A twill weave with a two-sided face, in four colours

Styles 4650 at 3% and 4550 at 5% are woven as a twill from thin vinyl-coated polyester yarns, 17% polyester and 83% vinyl on polyester, which gives the fabric a diagonal grain and a different appearance on each side. They are the lighter members of the polyester group at 13.3 and 13.0 oz per square yard and 0.026 and 0.025 inches thick, and they come in two widths only, 63 and 98 inches. Phifer publishes UV blockage of about 97% and 95% and acoustic values of NRC 0.10 and 0.15.

There are four colours: Linen, Granite, Chestnut and Coal. What is unusual is how little the numbers move across them. Visible transmission runs 7% to 11% and solar reflectance 47% to 59%, so even the dark Coal reflects 47% of the solar energy that hits it, where a dark yarn in a single-sided weave would reflect single digits. That is the twill construction doing its job: a dark face for view clarity with a reflective back working behind it. Microban, GREENGUARD Gold, RoHS and REACH and a full fire set are all listed.

Tv = visible light transmitted, Ts = solar energy transmitted, Rs = solar energy reflected, As = solar energy absorbed, in percent, as published by Phifer for the fabric on its own. SHGC single = solar heat gain coefficient of the fabric behind single 1/4 in clear glass (1/8 in where that is what Phifer publishes), SHGC insul. = behind 1 in insulating glass with a high-performance coating (1/2 in clear where published). Exterior SunTex and SunScreen figures are for the fabric installed outside the glass at a 30 degree profile angle. We bring the sample books to the consultation.

South Florida

Where SheerWeave 4550/4650 works here

A dark, clear-view screen that still reflects heat is a useful thing on South Florida glass, and Coal at 3% is the colourway that delivers it here. The limit is width: at 98 inches this fabric will not cover a wide slider in one piece, so we tend to specify it on standard windows and use the 126-inch cards for the big openings.

The two-sided twill version of SheerWeave 4500/4600: fewer colours and a narrower roll, but a dark face that still reflects heat.

Good to Know

SheerWeave 4550/4650: frequently asked

Why does the dark colour still reflect heat?

Because the two sides of the twill are different. Phifer publishes 47% solar reflectance for Coal, against 3% for a comparable dark colour in a single-sided polyester weave, so you keep the view clarity of a dark face without handing all of the heat to the fabric.

How wide can one shade be?

98 inches. That is the limit for both styles, so wide sliders take two shades on a shared headrail. For a single shade over a wide opening in a similar palette, the 4500/4600 card goes to 126 inches.

How wide can a Phifer SheerWeave 4550/4650 shade be?

Phifer publishes standard roll widths of 63" and 98" (160.0 cm and 248.9 cm) for SheerWeave 4550/4650, so a single shade can run to about 98 inches wide before a seam or a second shade is needed. Wider openings are covered with two shades on one headrail programmed to move together, or with a seam placed where the mullion hides it. We confirm the exact limit for the chosen system when we measure.

Which shades can be made in SheerWeave 4550/4650?

SheerWeave 4550/4650 is made up as roller shades, roman shades and panel tracks. We source it directly from Phifer, so the same weave goes on Lutron, Somfy, Crestron or Vertilux motors or a manual chain, cut and finished in our Fort Lauderdale workroom and installed by our own team from Miami to Palm Beach.

Can I see SheerWeave 4550/4650 samples before ordering?
