of the headrail. Sivoia QS has Open Limit, Close Limit, Tilt Mode and arrow buttons on the drive.

You need: for Triathlon and Serena, D or AA batteries and the wood-blind Pico (View, Favorite, Privacy, Jog-Open, Jog-Closed).

Pair a Pico and save a favorite (Triathlon, Serena)

  1. Tap the blind button on each blind; it lights green.
  2. Hold Privacy about 10 seconds, until the blind button blinks and turns off.
  3. For a favorite, set the slats with Jog-Open and Jog-Closed.
  4. Hold Favorite until the blind button blinks.

Set the View and Privacy slat angles (Triathlon, Serena)

  1. Tap the blind button. It lights green.
  2. Hold View and Jog-Open together about 10 seconds, until the button blinks and stays lit.
  3. Set the slats with Jog-Open and Jog-Closed.
  4. Hold Privacy to save the closed angle, or View to save the open angle, about 10 seconds, until the button blinks and turns off.

Reset is the same as Triathlon and keeps the View and Privacy angles.

Change the batteries (Triathlon, Serena)

  1. Outside mount: the batteries are at the top of the headrail. Inside mount: take the blind out of its brackets.
  2. Fit new batteries as marked on the holders; the blind button flashes red and green 3 times.
  3. Refit the blind and secure the brackets.

Set the lift limits (Sivoia QS)

  1. Tap Open Limit. The green light turns on.
  2. Hold an arrow button to move the blind to the top position.
  3. Press and hold Open Limit until the green light flashes.
  4. Do the same with Close Limit for the bottom.
  5. Double-tap each limit button to check: the blind travels there.

Set the tilt limits (Sivoia QS)

  1. Tap Tilt Mode. The amber light turns on.
  2. Hold an arrow button until the slats are horizontal.
  3. Tap either limit button. The green light turns on.
  4. Press and hold Tilt Mode until the green light flashes: both tilt limits are stored at a preset angle each side of horizontal.

Custom angles: tap Tilt Mode, then Open Limit or Close Limit, rotate the slats, and hold that limit button until the green light flashes. Keep the top slat off the headrail. Wireless pairing, keypad assignment and defaults on Sivoia QS blinds use drive and keypad sequences.

Installer workWe do this at installation and on service calls.

Lutron Serena

Lutron Serena shades and wood blinds

Models: Serena roller shades, honeycomb shades and wood blinds.

Serena shades have the same single Shade Button and Pico steps as Triathlon. Lutron lists it with the Pico, the 4-Group remote and either Caseta hub; RA2 Select, RadioRA 3 and HomeWorks are listed for Triathlon only.

How to tell you have one: one button on the shade. Roller shades use D batteries; honeycomb shades and wood blinds use D or AA.

You need: batteries (they do not ship with the shades) and a Pico, 4-Group remote or Caseta hub.

Pair a Pico without the app

Same as Triathlon: shades, wood blinds. If the light goes out when you release the Shade Button and the shade is in your Lutron app, add the Pico in the app instead (steps). Otherwise factory default the shade first, as Lutron advises; a default also removes it from any Caseta hub and paired remotes.

Add Serena shades to the Lutron app

  1. Connect the Caseta hub to your router with the Ethernet cable and plug it in.
  2. Install the shades fully first, to avoid accidental damage.
  3. In the Lutron app, tap settings (top left), Add Device, then the shade icon.
  4. Hold the shade button the app shows for 10 seconds, until the app finds the shade; then name it.

Will not add? Factory default the shade and start over; this also unpairs its remotes, and the limits are not affected.

Add a Pico to the app

Tap Settings, Add Device, Pico Remote and pick your Pico. Hold its bottom button at least 10 seconds, until its light blinks; choose the room and shades, tap I am done adding devices, and test it after a few minutes. It keeps working if the internet drops.

Limits, favorite and reset

In the app: tap the shade, Edit Device, Set Shade Limits, adjust and Save. With a Pico, the same as Triathlon: limits, favorite, reset.

Battery signs and blink codes

Low batteries make Serena shades move at half speed, and the Lutron app shows an alert when you open it. Lutron does not recommend rechargeables. Battery changes: roller, honeycomb, wood blinds. Blink codes are the same as Triathlon: see the troubleshooting tables for roller, honeycomb and wood blinds.

Careful: do not pull a powered shade closed by hand; Lutron says this can damage it. If a shade will not close, Serena support is 1.855.573.7362.

Wired QS link

Lutron Sivoia QS wired shades

Models: Sivoia QS roller and tensioned shades on the wired QS link.

The drive, or EDU (electronic drive unit), is wired to a Lutron power supply and, over the QS link (Lutron's wired control network), to keypads. You can store presets and change limits; keypad assignment and system programming are installer work.

How to tell you have one: four small buttons around a light on the drive: a white rectangle (open limit), a black rectangle (close limit), and clockwise and counterclockwise arrows, pressed with a stylus.

You need: a stylus, or a keypad wired to the same shading power panel.

Keypads, Picos and Lutron systems

What it takes: keypads are linked from the keypad (hold Open and Close 5 seconds, pick a shade, tap Lower to assign); Picos connect through a QSM or a QS Wireless receiver; RadioRA 3 and HomeWorks use Lutron Designer.

Installer workWe do this at installation and on service calls.

Save a keypad preset

  1. Hold the keypad's raise or lower button to position the shade.
  2. Press and hold the preset button you want for 5 seconds.

Change the limits at the drive

  1. Tap Open Limit. The green light turns on.
  2. Hold either arrow button to move the shade to the open position.
  3. Press and hold Open Limit until the green light flashes.
  4. Do the same with Close Limit.
  5. Double-tap either limit button to send the shade there and check.

Change the limits from a wired keypad

  1. Press and hold Open and Raise for 5 seconds.
  2. Tap Open or Close to pick the shade.
  3. Hold Raise or Lower to move it.
  4. Hold Open 5 seconds to store the open limit, or Close for the close limit.
  5. Hold Open and Raise 5 seconds to finish.

Reset a Sivoia QS drive

This clears keypad and system assignments; the limits stay. Start with the drive light off. Do each step straight after the last, while the light is still on; if it goes off, start again.

  1. Press and hold Close Limit until the light flashes green, then stays on.
  2. Do the same with Open Limit.
  3. Do the same with the CW arrow.
  4. Do the same with the CCW arrow. The light runs a multicolor sequence and turns off: done.

Keypads and system links then need setting up again.

Installer workWe do this at installation and on service calls.

Wired power, radio control

Lutron Sivoia QS Wireless shades

Models: Sivoia QS shades with a QS Wireless receiver (QSYC-J-RCVR), and Palladiom Wireless shades, which Lutron programs the same way.

The Sivoia QS four-button drive, wired for power only and controlled by radio through a receiver. Stand-alone shades pair with a Pico or 4-Group remote; systems use the Lutron app or Lutron Designer.

How to tell you have one: a wireless receiver, usually near a QS shade; Palladiom often uses a remote-mounted Wireless Receiver Adapter. Without a receiver there is no wireless control.

You need: a stylus and a Pico or 4-Group remote.

Pair a remote, starting at the shade (Sivoia QS)

  1. Double-tap Open Limit. The shade opens fully and the light goes off.
  2. With the light off, press and hold Open Limit until the light flashes green, then stays on.
  3. Tap the arrow button next to the light. Drive and receiver lights flash green every 4 seconds.
  4. Press and hold Close on the Pico (a Shade Group button on a 4-Group remote) until the shade moves a short way and back, a "wiggle": paired.

For several shades on one remote, do steps 1 to 3 on each first. If the light goes out within a second after step 3, the shade is in a Lutron system.

Pair from the remote (Sivoia QS, Palladiom Wireless)

  1. Press and hold Open and Close on the Pico for 3 seconds; its light flashes slowly. On a 4-Group remote, pick the group first.
  2. Press any button on each drive to add; its light flutters quickly.
  3. Hold Open and Close 3 seconds again; the lights flutter and stop.

Change the limits and reset

Limits: at the drive, as for Sivoia QS. Remotes cannot set limits on four-button drives, but an assigned wireless keypad can, with the wired-keypad steps. Reset: the Sivoia QS sequence; at the end the drive light stays blue and the receiver red for a few seconds, then both restart. Limits stay.

Exposed roller

Lutron Palladiom shades: Wire-Free and wired

Models: Palladiom Wire-Free roller shades (LBMRJ-C, LBMRK-C) and Palladiom wired shades.

Wire-Free runs on D batteries and has one Shade Button, programmed with a Pico. Wired Palladiom has a four-button drive like Sivoia QS, behind a finish ring.

How to tell which you have: Wire-Free has one Shade Button at the left or right end of the headrail and a battery door at the drive end. Wired has four buttons (square, round, arrow up, arrow down), reached by rotating the finish ring.

You need: for Wire-Free, 3, 4 or 6 new 1.5 V alkaline D cells and a Pico; with Caseta, the Pro hub.

Pair a Pico (Wire-Free)

  1. Tap the Shade Button. It lights steady green; if it goes out within a second, the shade is in a Lutron system.
  2. Press and hold Close on the Pico for 10 seconds. The Shade Button and the Pico light flash rapidly, then turn off: paired.

Set the limits (Wire-Free)

  1. Tap the Shade Button. It lights steady green.
  2. Hold Open and Raise 10 seconds, until the light flashes and turns steady green.
  3. Move the shade with Raise and Lower.
  4. Hold Open (open limit) or Close (close limit) 10 seconds; both lights flash rapidly and turn off.
  5. If you pulled the shade from its bracket, slide it fully back.

Reset: same as Triathlon; the limits stay.

Change the batteries (Wire-Free)

  1. Pull the fabric roll out at the drive end, away from the bracket.
  2. Push the battery door in, then up; do not pull it away from the shade.
  3. Pull the battery sleeve out and load new alkaline D cells as shown on it.
  4. Slide the sleeve back in as far as it goes.
  5. Swing the door up, push it in and down. The Shade Button light flashes to confirm power.

Use new batteries of one brand and type, never rechargeables.

The sealed internal battery (Wire-Free)

What it takes: Wire-Free drives also hold a sealed internal battery. Lutron says it rarely causes performance problems and asks owners to contact Lutron technical support before replacing it, which means opening the drive housing.

Motorized drapery

Lutron Sivoia QS drapery

Models: Sivoia QS drapery systems with drive ALAC-EDU-D105-PT, pinch pleat or ripplefold.

The drapery runs on a Sivoia QS drive, controlled by Lutron wireless controls through a wireless receiver or by wired keypads. You set its limits and pair a wireless control at the drive; keypad and system programming are installer work.

How to tell you have one: at power-up the drive light flashes red, green and blue; the drive has Open Limit, Close Limit and arrow buttons.

You need: access to the drive, and for wireless control a wireless receiver and a Lutron wireless control.

Pair a wireless control

  1. Press and hold Open Limit until the green light flashes, then stays on.
  2. Tap an arrow button. The drive and receiver lights flash twice every 4 seconds.
  3. Press and hold Close on the control until the drapery wiggles: paired.

Set the open and close limits

  1. Tap Close Limit (or Open Limit). The green light turns on.
  2. Hold an arrow button until the drapery is where you want it.
  3. Press and hold the same limit button until the green light flashes, then turns off.

On pull-to-start draperies, the first move after each power-up runs the carriers to the end of the track to recalibrate; the limits do not change.

Reset the drapery drive

Lutron's drapery guide shows the reset only as button pictures, so this page gives no button order. A reset un-assigns the drive from all wireless controls and keeps the limits.

Installer workWe do this at installation and on service calls.

Open by hand (Manual Open option)

On systems ordered with this option (not pull-to-start), you can pull the drape open near the top in a power cut.

  1. To restore motor control, pull the drape closed until the hanger bar engages the latch plate.
  2. Or double-tap Open Limit: the latch plate moves to the open limit and engages the hanger bar.

Remotes, keypads, apps

Lutron controls: Pico, 4-Group remote, app and systems

Models: Pico remotes, the 4-Group RF remote (CS-YJ-4GC-WH, CS-YK-4GC-WH), the Lutron app with a Caseta Smart Hub (L-BDG2-WH) or Pro hub (L-BDGPRO2-WH), RA2 Select, RadioRA 3 and HomeWorks.

Picos and the 4-Group remote talk to shades directly; a Caseta hub adds the app, control from anywhere and voice assistants; RadioRA 3 and HomeWorks are programmed by professionals.

Pico remote

  1. To reset a Pico, triple-tap the top or bottom button and hold, until the light by the top button turns on solid (about 3 seconds).
  2. Let go and immediately triple-tap it again. When the quick flashing stops, the reset is done.

4-Group RF remote

Two AAA alkaline batteries, rated 7 years, fit under the back cover. Range is 30 ft (9 m).

  1. To reset it, tap All Shades.
  2. Triple-tap Open or Close and hold, until the All Shades light turns off.
  3. Let go and immediately triple-tap again, without holding. All lights off: factory settings, shade assignments erased.

Lutron app, Caseta hub and RA2 Select

  • Each Caseta hub handles up to 75 devices; Triathlon and Palladiom Wire-Free need the Pro hub.
  • Adding shades and Picos: steps. RA2 Select shades are also set up in the Lutron app.
  • Hub light: a solid, dim ring is normal; a ring flashing on and off means no Wi-Fi connection. Unplug and replug the hub; if needed, hold its button 20 seconds to reset network settings.

RadioRA 3 and HomeWorks

What it takes: Lutron Designer, PC software for setup, device activation, programming, integrations and shade limits; for RadioRA 3 it is available only after Lutron's qualification training. Owners use the Lutron app for scenes, schedules and shade adjustments.

Alexa, Google and Apple Home

  • Apple Home: needs a hub with a 2 in the model number and the Lutron app 2.2 or later; enter the setup code from the bottom of the hub in the app's Apple HomeKit settings. Wood blinds tilt only.
  • Alexa: link your Caseta system in the Amazon Alexa app.
  • Google: link your Caseta system in the Google Home app.

Service

When to call us instead

Some steps in these guides are installer work: wired networks, control-system programming and anything that means opening a motor or its wiring. We program every motor we install and document the setup, and we service and reprogram motorized systems, including ones we did not install.

Good to Know

Frequently asked

What does a red blinking light on my Lutron shade mean?

On Serena, Triathlon and Palladiom Wire-Free shades, one red blink every 5 seconds means the batteries are low: replace them. Fast red blinking for 15 seconds means an obstruction: clear it, then factory default the shade, which also unpairs its remotes and removes it from any Lutron system, so pair it again (in a RadioRA 3 or HomeWorks home it is re-added in Lutron Designer, which is installer work). If it happens only after the shade opens, the open limit is too high: set it at least 1/4 in (0.6 cm) lower instead. Two quick red blinks with a pause mean the limits need setting again. Five red blinks every 4 seconds on Serena and Triathlon shades mean high condensing humidity: ventilate and let the shade dry.

How long do the batteries last in a Lutron Triathlon shade?

Lutron says D batteries power Triathlon shades for three to five years. The estimates in Lutron's App Note 561 assume two full up-and-down cycles a day, and fewer moves mean longer life. Use new alkaline D cells from one package and replace them all at once; never lithium, carbon-zinc or rechargeable D cells.

Why is my Lutron shade moving at half speed?

Moving at half speed is a typical sign of low batteries; Serena shades on a Caseta hub also show an alert when you open the Lutron app. Replace all the batteries. If a shade shows no light and does not move, the batteries are spent and it has gone into hibernation: fit new batteries and press the Shade Button once (shades made in 2014 or later), or wait 5 minutes between removing the old batteries and fitting the new ones.

Why won't my Lutron shade pair with my Pico?

Tap the Shade Button first. If its green light goes out within a second, the shade is already in a Lutron system: add the Pico through the Lutron app, or Lutron Designer for RadioRA 3 and HomeWorks, or factory default the shade to use the Pico on its own (this removes it from the app or system). Otherwise stay within 30 ft (9 m), replace the Pico battery and pair again. After a shade's radio channel has been changed, the Pico's channel must be changed to match.

Can I program a Lutron RadioRA 3 or HomeWorks system myself?

Not the initial setup. Lutron says RadioRA 3 is designed to be sold and programmed by trained professionals, in Lutron Designer software that is available only after Lutron's qualification training, and shade limits in these systems are set in Designer. Owners use the Lutron app for schedules, scenes and shade adjustments.

Do Lutron shades work with Alexa, Google Home and Apple Home?

Serena shades do, through a Caseta Smart Hub, and so do Triathlon and Palladiom Wire-Free shades on the Pro hub (L-BDGPRO2-WH). Apple Home needs a hub with a 2 in its model number and the Lutron app 2.2 or later; wood blinds can only be tilted from Apple Home. For Alexa or Google, link your Caseta system in the Alexa or Google Home app.

Can I pull my Lutron shade closed by hand?

Lutron says you can damage a powered shade by closing it by hand. On Serena, Triathlon and Palladiom Wire-Free roller shades a hand move also triggers the obstruction code (fast red blinking), which a factory default clears; the default also unpairs the shade's remotes and removes it from any Lutron system, so pair it again afterwards (in a RadioRA 3 or HomeWorks home it is re-added in Lutron Designer, which is installer work).

Do I need to replace the sealed battery in a Palladiom Wire-Free shade?

Usually not. Lutron says performance problems are rarely caused by the sealed internal battery and asks owners to contact Lutron technical support before replacing it, which means taking the drive apart. The batteries you change yourself are the alkaline D cells behind the battery door at the drive end.
