The Short Answer

The Pico remote, the 4-Group remote, the engraved keypads, and what a scene is

Apps are fine; buttons are better. The Lutron Pico is a slim wireless remote on a coin cell that pairs to a shade in ten seconds from the Shade Button, works from 30 ft, and mounts to a wall plate or a tabletop pedestal without cutting a hole or running a wire; the three-button shade Pico lists at about $32. Above it sit the engraved keypads, Sunnata on RadioRA 3, seeTouch and GRAFIK T on the older systems, Palladiom in matching metals for HomeWorks, where one press runs a scene: the shades, the drapery and the lights of a room, or a floor, together. Between the two is the hub or processor that makes the app, the schedules and the voice assistants possible.

We pair every Pico, engrave every keypad for the rooms it controls and program every scene before we leave, on a Lutron system we supply or on one the house already has.

  • Price, at Lutron list: Pico PJ2-3BRL about $32.40; Caséta Smart Bridge Pro about $180; RadioRA 3 processor kit about $549. Our published Lutron shade figures carry a Pico per opening and the hub or processor once per house; the Lutron Price Builder shows each as its own line.
  • Where we installed them: an engraved keypad on the wall of every room in six Turks and Caicos villas, a Palladiom keypad in every room of the Fort Lauderdale estate, Picos on fourteen Triathlon shades in Boca Raton, a Lutron keypad in every room and not one remote at Landmark Ranch Estates.
  • Who we are: Exotic Shades & Draperies holds a direct Lutron shading account with Lutron Residential Systems (September 2026) and Lutron's LCI Full Shades Qualification Training certificate (April 2026); the same in-house team measures, installs and programs every Lutron project and services Lutron systems installed by others.

The Remote

The Pico: how it pairs, what it does, where it lives #

Lutron's remote is the reason a battery shade works on day one, with nothing else in the house.

Pairing takes ten seconds: tap the Shade Button on the shade so it lights solid green, then hold Close on the Pico until the Shade Button flashes. If the light goes out within a second the shade is already in a Lutron system, and the Pico is added in the Lutron app or, on RadioRA 3 and HomeWorks, in Lutron Designer. One Pico can run several shades, several Picos can run one shade, and a favorite position is saved by holding the center button; the top and bottom limits of a Triathlon, Serena or Palladiom Wire-Free shade are adjusted from the Pico too. Range is about 30 ft, the coin cell lasts about ten years on Lutron's rating, and a reset is a triple-tap and hold.

Where it lives is the design question. A wall plate by the bed, a pedestal on the nightstand, loose on the sofa table: the Pico mounts anywhere without cutting a hole or running a wire, so the bedroom gets its blackout button where the hand lands in the dark, and the living room gets one by the door. Fourteen Triathlon shades in the Boca Raton home run this way, each room with its own Pico, the house on the Lutron app and Siri through a Caséta Smart Bridge Pro. The full steps, the blink codes and the channel-change note are on the Lutron programming guide.

Scenes

What a scene is, and where it is made #

A scene is one button that sets many things at once. Which things, and who writes it, depends on the system.

Caséta

The owner, in the app

With the Smart Bridge Pro, scenes and schedules are built in the Lutron app: Morning raises the sheers and brings up the kitchen lights, Away drops every shade at noon in July. Sunrise and sunset events follow the calendar. Alexa, Google Home and Apple Home run the same scenes by voice.

RadioRA 3

The dealer, in Lutron Designer

Scenes, shade groups, keypad engravings and the timeclock are built in Lutron Designer, which Lutron releases to trained professionals; the owner then edits scenes and schedules in the Lutron app. Sunnata keypads on the wall carry the scenes; up to 200 Lutron devices per processor.

HomeWorks QS and QSX

The dealer, at estate scale

Up to sixteen processors and gateways, 32 links and 10,000 zones per system, with Palladiom, seeTouch and GRAFIK T keypads and the Palladiom thermostat. Good night closes the bedrooms and Morning opens the sheers at the Ritz-Carlton Residences Miami Beach; one press moves fourteen walls of glass on Hillsboro Mile.

myRoom

Hospitality, one plate per room

Lutron's guestroom system: scene, fan and shade buttons on one engraved plate at the door and the bed. Six villas on Big Ambergris Cay run every blackout and Roman this way on myRoom XR, hard-wired, with nothing to pair and no battery to change.

Two details decide whether a scene feels right. Shade groups: in RadioRA 3 and HomeWorks the shades of one wall are grouped so they start and stop together, with Intelligent Hembar Alignment holding the bottom bars within 1/8 in; in a Crestron house that pairs with Lutron, those groups stay in Lutron Designer. And the keypad engraving: a button that says Entertain gets pressed, a button that says Zone 3 does not. We write the scene list with the client at the walkthrough and engrave from it.

What Connects It

The hub or processor in the middle #

A Pico talks to the shade directly. Everything else, the app, the schedules, the voice assistants, the keypads on the wall, goes through a Lutron hub or processor.

$180

Caséta Smart Bridge Pro at Lutron list: the hub Triathlon and Palladiom Wire-Free need (Serena runs on either Caséta hub). Up to 75 devices. Adds the app, schedules and Alexa, Google Home and Apple Home.

$549

RadioRA 3 processor kit at Lutron list: up to 200 Lutron devices, Sunnata keypads, Lutron Designer programming, and Lutron's integration list for Crestron, Control4, Savant, URC, RTI, Elan, Kaleidescape, AMX, Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home, josh.ai, Sonos, Honeywell and Ecobee.

16

Processors and gateways in one HomeWorks QSX system, with 32 configurable links and 10,000 zones, Ketra through the Clear Connect Gateway Type X, and the Palladiom thermostat.

434 MHz

Clear Connect Type A, the radio the Pico, the keypads and the battery shades share, in a band Lutron calls essentially silent; Type X at 2.4 GHz carries Ketra and dense lighting.

Which one a house needs follows from the shades and the lighting: a Pico alone for one battery shade, the Smart Bridge Pro for a few rooms on the app, RadioRA 3 for a renovation with keypads and an integrator, HomeWorks for an estate. Wired Sivoia QS shades can also run stand-alone from wired QS keypads on the link, with a QSM or a QS Wireless receiver bringing a Pico to them. When the house runs Crestron, Control4 or Savant, the Lutron processor pairs into it and the Lutron keypads, Picos and scenes carry over; at Landmark Ranch Estates the Lutron keypads in every room run Somfy motors through the integrator's interfaces, and at the Ritz-Carlton Residences Sunny Isles the HomeWorks keypads sit inside a Crestron house. The ladder from Caséta to HomeWorks is on lighting control; Lutron against Crestron on Lutron vs Crestron.

Good to Know

Pico and keypads, asked and answered

Do Pico remotes need wiring? #

No. A Pico is a wireless remote on a coin cell that Lutron rates at about ten years, paired to the shade itself in ten seconds from the Shade Button, working from about 30 ft, and mounted to a wall plate or a tabletop pedestal without cutting a hole or running a wire. It needs no hub and keeps working if the internet drops. Steps: the Lutron programming guide.

Can one button control shades and lights together? #

Yes, that is what a scene is: one button on a keypad, in the app or by voice that sets many shades and lights at once. In Caséta the owner builds scenes in the Lutron app; on RadioRA 3 and HomeWorks the dealer builds them in Lutron Designer and the owner edits them in the app. Good night closes the bedrooms and Morning opens the sheers at the Ritz-Carlton Residences Miami Beach; every treatment in the Fort Lauderdale estate, inside and out, answers a Palladiom keypad.

Which Lutron hub do I need? #

For Serena, either Caséta hub. For Triathlon and Palladiom Wire-Free, the Caséta Smart Bridge Pro (about $180 at Lutron list; the standard hub does not support them), with up to 75 devices per hub. For a renovation with keypads on the wall and an integrator, RadioRA 3 (processor kit about $549 at list, up to 200 devices). For an estate, HomeWorks QSX, up to sixteen processors and gateways. Wired Sivoia QS shades can also run from wired QS keypads with no processor at all. The ladder, step by step: lighting control.

Can I add controls later? #

Yes. A Pico pairs to a shade in ten seconds; a Smart Bridge Pro is added to the network and the shades and Picos are brought into the app; keypads join a RadioRA 3 or HomeWorks system in Lutron Designer. The one thing that does not change later is the shade's line: a Triathlon shade joins a processor, a Serena shade is listed for Caséta and Pico, so if keypads are coming, order Triathlon. Read Lutron Triathlon.

What about the wall clutter? #

A keypad consolidates: one engraved plate replaces a bank of switches and carries the shades, the drapery and the lights as scenes, with the buttons named for what they do. Palladiom keypads come in metal and glass finishes matched to the Palladiom shades and thermostat; Sunnata keypads carry RadioRA 3 homes; seeTouch and GRAFIK T the older systems. At Landmark Ranch Estates there is a Lutron keypad in every room and not one remote in the house.

Do the Lutron controls work with Alexa, Google Home and Apple Home? #

Yes, through the hub or processor. A Caséta Smart Bridge Pro links to Amazon Alexa and Google Home in their apps and joins Apple Home (a hub with a 2 in its model number and the current Lutron app); RadioRA 3 and HomeWorks add josh.ai to the list. A Pico works alongside the voice assistants and does not depend on them.

Can a Pico run a wired Sivoia QS shade? #

Yes, through a QSM or a QS Wireless receiver on the link, which is how a stand-alone wired shade gets a remote (Lutron's Application Note 463 covers it). In a RadioRA 3 or HomeWorks home the Pico is added in Lutron Designer. Wired Sivoia QS shades also take wired QS keypads on the link, assigned from the keypad, with presets saved by holding a button. Read Lutron Sivoia QS.

Do the Lutron keypads work in a Crestron or Control4 house? #

Yes. Crestron Home pairs natively with HomeWorks QS and QSX, RadioRA 2 and 3 and RA2 Select, imports the Lutron lights, shades and keypads, and the Lutron shade groups stay in Lutron Designer; Lutron's RadioRA 3 list covers Control4 and Savant as well. At the Ritz-Carlton Residences Sunny Isles the HomeWorks keypads sit inside a Crestron house; at Landmark Ranch Estates the Lutron keypads run Somfy motors through the integrator's interfaces. Lutron vs Crestron · Control4 shades.

What do a Pico, a hub and a keypad cost? #

At Lutron's list price, which is what we sell at: the three-button shade Pico about $32.40 (about $28 when it ships with a Triathlon shade), the Caséta Smart Bridge Pro about $180, the RadioRA 3 processor kit about $549. Our published Lutron shade figures carry a Pico per opening and the hub or processor once per house; keypads for RadioRA 3 and HomeWorks are quoted per room with the engraving. The Lutron Price Builder shows each control as its own line. Lutron Price Builder · published pricing.

Can you reprogram or replace controls on Lutron shades you installed? #

Yes. Pairing a new Pico, moving a shade to a new hub, replacing a keypad, rebuilding scenes and schedules, and changing a shade channel where a neighbour's radio interferes are all service calls we take on the Lutron systems we installed, in Fort Lauderdale, Miami, Boca Raton and Palm Beach.
