Phifer is the rare fabric company that still weaves in the town where it started. Its main manufacturing and specialty weaving facilities have been in Tuscaloosa, Alabama since 1952, and Phifer states that its products are made in the USA, with the majority of SheerWeave roller-shade fabrics woven there. When a client asks where the fabric comes from, that is an answer we can give without hedging.

Phifer's main manufacturing and specialty weaving facilities have been headquartered in Tuscaloosa since 1952, when J. Reese Phifer founded the company; the majority of SheerWeave roller-shade fabrics are woven there.
Microban and lead-free
Microban antimicrobial protection works continuously to inhibit bacteria, mold and mildew in the fabric itself, and the weaves are lead-free. On a Florida slider that fogs every morning, that is not a footnote.
PVC-free styles
SheerWeave Styles 7001 and 8000 are PVC-free; the other SheerWeave styles are vinyl-coated fiberglass, with DOW ECOLIBRIUM bio-based plasticizers in the Eco versions. Selected styles carry Cradle to Cradle Certified Bronze, and SheerWeave can contribute points on LEED projects.

Is SheerWeave PVC-free?
Styles 7001 and 8000 are PVC-free. The rest of the SheerWeave family is vinyl-coated fiberglass, with the Eco versions using DOW ECOLIBRIUM bio-based plasticizers, GREENGUARD certified and lead-free. Tell us if a no-vinyl specification is required and we will start from the 7000 and 8000 series.
SheerWeave or Mermet?
Both are certified, fiberglass-core mills weaving in the American South, and we stock both. Mermet E Screen with KOOLBLACK is our default on ocean-facing glass; SheerWeave brings the textured looks, Microban and the PVC-free styles. The real comparison is certified fabric against anonymous screen, not one mill against the other.
Can I get SheerWeave on a Somfy or manual shade?
Yes. We source Phifer directly and keep it in stock, so the same fabric is available on Lutron, Somfy, our Essential tier or a manual chain, cut and finished in our Fort Lauderdale workroom without waiting on a mill run.
