A wood blind that joins the Lutron system

A wood blind does something no shade can: it steers daylight. Tilt the slats up and the sun bounces off the ceiling; tilt them down and you keep the view of the garden without the glare. Lutron puts that tilt on a motor in the headrail, so the blind answers the same Pico remotes and keypads, app and schedules as your Lutron shades and lights.

Lutron makes four of them. Caséta and Serena are sold online; Triathlon and Sivoia are the dealer lines we specify, install and program. All four use North American basswood slats. They differ in what the motor moves, how they are powered, how big they get and which systems they join.

What are Lutron wood blinds? Motorized basswood blinds made by Lutron, in four lines. Triathlon, Serena and Caséta tilt by motor and lift by hand from the bottom rail, with no lift cord; Sivoia motorizes both the lift and the tilt. A single Triathlon blind runs 20 to 72 in wide and up to 80 in tall, or 96 in as two blinds under one valance; Sivoia runs 24 to 108 in wide and up to 120 in tall.

Caséta: a window or two, do it yourself

Lutron's simplest wood blind: two finishes, batteries, a bottom rail for the lift, set up in the Lutron app and paired with Caséta lighting. If your windows fit its sizes and you are happy to install and pair blinds yourself, it does the job.

Serena: online, with more choice

Eight finishes, Easton or Morgan valances, batteries, wiring or a manual version, installed by you or a pro. Lutron covers Serena and Triathlon wood blinds with one chassis specification, so the blind itself is built the same way; Serena's online store sells heights up to 72 in. See Serena by Lutron.

Triathlon: the dealer line for finished homes

Batteries, 12 V wiring or a manual version that matches the motorized ones; joins RA2 Select, RadioRA 3 and HomeWorks; Natural Light Optimization with RadioRA 3, HomeWorks or Athena. See Lutron Triathlon.

Sivoia: motorized lift, tall windows

The only Lutron wood blind that raises and lowers itself, independent of the tilt, on 35 V wiring, up to 108 by 120 in. The choice for new construction, renovations and windows nobody can reach. See Lutron Sivoia QS.

How It Works

Tilt by motor, lift by hand, or both by motor

Parts of a Lutron Triathlon wood blindFront view of an inside-mounted wood blind: a wood valance at the top hiding the headrail with the drive unit, two-inch basswood slats hung on two ladders, a bottom rail used to lift the blind by hand, and a small light gap between the slat ends and the window frame.123456
  1. 1Valance in matching basswood, Easton or Morgan on Triathlon and Serena, painted or stained like the slats.
  2. 2Headrail behind the valance, with the drive unit that tilts the slats and, on battery blinds, the batteries.
  3. 3Two-inch North American basswood slats.
  4. 4Ladders: they carry the slats and turn them together when the motor tilts.
  5. 5Bottom rail: lift it to raise the blind; it stays where you leave it. No lift cord hangs at the window.
  6. 6Light gap: about 1/4 in from the slat ends to the frame on an inside mount.

Triathlon, Serena and Caséta: the motor tilts, you lift

The drive unit in the headrail turns the slats, stops at presets and holds any angle at any height. To raise the blind you lift the bottom rail, which Lutron shaped for an easy, precise lift even on a blind 6 ft wide; it stays where you leave it. On the battery and wired versions no lift cord and no tilt wand hang at the window.

Sivoia: the motor lifts and tilts

Sivoia moves the height and the slat angle independently: raise the blind clear of the glass, stop it halfway with the slats closed, or recall a preset that sets both. The tilt range can be set from full tilt in either direction down to a fixed angle.

Slats in step

Intelligent Tilt Alignment keeps the slats at the same angle from blind to blind, so a wall of windows reads as one surface rather than a row of blinds at slightly different angles. On Sivoia, Lutron holds the tilt within 1/16 in and the bottom rail within 1/8 in.

Manual Triathlon, to match

Lutron makes a Triathlon wood blind with manual tilt and cordless manual lift, no batteries and no wiring, built to coordinate with the motorized ones. Useful in a guest room or a closet that shares a finish with the main rooms.

Natural Light Optimization

Blinds that follow the sun

Natural Light Optimization tilts Lutron wood blinds on their own through the day. You set it up once: Façade Finder in the Lutron app records which way each window faces, and the blinds then run a schedule worked out for each day. It automates the tilt only; lifting stays with you.

Morning glareLow sun on the east side: those blinds tilt against it.
Max ViewThe other sides open level, so the view stays clear.
Fade FighterAs the sun moves, slats diffuse direct sun before it reaches floors, furniture and art.
After duskEvery blind tilts closed for privacy.

Which blinds run it

Caséta and Serena wood blinds run it in the Lutron app. Triathlon wood blinds run it when paired with a RadioRA 3, HomeWorks or Athena system. Lutron does not list it for Sivoia, which runs on scenes and schedules set in the system.

Why it pays in South Florida

Our sun is strong all year, and the hardest light lands on west glass in the afternoon. Letting the blinds take the low morning sun on the east, diffuse direct sun as it moves round, and close at dusk protects wood floors, rugs and art without anyone touching a remote. Triathlon and Serena battery blinds, from Lutron's specification 085665; the widths are for an outside-mount blind. Standard sizes, not included; Lutron recommends specific brands for the best battery life.

Wired Triathlon

12 V from a Lutron plug-in supply or a 10-output power panel; each wired blind ships with a 15 ft power wire. The same blind as the battery version, minus the battery changes: the answer for high windows, stairwells and anything behind furniture.

Sivoia on 35 V

Class 2 low-voltage wiring from Lutron's plug-in, junction-box or panel supplies, planned with the electrician before drywall, which is why Sivoia suits new construction and full renovations best - see prewiring for motorized shades.

Finishes & Valances

Eighteen paints and stains, and a valance to match

Lutron's Basswoods card lists eighteen finishes for its wood blinds, from painted whites and greys through natural woods to near-blacks, all PVC-free. Valances are made of the same basswood and painted or stained to match the slats. Serena sells eight of the finishes online and Caséta two; Sivoia also offers custom color matching.

Swatch photographs: Lutron. Codes, Lutron sample numbers and specifications for every finish are on our Lutron wood blind colors page; tell us the finishes you like and we bring Lutron's memo samples to the consultation, or request samples.

Easton and Morgan

The two valance styles for Triathlon and Serena wood blinds. Returns are 3 in deep as standard; Lutron makes custom returns for partly recessed blinds and for outside mounts over trim, so the valance closes cleanly against the wall.

Sutton, Royal and Harvard

Sivoia's three valance styles, with returns from 1 to 10 in on an outside mount. Or no valance at all: the exposed aluminum headrail gives a clean, modern line.

A heavier crown

For a cornice across several windows, or a profile Lutron does not make, see the wood valances milled in basswood by our family's mill: seven profiles, stained, lacquered or wrapped in fabric.

Seeing the finish

Basswood is a natural material: grain, texture and tone vary from slat to slat and from the swatch. We bring Lutron's samples so you judge the finish in your own light, next to your floors and millwork.

Measuring & Mounting

What we check before ordering

Frame depth

Triathlon and Serena need a frame at least 2 in deep for an inside mount and 3 5/8 in to recess the blind and valance fully; between 2 and 2 1/2 in the blind sits partly recessed, with custom valance returns. Sivoia recesses fully in 2.75 in, and in a shade pocket its brackets need 1 3/8 in clear in front, so the pocket must be at least 4 in deep. Under 2 in, it is an outside mount.

Light gaps

Inside mounted, Triathlon and Serena leave about 1/4 in between the slat ends and the frame on each side; Sivoia, 1/16 in from end caps to slat ends. Light also passes between closed slats, so a blind is never a blackout.

Valance returns

Standard returns on Triathlon and Serena are 3 in. Over trim or spacers we order custom returns from 3 1/8 to 4 in; on a partial recess, from 1/2 to 1 in, following Lutron's Application Note #752.

Width and splitting

Past 72 in, Triathlon goes to two blinds under one valance, up to 96 in, tilting in step. Wider walls take several blinds side by side, or Sivoia to 108 in.

French doors

Lutron makes hold-down brackets for door-mounted wood blinds. On each door we check the handle and the frame before choosing the mount.

Power and access

Batteries need nothing in the wall and sit in the headrail behind the valance. A 12 V Triathlon or a 35 V Sivoia needs a wire to the headrail; on finished walls we plan the route at the measure. The full method: how to measure.

South Florida

Where Lutron wood blinds work here, and where they don't

The right rooms

Studies and home offices, where slats tilted up send screen glare to the ceiling; dens, libraries and dining rooms; bedrooms layered with drapery; and the street side of older homes in Victoria Park, Coral Gables or Boca Raton, where a classic blind suits the architecture.

Not in wet rooms

Lutron rates its wood blinds for indoor use below 90% relative humidity, non-condensing, and up to 104 °F. Showers, laundries and unconditioned lanais are out; there we use faux wood blinds or a shade.

Not where you need darkness

Closed slats still pass light between them. For a bedroom or a media room, pair the blind with a blackout drapery or choose a blackout shade or honeycomb shade - see media room window treatments.

Not on sliding doors

A blind across a slider has to come up every time you walk out. Vertical blinds, Allusion sheer verticals or a shade work better there - see sliding glass doors.

Full sun on the water

On oceanfront glass in sun all day, a solar shade cuts heat and glare and keeps the view; we keep wood blinds for the rooms behind it.

Condos

Battery Triathlon blinds need no electrician and no conduit, which keeps an install in a finished condo simple. In a building under construction, ask about wiring before the walls close.

Honest Comparison

Lutron wood blinds, or our own mill's?

We also make basswood blinds: our family's mill in Quebec, Persienne Design, has built shutters and wood blinds for more than 25 years. Both are real basswood. The choice comes down to the motor and the system the blind has to join.

Choose Lutron when

  • the blinds should answer the same Pico remotes, keypads, app and scenes as your Lutron shades and lights;
  • you want Natural Light Optimization to run the tilt on its own;
  • a wall of windows has to tilt in step;
  • a tall window needs motorized lift (Sivoia).

Choose our mill's blinds when

For humid rooms we use faux wood. See horizontal and wood blinds.

Good to Know

Lutron wood blinds, frequently asked

Do Lutron wood blinds raise and lower by motor?

Only Sivoia. Sivoia wood blinds motorize the lift and the tilt independently, on 35 V wiring. Triathlon, Serena and Caséta wood blinds motorize the tilt; you raise and lower them by hand from the bottom rail, with no lift cord at the window. Natural Light Optimization automates the tilt only.

How big can a Lutron wood blind be?

A single Triathlon blind runs 20 to 72 in wide and up to 80 in tall, and two blinds under one valance cover up to 96 in. Sivoia runs 24 to 108 in wide and 24 to 120 in tall. Serena's site sells single blinds 20 to 72 in wide and up to 72 in tall, and Caséta's launch price covers sizes up to 48 x 80 in.

What batteries do Lutron wood blinds use?

It depends on the width: 12 AA lithium batteries for blinds 20 to 28 in wide, 4 D alkaline from 28 1/8 to 42 1/8 in, 8 D alkaline from 42 1/4 to 72 in, and 12 D alkaline with the Battery Boost option on blinds 54 in and wider, which adds four batteries for large, busy blinds. Batteries are standard sizes, not included, and Lutron recommends specific brands for the best battery life.

How long do the batteries last?

Lutron publishes no battery-life figure for its wood blinds; it calls the battery life industry-leading. A tilt is a short move, a couple of seconds. In TechHive's review, Serena wood blinds on four D cells were still running after a year of two moves a day. For a window nobody can reach, choose 12 V wiring or Sivoia.

What is Natural Light Optimization?

A Lutron feature that tilts wood blinds automatically through the day. After a one-time setup in the Lutron app, where Façade Finder records which way each window faces, the blinds tilt against the low morning sun on the east side, open to Max View on the other sides, move to Fade Fighter to diffuse direct sun on floors and furniture, and close after dusk. Caséta and Serena run it in the Lutron app; Triathlon runs it with RadioRA 3, HomeWorks or Athena.

Can Lutron wood blinds be hardwired?

Yes. Triathlon wood blinds come in a 12 V wired version, powered from a plug-in supply or a 10-output power panel, and Sivoia wood blinds run on 35 V. The wire is easiest to place before drywall; in a finished room, batteries avoid opening walls. See prewiring for motorized shades.

Do Lutron wood blinds work with HomeWorks, RadioRA 3 and voice assistants?

Triathlon wood blinds work with Pico remotes, Caséta PRO, RA2 Select, RadioRA 3, HomeWorks and Athena; Sivoia joins HomeWorks, RadioRA 3 and RA2 Select over Lutron's QS wired and wireless links. Lutron's systems connect them to Alexa, Google Home and Apple Home, and Caséta and Serena blinds pair with the Lutron app directly.

Are Lutron wood blinds child-safe?

The battery and wired Triathlon and Serena blinds have no lift cord and no tilt wand at the window, which Lutron describes as child and pet friendly, and Lutron states the line complies with WCMA safety guidelines; Sivoia complies with the WCMA standard for corded window treatments. More in child-safe window treatments.

Can Lutron wood blinds go in a bathroom?

Not one with a shower. Lutron rates its wood blinds for indoor use below 90% relative humidity, non-condensing, and up to 104 °F. For baths, laundries and covered patios we use faux wood blinds or a shade instead.

Can Lutron wood blinds go on French doors?

Yes. Lutron makes hold-down brackets for door-mounted wood blinds, which keep the bottom of the blind against the door as it swings. At the measure we check the handle and the frame on each door before choosing the mount.

How deep must the window be for an inside mount?

At least 2 in for Triathlon and Serena, and 3 5/8 in to recess the blind and its valance fully; between 2 and 2 1/2 in, Lutron makes custom valance returns of 1/2 to 1 in to close the sides. Sivoia recesses fully in 2.75 in, and in a pocket its brackets need 1 3/8 in clear in front, so the pocket must be at least 4 in deep. Under 2 in, the blind is mounted outside the frame.

Do the slats line up from blind to blind?

Yes. Intelligent Tilt Alignment keeps the slats at the same angle across several blinds. On Sivoia, Lutron holds the tilt within 1/16 in and the bottom rail within 1/8 in between adjacent blinds.

How quiet are Lutron wood blinds?

Lutron specifies that the motor will not exceed 44 dBA measured 3 ft from the drive unit, on Triathlon, Serena and Sivoia alike.

What finishes do Lutron wood blinds come in?

Lutron's Basswoods card lists 18 paints and stains, from Arctic White and Soft White to Walnut, Dark Wenge and Black Onyx, all PVC-free. Serena sells eight finishes online and Caséta two, painted white and stained walnut; Sivoia also offers custom color matching. Valances are painted or stained to match the slats. Every finish: Lutron wood blind colors.

Serena or Triathlon wood blinds?

Lutron publishes one chassis specification for both, so the blind, the batteries, the valances and the tilt are the same; Serena's online store sells heights up to 72 in, Triathlon goes to 80 in. Serena is sold online with a do-it-yourself option and joins Caséta; Triathlon is sold and installed through dealers and adds RA2 Select, RadioRA 3, HomeWorks and Athena.

How much do Lutron wood blinds cost?

Lutron publishes retail prices for its two online lines: Caséta wood blinds launched in January 2026 at $429 for sizes up to 48 x 80 in, with larger sizes extra, and Serena wood blinds start at $699 for a 3 x 5 ft window on Lutron's Serena site. Triathlon and Sivoia are sold through dealers and priced per window by size, power and valance; we quote them in writing after a free in-home measure.

Do you install Lutron wood blinds across South Florida?

Yes. Our own certified team measures, installs and programs Lutron wood blinds from Miami and Miami Beach through Fort Lauderdale to Boca Raton and West Palm Beach, and services Lutron systems installed by others - see Lutron service.
