How Wide Can One Motorized Roller Shade Be? Maximum Widths by Motor, Tube and Fabric

The honest answer is a number per system, and it is usually the fabric roll, not the motor, that sets it. Here are the makers' published limits for Lutron, Somfy, Crestron and Vertilux, the roll widths of the fabrics we cut, and the widest shades we have hung in South Florida.

The Short Answer

How wide can one motorized roller shade be?

One motorized roller shade runs to about 10 ft wide in most fabrics and 12 ft in the widest, and the limit is usually the fabric roll, not the motor. Solar screens come on 98, 122 or 126 in rolls (Mermet, Phifer), Lutron's fabrics stop at 116 to 124 in, and blackouts at 94 to 118 in. The drives go further: Lutron's Sivoia QS Roller 300 and Palladiom take a single panel to 12 ft (144 in) wide, Lutron's Roller 64 WIDR and Triathlon WIDR to 144 in on a 3 in tube, Crestron's 2.75 in tube motor to 168 in on its product page and 180 in in its guide specification. Somfy and Vertilux publish no width at all: they rate a motor by torque and by the weight it lifts, and the shade maker sizes the tube to the span.

Past the roll width there are two honest routes. Railroad the fabric, turning the roll sideways so one piece is as wide as the roll is long and no taller than the roll was wide, which most screens allow and most blackouts do not; or couple the opening into two or three shades on one drive, with the hembars set in line, which Lutron (up to six panels on a Roller 100, 200CW or 300), Crestron (up to six) and Somfy's Sonesse ULTRA 50 (up to six) all publish. In our own work the widest single shade is 110 in, in 2.5 in of head depth, on a reinforced tube at The Hemispheres; our price list runs to 144 in per shade and prices anything wider as coupled shades.

  • Fabric first. The roll width of the fabric you chose decides whether one piece covers the glass. Check it before the motor.
  • Then the tube. A wider shade needs a fatter tube so it does not sag; sag puts a V in the fabric and makes it roll crooked. Lutron's WIDR 3 in tube and Crestron's 2.75 in tube exist for this.
  • Then the drive. Lutron rates its wired drives by square feet of fabric (100, 150, 200, 225, 300 sq ft); Somfy and Vertilux by torque and weight; the battery lines by width (Triathlon 108 in, Serena 108 in, Caseta 96 in).
  • Depth follows height. The taller the shade, the fatter the roll at the head: Lutron's Roller 300 rolls to 5.5 in, Palladiom to 3 in, and a 3 in deep window frame holds much less than that.

Compiled by Exotic Shades & Draperies in Fort Lauderdale from the makers' published documents, with the fabrics we actually cut and the widest shades we have hung in South Florida. Every number links to the document it came from, and where a maker publishes no width we say so rather than guess.

Three Limits

Fabric roll, tube deflection, motor torque, in that order #

A roller shade is one piece of fabric on one tube, turned by one motor. Each of the three has a limit, and they bite in a fixed order.

Limit 1

The fabric roll

Fabric is woven to a fixed width and sold by the yard off the roll. A shade cut straight from the roll can be as wide as the roll and as tall as the length you buy. Most solar screens are 98 or 122 to 126 in wide; Lutron's fabrics run to 116 to 124 in; blackouts 94 to 118 in. That is why so many "maximum width" answers land near 10 ft.

Turning the roll sideways (railroading) swaps the two: the shade can then be as wide as you like, within the drive and tube limits, but no taller than the roll was wide. Woven screens take it; many blackout and patterned fabrics do not.

Limit 2

Tube deflection

Crestron's fabric guide puts it plainly: as a shade gets wider "the metal tube begins to sag due to the diameter of the tube and the weight of the fabric", and when the tube sags "the fabric sags and produces a 'V' or 'A' shape". Lutron's own patent for a low-deflection tube says the same: sag "may cause the shade material of a roller shade to wrinkle as the shade rolls up".

The cure is diameter. Lutron's standard Roller 100 tube is 2.5 in; its WIDR tube is 3 in and "allows for shades up to 180 in wide". Crestron moves from a 2.5 in tube at 133 to 150 in to a 2.75 in tube at 168 to 180 in; its 4 in steel XL tube goes to 192 in, with Crestron recommending 180 in because deflection rises 30% over the last foot.

Limit 3

Motor torque and area

The motor rarely sets the width; it sets the weight it can lift and the area it can run all day. Lutron rates each Sivoia QS wired drive by square feet of fabric, 100 to 300 sq ft, and its battery drives by width. Somfy rates its Sonesse motors by torque, 1.1 Nm on a Sonesse 28 up to 10 Nm on a Sonesse 50, and sizes them on a weight chart. Vertilux prints the weight each VTi motor lifts, 10 lb to 118 lb.

Which is why a 12 ft blackout with a heavy hembar may want a Sonesse 50 or a Roller 300 while a 12 ft 3% screen runs happily on much less.

Reading the Lutron rows. Lutron's wired Sivoia QS drives are named for the square feet they move: a Roller 100 moves 100 sq ft of fabric, so a 12 ft wide shade can be 8 ft tall on it, while a Roller 300 takes 300 sq ft and a single panel 12 ft wide by 30 ft tall. Width on those drives is set by the WIDR tube (180 in) and the fabric roll, not the motor. Lutron's battery lines are rated by width instead: Triathlon 108 in, Triathlon WIDR 144 in, Serena 108 in, Caseta 96 in.

Reading the Somfy rows. Somfy publishes torque, speed and the smallest tube each motor fits, then a sizing chart of width by height at a fabric weight. On a 72 by 84 in shade in a 3% screen a Sonesse 30 (2 Nm) is plenty; a 12 ft blackout on a 2.5 in tube is Sonesse 50 territory. Which motor we put on which shade is on the four shade motors we install.

Railroading, in one paragraph. A 122 in E Screen roll cut straight gives a shade up to 122 in wide and as tall as you buy. Railroaded, the same roll gives a shade as wide as the drive and tube allow and up to 122 in tall. The weave turns 90 degrees with it, which a plain screen hides and a stripe or a textured blackout does not; Phifer does not recommend railroading its 7000 series blackouts, so on those the roll is the limit. Crestron's guide specification says it the short way: "Railroad material where material roll width is less than the required width of fabric." We tell you on the quote which way your fabric runs.

Past the Limit

Coupled shades: one motor, two or three tubes #

When the glass is wider than one piece of fabric, the opening is split into two or three shades that share one drive through couplers, so they start, stop and stay level together.

Lutron

Up to six panels on one drive

Lutron's in-line coupler joins up to six fabric panels on one Roller 100, 200CW or 300 drive; the angled coupler, for a bay or a corner, takes up to three on a Roller 100, 150 or 200CW. The Roller 150 is limited to three panels. Lutron calls the Roller 300 version LIFT, Lutron Intelligent Facade Technology, and the maximum bracket-to-bracket length of a coupled run is 15 ft.

Crestron

Up to six, or two groups of six

Crestron's coupler brackets join "up to six roller shades" on one QMT motor, "depends on shade width and fabric selection", and its dual coupler runs two groups of up to six, for a dual shade across a wide wall. The guide specification caps the shade at 20 ft tall on the 2.5 and 2.75 in tubes.

Somfy

Sonesse ULTRA 50: up to six shades

Somfy's product page for the Sonesse ULTRA 50 AC says it has "high torque to power up up to six shades" on one motor. Somfy's smaller Sonesse 28, 30 and 40 motors are one-shade motors; a wall of them is grouped on the remote or the hub instead, each shade on its own motor. In the family room at the Bay Drive mansion several shades run on one ULTRA 50.

What you see. A coupled run shows a light gap of about 1.5 in where the two fabrics meet (Lutron's figure for the Roller 100), hidden by a fascia or a pocket, and two hembars that must be set to the same height to the millimeter, which is the part of the job that separates a shade that looks like one from two shades next to each other. Our price list prices an opening wider than 144 in as two coupled shades, per opening, not per shade.

Height and Depth

The taller the shade, the fatter the roll #

Width decides the tube; the drop decides the roll. Every foot of fabric wraps once more around the tube, so a tall shade needs a deeper head: Lutron publishes a minimum mounting depth of 3 in for its most compact wired drive, the Roller 20, 3.5 in for the Roller 64 and 5 in for the Roller 100; Palladiom's exposed roller allows a fabric roll of 3 in, or 3.5 in on its extended brackets; the Roller 300's fabric roll runs to 5.5 in on a 3.06 in clerestory tube. Many South Florida window frames are about 3 in deep, which is why we measure the head and the drop before the system is chosen, and why a tall shade in a shallow frame often goes outside the frame or into a recessed pocket cut for it.

Crestron adds one more rule of thumb for very tall shades: keep the height within about three times the width, because a tall narrow shade rolls crooked (Crestron calls it telescoping) more easily than a square one.

What We Have Hung

The widest shades we have installed in South Florida #

Hallandale Beach

110 in wide in 2.5 in of depth

At The Hemispheres the corner glass gave us two and a half inches of head depth. The 110 in shade went on a special reinforced tube that keeps the span from bowing, on Somfy Sonesse 30 motors at 24 V. Our widest single shade in a shallow head.

Southwest Ranches

Coupled shades on 22 ft of glass

At Landmark Ranch Estates the family room glass runs 22 ft. It is covered by coupled shades on Somfy Sonesse 50 wired motors, hembars in line, with the top sealed into the pocket and a corner light gap we closed on site.

Pompano Beach

2.5 in tubes on a new tower

At Salato the shades run on 2.5 in tubes with Sonesse 50 RTS motors at 120 V through the building's conduit: the tube chosen for the span, the motor for the weight.

Our Practice

How we size a wide shade #

Our practice The order we work in on every opening over about 8 ft.

  1. Measure the glass, the head and the drop. Width at three heights, the depth available at the head, and the full drop, because the drop sets the roll and the roll sets the depth.
  2. Check the fabric roll. The width of the roll of the fabric you chose decides one piece or two. If the opening is wider than the roll, we tell you whether the fabric can be railroaded and what that does to its pattern.
  3. Pick the tube for the span. 1.5 or 2 in tubes on ordinary windows, 2.5 in past about 8 ft, 2.75 or 3 in reinforced tubes past about 10 ft, exactly as Lutron's and Crestron's documents describe.
  4. Pick the drive for the area and the weight. Lutron by square feet of fabric or by the battery line's width limit; Somfy and Vertilux from the weight chart with the finished fabric and hembar weighed, not guessed.
  5. Plan the couplers and the hembars. On a coupled run we set the split where a mullion or a frame hides it, and set both hembars to the same height at installation.
  6. Price it honestly. One shade to 144 in on the published price list; wider openings quoted as coupled shades per opening, with the tube and the drive named on the quote.
Good to Know

Wide roller shades: questions

How wide can a motorized roller shade be? #

About 10 ft in most fabrics and 12 ft in the widest ones, because the fabric roll is the first limit: solar screens come 98, 122 or 126 in wide and Lutron's fabrics stop at 116 to 124 in. The drives go further: Lutron's Roller 300 and Palladiom take one panel to 12 ft, Lutron's WIDR tube allows shades to 180 in, and Crestron's 2.75 in tube motor runs to 168 to 180 in. Past the roll, the fabric is railroaded or the opening is split into coupled shades on one motor.

Can one roller shade cover a 12 ft sliding glass door? #

Yes, with the right fabric and tube: a 122 in Mermet E Screen roll or a 126 in Phifer SheerWeave roll gives one piece up to that width, on a 2.5 or 3 in tube and a drive rated for the area, such as Lutron's Roller 100 (100 sq ft of fabric) or a Somfy Sonesse 50. In a blackout the roll is usually narrower (94 to 118 in), so a 12 ft blackout is normally two coupled shades.

What is a coupled roller shade? #

Two or more shades on one drive, joined through couplers so they start, stop and stay level together. Lutron couples up to six panels on a Roller 100, 200CW or 300 drive and three with its angled coupler; Crestron up to six; Somfy's Sonesse ULTRA 50 up to six shades. The join shows a light gap of about 1.5 in (Lutron's figure) that a fascia or a pocket hides.

What does railroading a fabric mean? #

Turning the roll sideways so the fabric's width becomes the shade's height. A 122 in roll then makes a shade as wide as the drive allows and up to 122 in tall. Plain woven screens railroad well; stripes and many blackouts do not, and Phifer does not recommend railroading its 7000 series blackouts.

Why does a wide roller shade get a V shape or roll crooked? #

Tube deflection. Crestron's fabric guide: as a shade gets wider the tube begins to sag from its own diameter and the fabric's weight, and when the tube sags the fabric produces a V or A shape; a tall narrow shade also tends to telescope, rolling up off square. The fix is a larger tube: Lutron's 3 in WIDR tube, Crestron's 2.75 in tube, or a reinforced tube like the one on our 110 in shade at The Hemispheres.

Does Somfy publish a maximum shade width? #

No. Somfy publishes torque (Sonesse 28 at 1.1 to 2 Nm, Sonesse 30 at 2 Nm, Sonesse 40 at 4 to 9 Nm, Sonesse 50 at 6 to 10 Nm at 120 V), speed, the smallest tube each motor fits, and a sizing chart of width by height at a fabric weight; the shade maker chooses the tube for the span. The Sonesse ULTRA 50 is rated to drive up to six shades.

How wide can a battery-powered roller shade be? #

Lutron publishes the widths: Triathlon 108 in, Triathlon WIDR 144 in on 6 to 16 D cells, Serena Smart Roller 108 in wide and 120 in tall, Caseta Smart Roller 96 in wide. Somfy's WireFree motors and Vertilux's RE-LION motors are rated by weight instead, 10 to 24 lb on the Vertilux battery motors, so the width depends on the fabric.

What is the widest shade Exotic Shades has installed? #

A 110 in single shade in 2.5 in of head depth at The Hemispheres in Hallandale Beach, on a special reinforced tube; and coupled shades across 22 ft of family-room glass at Landmark Ranch Estates in Southwest Ranches, on Sonesse 50 wired motors with the hembars in line.

Does the price change when a shade is wider than 144 in? #

Our published price list runs to 144 in per shade. A wider opening is priced as two coupled shades per opening, with the tube and the drive named on the quote; on Lutron, E Screen stops at 120 in wide, so the 144 in row is a coupled shade there too.

How deep must the pocket or the window frame be for a wide, tall shade? #

It follows the drop, not the width: Lutron publishes 3 in of mounting depth for the Roller 20, 3.5 in for the Roller 64, 5 in for the Roller 100; Palladiom allows a 3 in fabric roll (3.5 in on extended brackets); the Roller 300's roll runs to 5.5 in. Many South Florida frames are about 3 in deep, so tall shades go outside the frame or into a recessed pocket cut for them.

“I couldn’t believe how much of a change these new drapes could make! This company upgraded my apartment overlooking the water and it now has a fresh, art deco’ish vibe I can only picture in my head. The space feels modern and elegant without losing its at home feeling. From start to finish top notch work. I highly recommend them if you want your place to look like something out of a magazine.”

Who We Are

Exotic Shades & Draperies, Fort Lauderdale and Miami Beach

Exotic Shades & Draperies is a South Florida window-treatment company that designs, sews and installs its own work: Lutron and Somfy motorized shades, custom draperies sewn in our Fort Lauderdale workroom by five in-house seamstresses, plantation shutters and blinds. Established in South Florida in 2024, backed by more than 20 years of window-treatment manufacturing and installation experience. Lutron certified dealer, Somfy Expert, Crestron and Control4 integration. The same in-house team measures, installs and programs every project; when shading has to integrate with another control system, we bring in our smart-home partner Adom Smart Home.

Where We Install

Lutron, Somfy and Crestron systems sized to the span: the fabric roll checked first, the tube chosen for the width, the drive for the weight, coupled shades set level by hand. The same in-house team measures, builds, installs and programs from Miami Beach to West Palm Beach.
