The heavy-duty porch and patio screen, at 10% and 25%

SunTex 90 at 10% openness and SunTex 80 at 25% are the heavy exterior fabrics in the range: 31% polyester and 69% vinyl on polyester, at 16.5 and 12.9 oz per square yard and 0.035 and 0.032 inches thick, with UV blockage of about 90% and 75%. Widths run 36 to 96 inches, with 120 inches available in all colours except Grey on SunTex 90 and except Beige and Grey on SunTex 80. Six colours cover the range: Stucco, Beige, Grey, Brown, Dark Bronze and Black.

These are more open than the SunTex 95/97/99 roller fabrics, which changes what they are for. Published visible transmission runs 18% to 39% and solar transmission 12% to 31% across the two styles, so the view through them stays largely intact while a real share of the heat is stopped at the outside face. Solar heat gain coefficients run 0.17 to 0.31 behind single glazing. Phifer lists a Microban antimicrobial additive, GREENGUARD Gold, RoHS and REACH, California Technical Bulletin 117 and Class A ratings under NFPA 101 and IBC Section 803.1.1.

Tv = visible light transmitted, Ts = solar energy transmitted, Rs = solar energy reflected, As = solar energy absorbed, in percent, as published by Phifer for the fabric on its own. SHGC single = solar heat gain coefficient of the fabric behind single 1/4 in clear glass (1/8 in where that is what Phifer publishes), SHGC insul. = behind 1 in insulating glass with a high-performance coating (1/2 in clear where published). Exterior SunTex and SunScreen figures are for the fabric installed outside the glass at a 30 degree profile angle. We bring the sample books to the consultation.

South Florida

Where SunTex 80/90 works here

Screen enclosures, porch panels and patio walls rather than roller shades: the places in a South Florida house where the fabric is fixed in a frame and stays there. On a pool cage or a screened porch in Fort Lauderdale or Plantation, SunTex 90 in Dark Bronze cuts the afternoon heat without closing the space in. Where the same opening needs a shade that retracts, we go to SunTex 95 or 97 instead.

Good to Know

SunTex 80/90: frequently asked

SunTex 80 or SunTex 90?

SunTex 90 is 10% open and stops more heat; SunTex 80 is 25% open and keeps more air movement and more view. For a west-facing porch, 90. For a screened area where the point is airflow and insects rather than heat, 80.

Can these be used on a motorized roller shade?

They can be made up as shades, but the roller fabrics in the range are SunTex 95, 97 and 99, which are thinner, wider at 126 inches and published with much lower solar heat gain figures. For a retracting terrace shade we specify those; for a fixed panel or an enclosure, 80 or 90.

How wide can a Phifer SunTex 80/90 shade be?

Phifer publishes standard roll widths of 36" to 96" (91.4 cm to 243.8 cm); 120" (304.8 cm) in all colors except Grey.; 36" to 96" (91.4 cm to 243.8 cm); 120" (304.8 cm) in all colors except Beige and Grey. for SunTex 80/90, so a single shade can run to about 96 inches wide before a seam or a second shade is needed. Wider openings are covered with two shades on one headrail programmed to move together, or with a seam placed where the mullion hides it. We confirm the exact limit for the chosen system when we measure.

Which shades can be made in SunTex 80/90?

SunTex 80/90 is a roller shade fabric. We source it directly from Phifer, so the same weave goes on Lutron, Somfy, Crestron or Vertilux motors or a manual chain, cut and finished in our Fort Lauderdale workroom and installed by our own team from Miami to Palm Beach.

Can I see SunTex 80/90 samples before ordering?

Yes. We keep the Phifer sample books in the Fort Lauderdale workroom (4539 Powerline Rd, by appointment) and the Miami Beach showroom (500 South Pointe Dr #150), and we bring the colours you shortlist to the in-home consultation so you can hold them against your glass in your own light.
