Lutron Triathlon
Lutron's battery shading line: roller, honeycomb and wood-blind shades on D cells rated three to five years, to 144 in on the WIDR headrail, on every Lutron keypad and system. Specified, installed and programmed by our own Lutron-trained team from Miami to Palm Beach.
Lutron's battery line for finished homes: D cells rated three to five years, shades to 144 in, every Lutron fabric and keypad
Triathlon is the Lutron shade for a house whose walls are closed. Roller shades, honeycomb shades and wood blinds run on six to sixteen store-bought D cells that Lutron rates at three to five years at two cycles a day, change from a headrail that tips forward without taking the shade down, and hold the same 1/8 in bottom-bar alignment as the wired lines. Standard rollers run 19.5 to 108 in wide; the WIDR headrail takes a battery shade to 144 in wide and tall, a 12 by 12 ft window with no wire in the wall.
It shares its chassis with Serena, Lutron's direct line, and adds what a dealer project needs: the architectural fascias, the wired option for windows nobody can reach, and native places on RA2 Select, RadioRA 3 and HomeWorks. Where the wiring exists, Sivoia QS takes over; where the roller is meant to be seen, Palladiom.
- Price, published: about $1,293 for one 72 by 84 in Triathlon roller shade at Lutron's list price, installed and programmed, with its Pico, the Smart Hub Pro, the first batteries and delivery; a whole main level of eight about $9,763. The Lutron Price Builder prices Triathlon to the dollar, fabric by fabric.
- Where we installed it: fourteen Triathlon rollers in Aura Parchment behind black architectural fascia at a luxury home in Boca Raton, on Pico remotes, the Lutron app and Siri through a Caséta Smart Bridge Pro; Triathlon shades run in our Miami Beach showroom.
- Who we are: Exotic Shades & Draperies holds a direct Lutron shading account with Lutron Residential Systems (September 2026) and Lutron's LCI Full Shades Qualification Training certificate (April 2026); the same in-house team measures, installs and programs every Lutron project and services Lutron systems installed by others.
Triathlon at a glance #
What Lutron publishes about its battery line and what we quote it at, in one place.
- PowerD-cell alkaline batteries, 6 for the narrowest widths, 8 for most and 12 or 16 with Battery Boost; or 12 V wired with a 15 ft power wire to a plug-in supply, or a power panel feeding up to 10 shades. Not field-convertible: the power is chosen when the shade is ordered.
- Battery lifeThree to five years, Lutron's rating at two full cycles a day; Battery Boost extends it by up to 80% or up to six years on Lutron's brochure. The first set is included in our price.
- SizesRollers 19.5 to 108 in wide on Lutron's specification; the WIDR headrail from 8 ft up to 144 in wide and 144 in tall, with Integrated Deflection Reduction and a maximum roll-up of 3 in on a 12 by 12 ft shade. Honeycomb to 96 by 96 in. Wood blinds 20 to 72 in wide, or 40 to 96 in as two blinds under one valance.
- Published noise38 dBA measured 3 ft from the drive, on the specification Lutron shares between Serena and Triathlon rollers.
- AlignmentIntelligent Hembar Alignment: the battery drive compensates for fabric weight and battery voltage so a bank of Triathlon shades holds the same line, within 1/8 in, as a wired Sivoia QS bank.
- StylesRoller (sheer, translucent and blackout fabrics), insulating honeycomb (single cell, double cell, room darkening) and 2 in basswood wood blinds with motorized tilt and a cordless lift; Lutron's battery Roman-shade kit for a Roman.
- FabricThe full Lutron library, 921 colourways in 56 designs; every roller fabric Lutron sells to us is priced on Triathlon in the Price Builder.
- Controls and systemsPico remotes and the 4-Group remote with no hub; the Lutron app, Alexa, Google Home and Apple Home through the Caséta Smart Bridge Pro; RA2 Select, RadioRA 2, RadioRA 3 and HomeWorks QS and QSX with seeTouch, GRAFIK T, Sunnata and Palladiom keypads; Crestron, Control4 and Savant through the Lutron processor.
- Mounting3.00 in inside-mount depth on Lutron's roller specification, 3.50 in with fascia; the architectural fascia is 3 3/8 in deep (4 1/2 in on WIDR) and 4 15/16 in high, in White, Black, Bronze or Silver; Lutron's measuring note asks 5 in of mounting space for Triathlon and WIDR.
- How it is boughtMeasured, specified and quoted per window by a Lutron dealer; installed, paired and programmed by us. Serena is the same shade sold direct with published prices.
- PriceAbout $1,293 for one 72 by 84 in roller shade at Lutron's list price, installed and programmed; about $9,763 for a whole main level of eight. WIDR shades run roughly 2.5 times a standard Triathlon in our quotes.
- Where we use itFinished homes and condos, renovations with the ceilings closed, windows and doors with no power, and any home on Caséta, RA2 Select or RadioRA 3 that wants Lutron fabrics and Lutron keypads without opening a wall.

| Style | Sizes, per Lutron | Power and batteries | Top treatment and look |
|---|---|---|---|
| Roller shade, standard | 19.5 to 108 in wide; Lutron's brochure gives rollers as tall as 144 in | 6 D cells under 26 in, 8 from 26 in; 12 or 16 with Battery Boost above 37.5 in; or 12 V wired | Architectural fascia (3 3/8 in deep), fabric-wrapped fascia, or exposed headrail (up to 3 in deep); light gaps 5/8 in outside mount and 11/16 in inside mount with fascia |
| Roller shade, WIDR | Shades wider than 8 ft, up to 144 in wide and 144 in tall, a 12 by 12 ft opening on batteries | Up to 16 D cells; Integrated Deflection Reduction keeps the wide tube straight; maximum roll-up 3 in on a 12 by 12 ft shade | The same three top treatments, 1 1/8 in deeper (fascia 4 1/2 in); the fascia height matches standard Triathlon so mixed jobs line up |
| Honeycomb shade | Up to 96 in wide by 96 in tall | Store-bought D cells behind Lutron's Tap n' Tilt headrail; plug-in power available | Colour-matched headrail, left exposed or paired with your own top treatment; single-cell light-filtering, double-cell insulating, or room-darkening |
| Wood blind | 20 to 72 in wide as a single blind; 40 to 96 in as two blinds under one valance | AA lithium or D alkaline by width, 12 V wiring, or a manual version | 2 in North American basswood slats in 12 stained and 6 painted finishes; motorized tilt with View and Privacy presets, cordless manual lift; Easton or Morgan valance |
| Roman shade (battery kit) | Built around Lutron's Roman-shade kit with spring modules balanced to the shade | D cells and a Pico; bottom limit set at the factory, springs balanced by the installer | Our own workroom sews the Roman; Lutron supplies the drive and the balancing |
The roller is where Triathlon earns its place. Lutron's standard Triathlon covers almost every residential window, and the WIDR headrail, with its wider tube and Integrated Deflection Reduction, carries a battery shade across a 12 by 12 ft opening, the kind of glass that otherwise forces a wire into a finished wall. In our quotes a WIDR shade comes in at roughly 2.5 times a standard Triathlon, which is why on a wall of oversize glass with no wiring we price a Somfy WireFree or a wired Somfy next to it before recommending anything, and why running a wire, if the building allows it, often wins. Every maker's width limit is on how wide can a roller shade be.
The honeycomb is the insulating option, single or double cell, and the one Florida client who wants the view blocked and the heat kept out tends to choose; the figures for cellular against pleated fabric are on pleated vs cellular shades and honeycomb shades. The wood blind tilts by motor from a Pico with View and Privacy presets and lifts by hand from the bottom rail, with no cord at the window; sizes, finishes and the wired Sivoia version are on Lutron wood blinds.
The batteries: how long, how many, how changed #
Lutron publishes its assumptions, which is rare, so the three-to-five-year figure can be read properly.
3 to 5 years
Lutron's rating for Triathlon on D cells, assuming two full up-and-down cycles a day (Application Note 561). Fewer movements and a small system stretch it; sensors and heavy radio traffic shorten it.
6, 8 or 16
D cells per roller shade: 6 under 26 in wide, 8 from 26 in, up to 16 with Battery Boost; the wide WIDR roller takes 16. Lutron ships the shade without them, so we add them at $2.50 each.
up to 80%
Battery Boost extends battery life by up to 80%, or up to six years on Lutron's brochure, for about $107 at Lutron list on a standard Triathlon.
1 red blink / 5 s
Low batteries: replace within about three months. Solid red while moving: within about two weeks. A shade moving at half speed is the other sign. We show you both at the walkthrough.
Changing them takes a minute and no ladder work on the shade itself: the headrail tips forward on its brackets, the battery tray comes out, and the headrail snaps back. Lutron asks for alkaline D cells, all new, all from one package, and names Duracell Coppertop; no lithium, carbon-zinc or rechargeable D cells. Where a window is out of reach, the wired version takes a 12 V plug-in supply on a 15 ft power wire, or a power panel feeds up to ten shades; that choice is made when the shade is ordered, because Lutron does not convert a battery Triathlon to wired power in the field. On a Caséta or RA2 Select system with motion sensors, Lutron's note says keeping the system to four sensors or fewer holds the battery loss to 25% or less, and points to wired or panel-powered shades where there will be more; we design the system around that.
Battery shades keep working through a power cut, which matters here from June to November: what each system does when the power goes out is on motorized shades in a power outage, and the blink codes, the hibernation reset and the battery steps are on the Lutron programming guide.
Depth, fascia and the look at the window #
A Triathlon shade is sized for the widest glass the line carries, and that sets how it sits in the frame.
Lutron's roller specification puts Triathlon at 3.00 in of inside-mount depth, 3.50 in with the fascia; the architectural fascia itself is 3 3/8 in deep and 4 15/16 in high (4 1/2 in deep on WIDR), and Lutron's measuring note asks for 5 in of mounting space for Triathlon and WIDR. Many South Florida window frames are about 3 in deep, so a Triathlon shade often sits proud of the frame or outside-mounts above it; the fabric roll-up of the actual fabric and drop plus the fascia is what decides it, and we check that at the measure, not the tube diameter alone.
Three top treatments: the architectural fascia in White, Black, Bronze or Silver, 20 3/4 to 96 in wide (to 144 in on WIDR), the fabric-wrapped fascia in the shade's own fabric, or the exposed headrail for a pocket or a custom valance. With fascia the light gaps are 5/8 in on an outside mount and 11/16 in inside. The Boca Raton home below runs black architectural fascia with Lutron's designer bottom bar, and the fascia adds about $140 to $281 at Lutron list across 24 to 96 in of width. Pockets, side channels and the fully hidden version are on recessed window treatments; how we build a roller shade, bar by bar, on roller shades.
Controls and systems #
Triathlon is the battery shade that speaks system: it joins the same keypads and scenes as the wired lines.
No hub
Pico and the 4-Group remote
A Pico pairs to the shade in ten seconds from the Shade Button and works from 30 ft, on its own battery, mounted on the wall or a pedestal. The 4-Group RF remote runs four groups of shades. Both keep working if the internet drops. Pico and keypads.
App and voice
Caséta Smart Bridge Pro
Triathlon needs the Pro hub (L-BDGPRO2-WH, about $180 at Lutron list; the standard Caséta hub does not support it), which adds the Lutron app, schedules, control from anywhere and Alexa, Google Home and Apple Home. Each hub handles up to 75 devices. The Boca Raton home runs this way, with two repeaters covering the house.
Whole-home Lutron
RA2 Select, RadioRA 3, HomeWorks
Native. In RadioRA 3 and HomeWorks homes the shades are added and their limits set in Lutron Designer by the dealer, and they answer Sunnata, seeTouch, GRAFIK T and Palladiom keypads, timeclocks and scenes with the lighting. Owners run scenes and schedules in the Lutron app.
Other systems
Crestron, Control4, Savant
Through the Lutron processor the shades live on: Crestron Home pairs natively with HomeWorks and the RadioRA lines, and Lutron's RadioRA 3 list adds Control4, Savant, URC, RTI, Elan, Kaleidescape and AMX. A Triathlon shade on its own Pico joins nothing; put it on the processor and it joins everything. Lutron vs Crestron.

Wired Somfy carries a 24 V power supply per shade; the same 72 by 84 in shade on a Somfy WireFree battery motor is about $933, and the whole main level about $8,287. We sell Lutron at Lutron's list price with installation and programming included and publish it; on a whole project that is about a quarter to a third above Somfy WireFree, or roughly 1.5 to 2 times wired Somfy. Serena is quoted per project. Full list: published pricing · cost by system · instant price.
The Triathlon column is the one most of our Lutron quotes are built on. Lutron's configurator prices a Triathlon roller in a flat band below 66 in of height and then by width and height in steps, with the fascia, the bottom bar and Battery Boost as adders, a Pico at about $28 when it ships with the shade, and the Smart Hub Pro once per house. The Lutron Price Builder reads those grids, so the figure for your own windows is Lutron's to the dollar or the next standard size up, never below. Serena, the same chassis sold direct, is quoted per project; its published retail figures are on Serena vs Sivoia QS.

Triathlon, asked and answered
How long do Lutron Triathlon batteries last? #
Lutron rates Triathlon at three to five years on replaceable D batteries, and its battery-life application note says the rating assumes two full up-and-down cycles a day. Fewer movements and a stand-alone shade push it toward the top of the range; a large system with motion or daylight sensors on the shade channel shortens it. Battery Boost extends the figure by up to 80%, or up to six years on Lutron's brochure. The shade tells you when: one red blink every five seconds means replace within about three months, solid red while moving within about two weeks. Steps and blink codes: the Lutron programming guide.
How many batteries does a Triathlon shade take, and are they included? #
Six D cells under 26 in wide, eight from 26 in, and twelve or sixteen with Battery Boost; the wide WIDR roller takes sixteen. Lutron ships the shade without them, so our price adds the first set at $2.50 a cell. Lutron asks for alkaline D cells, all new and from one package, and names Duracell Coppertop; it rules out lithium, carbon-zinc and rechargeable D cells. The headrail tips forward on its brackets to change them, without taking the shade down.
Can a Triathlon shade be wired instead of running on batteries? #
Yes, as a 12 V wired version with a 15 ft power wire to a plug-in supply, or on a power panel that feeds up to ten shades, for windows nobody can reach or systems with many sensors. The choice is made when the shade is ordered: Lutron does not convert a battery Triathlon to wired power in the field. For a whole house of wired shades on 35 V low voltage, with coupling, pockets and drapery tracks, the line is Sivoia QS. Read Lutron Sivoia QS.
Triathlon or Serena? #
Same chassis, same Pico, same 38 dBA and the same three-to-five-year battery rating, on one Lutron specification sheet. Serena is sold direct with published prices and lists Caséta and Pico controls; Triathlon is the dealer version that adds RA2 Select, RadioRA 2 and 3, HomeWorks, the seeTouch and Palladiom keypads, the architectural fascias, the wired option and the full fabric library. One bedroom in a finished condo is usually Serena money; a house on a Lutron system is Triathlon. Read Serena by Lutron.
How wide can a Triathlon shade be? #
Lutron's roller specification runs standard Triathlon from 19.5 to 108 in wide. Above 8 ft Lutron's WIDR headrail takes a battery shade to 144 in wide and 144 in tall, a 12 by 12 ft opening, with Integrated Deflection Reduction to keep the wide tube straight and a maximum roll-up of 3 in. In our quotes a WIDR shade comes in at roughly 2.5 times a standard Triathlon, so on a wall of oversize glass we price a Somfy WireFree, a wired Somfy and a wired Sivoia QS beside it. Every maker's limit: how wide can a roller shade be.
How quiet is a Triathlon shade? #
Lutron's specification for Serena and Triathlon rollers states 38 dBA measured 3 ft from the drive. For comparison, Lutron publishes 35 dBA for the Sivoia QS Roller 64, under 44 dBA for the Sivoia QS roller range and under 35 dBA for Palladiom. In a bedroom all of them are quiet; the fascia, the pocket and the fabric change what you hear more than the number does. Every maker's figure with its condition: the quietest roller shade motors.
Does Triathlon work with Alexa, Google Home and Apple Home? #
Yes, through the Caséta Smart Bridge Pro. The Pro hub is required for Triathlon (the standard Caséta hub does not support it); it adds the Lutron app, schedules and control from anywhere, and the Caséta system links to Amazon Alexa, Google Home and Apple Home. Apple Home needs a hub with a 2 in its model number and the current Lutron app. A Pico remote keeps working if the internet drops. On RadioRA 3 and HomeWorks the same shades answer Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home and josh.ai through the processor.
Does Triathlon work with RadioRA 3, HomeWorks, Crestron or Control4? #
Natively with the Lutron systems: Triathlon is listed for Caséta (with the Pro hub), RA2 Select, RadioRA 2 and 3 and HomeWorks QS and QSX, where a Lutron dealer adds the shades in Lutron Designer and they answer the house keypads and scenes. Crestron Home pairs natively with HomeWorks and the RadioRA lines, and Lutron's RadioRA 3 integration list covers Control4, Savant, URC, RTI, Elan, Kaleidescape and AMX, so a Triathlon shade on a Lutron processor joins any of those houses. Lutron vs Crestron · Control4 shades.
Does Triathlon make wood blinds and honeycomb shades? #
Yes. Triathlon wood blinds are 2 in North American basswood slats in 12 stained and 6 painted finishes, 20 to 72 in wide as a single blind or 40 to 96 in as two blinds under one valance, with a motorized tilt that stores View and Privacy angles and a cordless manual lift. Triathlon honeycomb shades run to 96 by 96 in in single-cell, double-cell and room-darkening fabrics behind Lutron's Tap n' Tilt headrail. Both take the same Pico and the same systems as the roller. Read Lutron wood blinds and honeycomb shades.
What does a Lutron Triathlon shade cost? #
On our published price list, at Lutron's list price, installed and programmed and before tax: about $1,293 for one 72 by 84 in Triathlon roller shade, about $1,475 at 96 by 108 in, about $4,183 for three openings at 96 by 120 in and about $9,763 for a whole main level of eight. Each figure carries a Pico per opening, the Smart Hub Pro, the first D cells and 4% delivery. The same windows on Somfy WireFree are about a quarter less; on wired Sivoia QS about $2,287 and $15,141. The Lutron Price Builder prices your own windows, fabric by fabric, at list. Lutron Price Builder · published pricing.
Do you install Lutron Triathlon in Boca Raton, Delray Beach, Palm Beach, Miami Beach and Sunny Isles Beach? #
Yes. Our published Triathlon install is a luxury home in Boca Raton, fourteen rollers in Aura Parchment on Pico remotes and the Lutron app; Triathlon shades run in our Miami Beach showroom, and the same team measures and installs from Palm Beach and Delray Beach to Sunny Isles Beach and Miami. Battery shades go into finished condos from Brickell to Bal Harbour without opening a wall. Boca Raton · Palm Beach · Miami Beach · all areas.
Can Triathlon go into a finished condo without construction? #
That is what it is for. A Triathlon shade needs no electrician, no conduit and no construction approval in most buildings: brackets, the shade, its batteries and a Pico. Where the window frame is shallow the shade outside-mounts above the glass, and where a slider is wider than 108 in the WIDR headrail or a coupled wired shade takes over. We send building management our certificate of insurance before every condominium installation. Condo window treatments.
I already have Caséta. Can I add Triathlon shades to it? #
If the hub is the Smart Bridge Pro, yes: the shades are added in the Lutron app and join the lighting scenes, schedules and voice assistants already there. If it is the standard Caséta hub, Lutron lists Serena for it but not Triathlon, so the hub is swapped for the Pro (about $180 at Lutron list) or the shades go in as Serena. We measure before the order, mount the shades, set the limits, pair the hub and program the Picos and schedules either way. Lutron service and repair covers shades already in the house.

The space feels modern and elegant without losing its at home feeling. From start to finish top notch work. I highly recommend them if you want your place to look like something out of a magazine.”
“I’m really happy with my new curtains! The team from Exotic Shades came to my place helped me choose the right fabric, and guided me through the whole process. Everything happened exactly as it was supposed to. Great service and beautiful results. Highly recommend A+”
Exotic Shades & Draperies, Fort Lauderdale and Miami Beach
Exotic Shades & Draperies is a South Florida window-treatment company that designs, sews and installs its own work: Lutron and Somfy motorized shades, custom draperies sewn in our Fort Lauderdale workroom by five in-house seamstresses, plantation shutters and blinds. Established in South Florida in 2024, backed by more than 20 years of window-treatment manufacturing and installation experience. Lutron certified dealer, Somfy Expert, Crestron and Control4 integration. The same in-house team measures, installs and programs every project; when shading has to integrate with another control system, we bring in our smart-home partner Adom Smart Home.
