Complete dark, complete privacy
A new luxury home in Boca Raton, with a master bedroom whose windows sit at angles - a bay of three over the water, and a slider onto the terrace with two more windows beside it. The brief was personal: the owners have a hard time sleeping and needed a completely dark room. On angled glass a blackout roller shade alone cannot get there - light finds the gaps at every edge - and blackout shades leave a second problem in a bedroom: whenever they are up, the room is open to view.
The answer was blackout drapery on two bent motorized tracks. Each track follows the angle of its wall, so the drapery closes as one continuous line around the corners and, just as important, stacks completely clear of every window when it opens - the whole view by day, darkness and privacy by night. The fabric is Villa Nova Toronto FR in Chalk, a 290 cm wide-width recycled FR plain with a relaxed linen look, made up as blackout drapery in our Fort Lauderdale workroom.
Everywhere else, fourteen Lutron Sivoia QS Triathlon battery-powered roller shades in Lutron's Aura screen - 5% Parchment in the master bedroom and on the terrace slider, in the guest bedroom, office, nursery and loft, and 3% Parchment in the master bathroom and on the stairs - inside-mounted behind a black architectural fascia with a designer bottom bar. Pico remotes in the rooms, whole-house scenes from the Lutron app, and Siri through the Caséta Smart Bridge Pro; the Lutron system was supplied and programmed with our smart-home partner, Adom Smart Home of Pompano Beach.

Why drapery instead of blackout shades in the master bedroom?
The windows are set at angles. A blackout roller on angled glass leaves light at its edges, and while blackout shades are up a bedroom is open to view. Drapery on tracks bent to follow the walls closes as one line around the corners and stacks clear of the glass when open - true dark and privacy at night, the whole window by day.
What is a bent drapery track?
