Solar Screens

The fabric that keeps the ocean and loses the glare

A solar screen is a woven fabric with a measured openness, from 0.5% to 10%, that you can see through. It stops most of the sun's heat and glare at the glass while the horizon, the pool and the boats stay visible through the weave. On a South Florida wall of glass it is the fabric we specify more than any other, and Lutron's library has 411 colourways of it in 17 designs: the fiberglass-core E Screen, T Screen and M Screen; the Basketweave family (Basketweave, 27, 90, 4000 Eco and the PVC-free Eco2); Sheerweave 4900 and 8000; SheerLite; the warm Aura card; the textured Jacquard; Natural Screen; and the aluminum-backed OmniaScreen Silver.

Every design page below shows each colourway with its openness and its published light figures: Tv (visible light transmitted), Ts (solar energy transmitted), Rs (solar energy reflected) and As (absorbed). Those four numbers, plus the colour, are what decide how a room feels behind the shade, and they are the numbers we use when we recommend a fabric for a specific exposure.

How To Choose

How we choose the openness in South Florida

1%

Direct west or south-west glass, rooms with a TV or monitors facing the window, and anywhere glare is the complaint. The view is soft but present in a light colour, faint in a dark one.

3%

The default for ocean and Intracoastal walls: the horizon stays readable, glare is under control, heat gain drops sharply. Most of the screens we install on the water are 3% or 5%.

5%

View rooms with morning or filtered sun, covered terraces, and living rooms where the client wants the water to be the picture. Turnberry Ocean Club runs E Screen 5%.

10%

North-facing rooms and shaded elevations where heat is not the problem and the maximum view is the point. Never on a west wall.

In Detail

Light colour or dark colour?

Dark weaves (charcoal, black, ebony) give the clearest view and the least glare because they absorb stray light instead of scattering it, but they also absorb heat. Light weaves (white, pearl, chalk) reflect heat and keep the room brighter, at the cost of a hazier view. Two-tone weaves such as White/Linen or Charcoal/Grey split the difference. The KOOLBLACK versions of E Screen and T Screen are the exception to the rule: charcoal weaves built to reflect solar energy, so a dark, clear-view fabric can go on hot glass.

Fabric colour also sets what the building sees. In a condo tower the association may require a uniform exterior appearance; several designs (Basketweave 27, T Screen, Sheerweave 4900) offer a choice of back colour so the inside and the outside can be decided separately.

Our Projects

Solar screens on our Lutron installations

Our Lutron solar screen installations run the length of the coast: E Screen 5% White/Linen on Sivoia QS at Turnberry Ocean Club in Sunny Isles Beach, T Screen 3% White at the Ritz-Carlton Residences in Sunny Isles, Basketweave 90 Bright White through an oceanfront mansion on Hillsboro Mile, Basketweave Pearl at the Ritz-Carlton Residences in Miami Beach, and Aura Parchment on fourteen Triathlon battery rollers in a Boca Raton home. Each page below links to the project that used it.

Good to Know

Solar screens: frequently asked

Which Lutron solar screen is best for an ocean view?

E Screen at 3% or 5% in a light or two-tone colour is the safe answer and the one we install most. For the clearest possible view in a dark fabric on hot glass, E Screen with KOOLBLACK. For a softer, textile look, T Screen; for warm interiors, M Screen or Aura.

Do solar screens give privacy at night?

No. With the lights on inside and dark outside, a solar screen of any openness silhouettes. Pair it with a blackout or a light-filtering shade on a dual Lutron roller, or a drapery, where night privacy matters.

Can the same fabric be ordered in different openness factors?

Yes, and it is how we handle a whole house: one colour throughout, tighter weaves on the hot elevations, more open ones on the shaded side. E Screen, Basketweave 27, Basketweave 90 and M Screen all offer three to five openness factors in the same colour.

Which solar screens are PVC-free?

Basketweave Eco2 (100% recycled TPO), Sheerweave 8000 (100% polyester, Cradle to Cradle) and, among the light-filtering weaves, GreenScreen Evolve and Ethos. The fiberglass and vinyl screens are not PVC-free.

Are Lutron solar screens fire rated?

Most are listed to NFPA 701 and CA Title 19, and several add CAN/ULC-S109, NFPA 101, ASTM E84 or European listings. The fire ratings Lutron publishes are shown on every design page and summarised on our commercial fabrics page.
