Four dark, low-reflectance colours for a terrace that never glares
SunTex 95 Matte at 5% and SunTex 97 Matte at 3% are the matte-finish version of Phifer's exterior roller fabric, in the same 28% polyester and 72% vinyl on polyester construction, 126 inches wide, at 15.1 and 16.0 oz per square yard and about 0.029 to 0.030 inches thick, with UV blockage of about 95% and 97%. Phifer lists a Microban antimicrobial additive, GREENGUARD Gold, RoHS and REACH compliance, California Technical Bulletin 117 and Class A ratings under NFPA 101 and IBC Section 803.1.1.
There are four colours and all of them are dark: Matte Niko, Matte Iron Grey, Matte Dark Bronze and Matte Black. The published figures tell you what the finish does. Solar reflectance across the card is 4% to 6% and absorptance 85% to 92%, which is lower reflectance than any other exterior fabric Phifer publishes, so the fabric itself throws almost no light back at the terrace. Visible transmission is 3% to 9% and solar heat gain coefficients are 0.12 to 0.17 behind single glazing and 0.09 to 0.12 behind insulating glass.

Tv = visible light transmitted, Ts = solar energy transmitted, Rs = solar energy reflected, As = solar energy absorbed, in percent, as published by Phifer for the fabric on its own. SHGC single = solar heat gain coefficient of the fabric behind single 1/4 in clear glass (1/8 in where that is what Phifer publishes), SHGC insul. = behind 1 in insulating glass with a high-performance coating (1/2 in clear where published). An outdoor kitchen, a covered terrace with a television, or a rooftop where the client sits looking out and does not want the shade fabric itself to become the bright object in their field of view. On a Miami Beach or Sunny Isles terrace facing the low afternoon sun, Matte Dark Bronze at 3% gives the clearest view out and the calmest surface to sit next to.

What does the matte finish actually change?
How much light the fabric bounces back at you. Across this card solar reflectance is 4% to 6%, against 76% for White in the standard SunTex range, so the shade reads as a dark, flat surface rather than a bright one. It also means the fabric absorbs 85% to 92% of the solar energy, which is fine outside the glass where the heat dissipates into the air.
Is it available in a light colour?
No. All four colourways are dark by design. For a pale exterior shade, SunTex 95/97/99 offers White, White/Grey, Stucco, Sand and Alpaca in the same construction and the same 126-inch width.
How wide can a Phifer SunTex 95/97 Matte shade be?
Phifer publishes standard roll widths of 126" (320 cm) for SunTex 95/97 Matte, so a single shade can run to about 126 inches wide before a seam or a second shade is needed. Wider openings are covered with two shades on one headrail programmed to move together, or with a seam placed where the mullion hides it. We confirm the exact limit for the chosen system when we measure.
