The Short Answer

Lutron's direct line: the Triathlon chassis with a published price, for one room or a finished condo

Serena is the Lutron shade you can buy with a price on the screen. Roller, Open Roll, honeycomb and wood-blind shades on D-cell batteries or a 12 V plug-in supply, 19.5 to 108 in wide on Lutron's specification, 38 dBA at 3 ft, three to five years on a set of batteries at two cycles a day, controlled by a Pico remote, the Lutron app and a Caséta hub, and through it Alexa, Google Home and Apple Home. Lutron publishes one specification sheet for Serena and Triathlon: the shade is the same; what differs is how it is sold and which systems it joins.

For a bedroom, a first room or a condo that is already finished, Serena is usually the right answer and we say so. Once there is a RadioRA 3 or HomeWorks system, a keypad, a fascia specification or a window past the Serena store's 96 in, the same shade is ordered as Triathlon; once there is wiring, a wall of glass or a drapery track, it is Sivoia QS.

  • Price: Lutron publishes Serena retail, from $822 for a 4 by 6 ft roller with fascia, $778 for the Open Roll and $699 for a 3 by 5 ft wood blind, shipped to the house; Lutron's own Caséta Smart Shades launched in January 2025 at $399 for any size under 48 in. We quote Serena per project after the free measure; the dealer twin is priced at Lutron's list in our Lutron Price Builder, about $1,293 for a 72 by 84 in Triathlon shade installed and programmed.
  • What we do with it: measure before the order so the shade fits, mount it, set the limits, pair the hub and program the Picos, schedules and voice; and service Serena shades bought online, whoever supplied them.
  • Who we are: Exotic Shades & Draperies holds a direct Lutron shading account with Lutron Residential Systems (September 2026) and Lutron's LCI Full Shades Qualification Training certificate (April 2026); the same in-house team measures, installs and programs every Lutron project and services Lutron systems installed by others.

The Direct Line

What Serena is, and what it is not #

One specification sheet covers Serena and Triathlon rollers. The badge changes the route to the window, not the shade.

Lutron sells Serena on its own site with a price on the screen: pick the fabric from the store's hundred-odd options, enter the size, choose batteries or plug-in power, and the shade ships to the house with a Pico. It mounts on two brackets, pairs to the Pico in ten seconds from the Shade Button, and joins the Lutron app through a Caséta hub. That is the whole proposition, and for a bedroom or a finished condo it is a good one.

What the direct route leaves out is what a dealer project adds. The Serena store stops at 96 in wide and hands anything wider to an installer; Lutron's sheet runs the same chassis to 108 in, and the WIDR headrail to 144 in, as Triathlon. The architectural fascia in White, Black, Bronze or Silver, the full fabric library of 921 colourways, the Roman kit, and the places on RA2 Select, RadioRA 3 and HomeWorks with seeTouch, Sunnata and Palladiom keypads are all Triathlon. If the house will ever have a Lutron processor, or an integrator, or a keypad by the door, the shade should be ordered as Triathlon from the start; the fabrics and the radio are the same, but a shade does not change its system membership later, and a battery shade of either name cannot be re-powered as a 35 V Sivoia QS shade.

Lutron's simplest shade sits below both: the Caséta Smart Shades launched in January 2025 at $399 for any size under 48 in, set up in the Lutron app and paired with Caséta lighting. If a window fits its sizes and you are happy to install it yourself, it does the job, and we will say so at the consultation.

Power and Fit

Batteries, power and the window #

The same D cells and the same three-to-five-year rating as Triathlon, with Lutron's assumptions spelled out.

3 to 5 years

Lutron's rating on the Serena roller at two full cycles a day; two years at one cycle a day on the Open Roll (Application Note 561 and the Serena store).

6 to 16

D cells by width, Battery Boost above 37.5 in. They do not ship with the shade. Alkaline only; Lutron names Duracell Coppertop.

38 dBA

Measured 3 ft from the drive, on the specification Lutron shares between Serena and Triathlon rollers.

3.00 in

Jamb depth for an inside mount, 3.50 in with the optional fascia; shallower frames take an outside mount above the glass.

The 12 V wired version takes a 15 ft power wire to a plug-in supply, which suits a window above a stair or a shade that will run several times a day. Low batteries show as one red blink every five seconds (replace within about three months), solid red while moving (about two weeks) and a shade travelling at half speed; on a Caséta hub the Lutron app also raises an alert. Five red blinks every four seconds on Serena and Triathlon shades mean high condensing humidity, which in a South Florida bathroom means ventilate and let the shade dry. Every step, from pairing to the hibernation reset after dead batteries, is on the Lutron programming guide.

Control

Pico, app and voice #

No hub needed for the remote; a Caséta hub for everything else.

No hub

Pico remote

Ships with the shade. Open, close, raise, lower and a favorite position, from 30 ft, on a battery of its own, mounted to the wall or a pedestal without wiring. The 4-Group remote runs four groups. Both keep working if the internet drops. Pico and keypads.

App and schedules

Caséta hub

Either Caséta hub supports Serena (Triathlon needs the Pro): the shades are added in the Lutron app, with schedules, sunrise and sunset events, scenes with Caséta lighting and control from anywhere. Each hub handles up to 75 devices.

Voice

Alexa, Google Home, Apple Home

Through the Caséta system: link it in the Alexa or Google Home app, or add the hub to Apple Home (a hub with a 2 in its model number and the current Lutron app). Wood blinds tilt from Apple Home but do not lift, as they lift by hand.

The next step

RA2 Select, RadioRA 3, HomeWorks

Not on Serena's specification. The same chassis ordered as Triathlon joins them, with keypads at the wall and the lighting scenes. If the house is going that way, order Triathlon. Lutron Triathlon.

Lutron's retail figures are for the shade shipped to the house, to be mounted by the owner. Ours are for the dealer lines measured, installed, limit-set, paired and programmed, at Lutron's list price with that work included: about $1,293 for one 72 by 84 in Triathlon shade and about $2,287 on Sivoia QS wired, against about $933 for the same window on a Somfy WireFree motor and about $1,133 on wired Somfy. A bigger window, a fascia, a keypad and a programmed hub are most of the gap, not the badge. Serena is quoted per project after the free measure; for a Serena shade you have already bought, the install, pairing and programming are quoted as service.

Good to Know

Serena, asked and answered

How is Serena different from Triathlon? #

They share the chassis: Lutron publishes one specification sheet for Serena and Triathlon roller shades, 19.5 to 108 in wide, D-cell batteries or 12 V wired power, 38 dBA at 3 ft. Serena is sold direct with published prices and lists Caséta and Pico controls; Triathlon is the dealer version that adds RA2 Select, RadioRA 2 and 3, HomeWorks and their keypads, the WIDR headrail to 144 in, the architectural fascias, the Roman kit and the full fabric library. The fabrics and the radio carry over; the system membership does not. Read Lutron Triathlon.

How is Serena different from Palladiom or Sivoia QS? #

Serena runs on batteries or a 12 V plug-in and is sold with a published price; Sivoia QS runs on 35 V low-voltage wiring back to a supply or panel, is specified by a Lutron dealer, holds a bank of shades within 1/8 in, couples to 20 ft and runs the drapery tracks; Palladiom is the exposed roller with brackets meant to be seen, wired or wire-free. A battery Serena shade cannot be re-powered as a Sivoia QS shade later. If a whole-home system is two or three years away, the cheaper decision is usually to wire the windows now and put Serena or Triathlon only on the ones that cannot be reached. Serena vs Sivoia QS · Lutron Palladiom.

Does Serena work with Alexa, Google Home and Apple Home? #

Yes, through a Caséta hub, and either Caséta hub supports Serena. The shades are added in the Lutron app, then the Caséta system is linked in the Alexa or Google Home app or added to Apple Home, which needs a hub with a 2 in its model number and the current Lutron app. Wood blinds tilt from Apple Home but do not lift. The Pico remote works without the hub and keeps working if the internet drops.

How long do Serena batteries last, and how many does it take? #

Lutron rates the Serena roller at three to five years at two full cycles a day, and the Open Roll at two years at one cycle a day. A roller takes six to sixteen D cells by width, with Battery Boost above 37.5 in; they are not in the box. Alkaline only, per Lutron's battery note. The shade blinks red every five seconds when they are low, about three months before the end, and moves at half speed. Steps and codes: the Lutron programming guide.

Can Serena shades be hardwired? #

Yes, on 12 V: Lutron's specification lists wired power models with a 15 ft power wire and a plug-in supply of 120 to 240 V in, 12 V and 5 A out. That is a different thing from Sivoia QS, which is wired at 35 V and can be fed from a central power panel so there is no transformer at any window.

How wide can a Serena shade be? #

Lutron's specification covers 19.5 to 108 in wide on battery and wired power, and 19.5 to 63 in for the cordless manual version. The Serena store itself sells 19 7/8 to 96 in wide and up to 120 in tall and says anything wider needs a professional installer. Past 108 in the same chassis goes to 144 in on the Triathlon WIDR headrail, and past that a wired Sivoia QS shade couples to 20 ft. Every maker's limit: how wide can a roller shade be.

What does Serena cost? #

Lutron publishes Serena retail: from $822 for a 4 by 6 ft roller shade with fascia, $778 for the Open Roll and $699 for a 3 by 5 ft wood blind, shipped to the house; its Caséta Smart Shades start at $399 for any size under 48 in. We quote Serena per project after the free measure. The dealer twin, Triathlon, is about $1,293 for a 72 by 84 in shade at Lutron's list price, installed and programmed, in our Lutron Price Builder. Lutron Price Builder · published pricing.

Can you install and service a Serena shade I bought online? #

Yes. We measure before the order so the shade fits the frame, then mount it, set the limits, pair the hub and program the Pico remotes, schedules and voice assistants. For a Serena shade already in the house, our Lutron service page covers batteries, pairing, reprogramming and motor replacement, whoever supplied it. Lutron service and repair.

Does Serena make wood blinds and honeycomb shades? #

Yes. Serena wood blinds are 2 in basswood with a motorized tilt and a cordless manual lift, 20 to 72 in wide or 40 to 96 in as two blinds under one valance, in eight finishes with Easton or Morgan valances, with heights to 72 in on the Serena store; Lutron covers Serena and Triathlon wood blinds with one chassis specification. Serena honeycomb shades are the insulating version of the same battery drive. Read Lutron wood blinds.

Do you install Serena in Miami Beach, Boca Raton, Delray Beach and Palm Beach? #

Yes, usually as part of a larger project, or as Triathlon when the house has a Lutron system or the windows need fascias and keypads. One team covers Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach County from showrooms in Fort Lauderdale and Miami Beach; battery Lutron shades go into finished condos from Brickell to Bal Harbour without opening a wall. Miami Beach · Boca Raton · Palm Beach · all areas.

Can I start with Serena and move up later? #

Partly. The fabrics carry over and the radio is the same, so the look does not change when the rest of the house goes on a Lutron system. The shades themselves do not convert: Serena is listed for Caséta and Pico, the processor lines take Triathlon, and no battery shade becomes a 35 V Sivoia QS shade. If a RadioRA 3 or HomeWorks system is coming, order the first shades as Triathlon so they join it. Read all four Lutron lines compared.
