No Vinyl

The fabrics with no vinyl in the published composition

Most shade screens are vinyl on fiberglass or vinyl on polyester, and for good reasons: the coating is what makes a weave dimensionally stable, cleanable and fire resistant. Some projects cannot have it, whether for a materials brief, a LEED or WELL submission, a clinic or a client who asks by name. This page collects the 175 Phifer colourways in 10 designs whose published composition contains no vinyl at all: SheerWeave 8000, Infinity2 and RE-USE among the solar screens, and the polyester blackouts and light-filtering twins of the 7000 series. SheerWeave 7001 is the one style Phifer labels PVC-Free in the composition itself.

They divide into three material stories. SheerWeave 8000 is 100% polyester, Cradle to Cradle Certified Bronze, at 3% openness and 118 inches wide, the lightest solar screen in the library at 7.35 oz per square yard. Infinity2 is 100% TPO, a thermoplastic olefin yarn with a TPO coating, in nine warm neutrals at 1%, 3% and 5%. RE-USE is 85% REPREVE recycled polyester with 15% virgin polyester, in eight colours at the same three openness factors, 118 inches wide. The blackouts and light-filtering fabrics of the 7000 series are polyester with acrylic coatings and acrylic foamed backings.

How To Choose

What each one is actually made of

SheerWeave 8000

100% polyester, 3% openness, 118 inches, 7.35 oz. Cradle to Cradle Certified Bronze and GREENGUARD Gold, with a broad fire listing including NFPA 701 TM#1 and TM#2, California Title 19, BFD IX-1 and CAN/ULC-S 109. Phifer asks for ultrasonic or heat cutting and does not recommend railroading it.

SheerWeave Infinity2

100% TPO: 20% TPO fiber yarn with an 80% TPO coating, at 1%, 3% and 5% openness in Cotton, Almond, Wheat, Stone, Barley, Nickel, Slate, Bark and Midnight. Widths 63 and 98 inches. Class A under NFPA 101 and IBC 803.1.1 with an NFPA 701 TM#1 listing.

SheerWeave RE-USE

85% REPREVE recycled polyester and 15% virgin polyester, at 1%, 3% and 5%, 118 inches wide, in eight colours including the two-tone White/Linen and White/Pearl and the dark Black/Bronze and Black/Grey. NFPA 701 TM#1 and TM#2, California Title 19 and BFD IX-1.

The 7000 series

SheerWeave 7001 (100% polyester with an acrylic flocked backing, the style Phifer labels PVC-Free), 7200R and 7250R, 7300 and 7350, 7400 and 7450R, 7500 and 7500R, 7700R and 7750R, 7800 and 7850. Polyester faces with acrylic coatings or acrylic foamed backings, all but 7001 woven 118 inches wide.

In Detail

What is not on this page, and why

SheerWeave 7100 is a blackout but it is laminated with a two-ply 100% PVC film, so it does not belong here. The 4000 Eco family and SheerWeave Privacy are the interesting near-misses: they are vinyl on polyester, made with DOW ECOLIBRIUM bio-based plasticizer, and Phifer publishes that over half of the compound comes from crop-based feed stocks and minerals and over two thirds from non fossil fuel based materials. If the brief is a lower-impact vinyl rather than no vinyl, those are the fabrics to look at, and 4000 Eco is the heavier, better-hanging screen of the whole library.

One trade-off is worth stating plainly. The vinyl-coated fiberglass screens carry the widest fire listings and the widest rolls, up to 126 inches. The vinyl-free fabrics top out at 118 inches, Infinity2 at 98, and none of them is recommended for railroading. On a wide slider that can mean two shades where a fiberglass screen would have been one, so the material decision and the window schedule need to be made together rather than in sequence.

Our Projects

PVC-free on our installations

These are the fabrics we bring out when a client asks the material question first: a wellness-minded new build in Miami, a pediatric or clinical space, a designer working to a LEED or WELL brief, or simply a homeowner who does not want vinyl at the window. RE-USE and Infinity2 both give a warm, textile-looking neutral card rather than the technical grey of a fiberglass screen, which usually settles the aesthetic question at the same time.

Good to Know

PVC-free: frequently asked

Which Phifer fabric is actually labelled PVC-free?

SheerWeave 7001. Phifer publishes its composition as 100% polyester with an acrylic flocked backing and marks it PVC-Free. The other fabrics on this page publish compositions with no vinyl in them (100% polyester, 100% TPO, recycled polyester, polyester with acrylic coatings), which is the same practical outcome stated a different way.

Is a vinyl-free screen as durable?

For an interior roller shade in a house, yes, with two caveats worth knowing before you specify: Phifer asks for ultrasonic or heat-generated cutting on SheerWeave 8000, and none of these fabrics is recommended for railroading. Exterior fabrics are a different question entirely and all of the SunTex range is vinyl on polyester.

Which of these has recycled content?

SheerWeave RE-USE, at 85% REPREVE recycled polyester with 15% virgin polyester. SheerWeave 8000 is Cradle to Cradle Certified Bronze, which speaks to material health and recyclability rather than recycled input. Infinity2 is 100% TPO.

Can I get a vinyl-free blackout?

Yes. Every 7000 series blackout except 7100 publishes a polyester composition with acrylic coatings or backings and no vinyl: 7001, 7200R, 7300, 7400, 7500, 7500R, 7700R and 7800. See the blackout page for widths and fire listings.

Do these fabrics still meet fire codes?

Most do. SheerWeave 8000 carries one of the broadest fire listings in the library, RE-USE and Infinity2 list NFPA 701 TM#1, and among the blackouts 7001, 7400 and 7500 carry NFPA 701 with Class A ratings. SheerWeave 7200R, 7500R and 7700R carry no NFPA 701 listing at all, so for a commercial specification we check the listing before the colour.
