The exterior roller fabric: 1%, 3% and 5%, ten colours, 126 inches

SunTex 99 at 1%, SunTex 97 at 3% and SunTex 95 at 5% are Phifer's exterior roller shade fabrics: 28% polyester and 72% vinyl on polyester, woven 126 inches wide at 15.1 to 17.1 oz per square yard and about 0.029 to 0.033 inches thick, with UV blockage of 99%, 97% and 95%. Every colour carries a Microban antimicrobial additive, GREENGUARD Gold, RoHS and REACH compliance and the ANSI/WCMA A100.1 lead-content standard, with California Technical Bulletin 117 and Class A ratings under NFPA 101 and IBC Section 803.1.1.

The reason to hang a fabric outside the glass is in the solar heat gain figures. Across this card Phifer publishes SHGC of 0.09 to 0.17 behind single glazing and 0.06 to 0.12 behind insulating glass with a high-performance coating, measured with the fabric outside the window at a 30 degree profile angle. No interior screen comes close. Ten colours run from White through White/Grey, Stucco, Sand and Alpaca to Chestnut, Mocha, Carbon, Dark Bronze and Black, with visible transmission of 2% to 16% and solar reflectance from 3% at the dark end of the card to 76% in White.

Tv = visible light transmitted, Ts = solar energy transmitted, Rs = solar energy reflected, As = solar energy absorbed, in percent, as published by Phifer for the fabric on its own. SHGC single = solar heat gain coefficient of the fabric behind single 1/4 in clear glass (1/8 in where that is what Phifer publishes), SHGC insul. = behind 1 in insulating glass with a high-performance coating (1/2 in clear where published). Exterior SunTex and SunScreen figures are for the fabric installed outside the glass at a 30 degree profile angle. We bring the sample books to the consultation.

South Florida

Where SunTex 95/97/99 works here

This is what we put on a west-facing terrace, a pool deck or a lanai in Fort Lauderdale, Pompano Beach and Boca Raton, on a track-guided motorized roller so the fabric cannot lift in the wind. Dark Bronze and Carbon give the clearest view out and the least glare on the terrace; White keeps the fabric and the wall behind it coolest. At 126 inches wide a long terrace still comes out as a small number of shades rather than a row of narrow ones.

Good to Know

SunTex 95/97/99: frequently asked

Why is the solar heat gain figure so much lower than an interior screen?

Because the fabric is outside the glass. Stopping the sun before it reaches the window is far more effective than intercepting it afterwards, and Phifer measures these fabrics installed exterior at a 30 degree profile angle. SunTex 99 publishes 0.09 behind single glazing where the tightest interior SheerWeave publishes 0.17 or more.

Which openness for a terrace?

SunTex 97 at 3% is the usual answer on a South Florida terrace: the view holds and the heat is gone. SunTex 99 at 1% for a hard west exposure or where the terrace faces low afternoon sun, SunTex 95 at 5% where the space is already partly shaded.

Can it be left down in wind?

No. An exterior shade is retracted before weather, by hand or on a wind sensor, and it is not storm protection. We set the automation up that way at commissioning and say so plainly rather than let a fabric be asked to do a job it cannot.

How wide can a Phifer SunTex 95/97/99 shade be?

Phifer publishes standard roll widths of 126" (320 cm) for SunTex 95/97/99, so a single shade can run to about 126 inches wide before a seam or a second shade is needed. Wider openings are covered with two shades on one headrail programmed to move together, or with a seam placed where the mullion hides it. We confirm the exact limit for the chosen system when we measure.

Which shades can be made in SunTex 95/97/99?

SunTex 95/97/99 is a roller shade fabric. We source it directly from Phifer, so the same weave goes on Lutron, Somfy, Crestron or Vertilux motors or a manual chain, cut and finished in our Fort Lauderdale workroom and installed by our own team from Miami to Palm Beach.

Can I see SunTex 95/97/99 samples before ordering?

Yes. We keep the Phifer sample books in the Fort Lauderdale workroom (4539 Powerline Rd, by appointment) and the Miami Beach showroom (500 South Pointe Dr #150), and we bring the colours you shortlist to the in-home consultation so you can hold them against your glass in your own light.
