The fiberglass exterior weave, 25% open, in three colours
SunScreen is Phifer's fiberglass exterior fabric: 35% fiberglass and 65% vinyl on fiberglass at 25% openness, 8.5 oz per square yard and 0.021 inches thick, with UV blockage of about 75%. It comes in three colours, Charcoal, Silver Gray and Bronze, and the widths are specific: 36 to 84 inches across the range, 60 inches in Charcoal and Silver Gray only, and 72 and 96 inches in Charcoal only. It is listed to NFPA 101 Class A, IBC Section 803.1.1 Class A and CAN/ULC S-109.
At 25% open this is the most view-forward fabric in the exterior range. Phifer publishes visible transmission of 26% to 28%, solar transmission of 24% to 26%, solar reflectance of 5% to 14% and absorptance of 60% to 71%, with solar heat gain coefficients of 0.28 to 0.30 behind single glazing; no insulating-glass figure is published. Unlike every SunTex style, SunScreen carries no antimicrobial listing in Phifer's data, which is worth weighing in a climate where an exterior fabric stays wet for months.

Tv = visible light transmitted, Ts = solar energy transmitted, Rs = solar energy reflected, As = solar energy absorbed, in percent, as published by Phifer for the fabric on its own. SHGC single = solar heat gain coefficient of the fabric behind single 1/4 in clear glass (1/8 in where that is what Phifer publishes), SHGC insul. = behind 1 in insulating glass with a high-performance coating (1/2 in clear where published). Exterior SunTex and SunScreen figures are for the fabric installed outside the glass at a 30 degree profile angle. We bring the sample books to the consultation.
Where SunScreen works here
Window screens and porch panels where the point is keeping the view and the airflow while taking the edge off the sun, rather than shading a terrace properly. In South Florida we specify it on fixed screen openings rather than on roller shades, and for a west exposure we would step to SunTex 95 or 97, which stop several times more of the solar energy at the same window.
SunScreen: frequently asked
How much heat does it actually stop?
Less than the SunTex roller fabrics. SunScreen publishes solar transmission of 24% to 26% and a solar heat gain coefficient of 0.28 to 0.30 behind single glazing, where SunTex 99 publishes 0.09. It is a view and airflow fabric at 25% openness, not a heat barrier.
Which widths are available?
36 to 84 inches in all three colours, 60 inches in Charcoal and Silver Gray only, and 72 and 96 inches in Charcoal only. If the opening needs a width Charcoal is the only colour that carries, that usually settles the colour choice.
How wide can a Phifer SunScreen shade be?
Phifer publishes standard roll widths of 36" to 84" (91.4 cm to 213.4 cm); 60" (152.4 cm) in Charcoal and Silver Gray only; 72" and 96" (182.9 cm and 243.8 cm) in Charcoal only for SunScreen, so a single shade can run to about 84 inches wide before a seam or a second shade is needed. Wider openings are covered with two shades on one headrail programmed to move together, or with a seam placed where the mullion hides it. We confirm the exact limit for the chosen system when we measure.
Which shades can be made in SunScreen?
SunScreen is a roller shade fabric. We source it directly from Phifer, so the same weave goes on Lutron, Somfy, Crestron or Vertilux motors or a manual chain, cut and finished in our Fort Lauderdale workroom and installed by our own team from Miami to Palm Beach.
Can I see SunScreen samples before ordering?
Yes. We keep the Phifer sample books in the Fort Lauderdale workroom (4539 Powerline Rd, by appointment) and the Miami Beach showroom (500 South Pointe Dr #150), and we bring the colours you shortlist to the in-home consultation so you can hold them against your glass in your own light.
