Lutron Light-Filtering Shade Fabrics
157 colourways in 21 designs: daytime privacy, soft daylight, and a fabric you would choose for its own sake.
Privacy by day, glow instead of glare
A light-filtering roller fabric is dense enough that nothing can be seen through it from either side by day, and open enough (Lutron rates them from under 1% to over 10% openness) that the room stays bright and the fabric glows with the light behind it. It is the fabric for a room that does not need the view but does need the daylight: bedrooms, baths, street-facing living rooms, studies. Lutron's library has 157 colourways of it in 21 designs, and most of the designer ones come with a blackout twin in the identical colour, so a bedroom can carry the same fabric day and night on a dual roller.
The designs fall into three groups. The Atelier Collection (Bouclé, Roseau, Satine, Matrice, Pochoir, Stria, Tela) are textured, PVC-free polyester textiles at the top of Lutron's price scale. The Gallery neutrals (Luna, Mosaic, Mirage, Stratus, Harbor, Palette, Vista, Tre) are simpler weaves in coordinated colour cards. And a group of specification fabrics (GreenScreen Evolve with 67% recycled content, Loop in recycled PET, Bistre in Trevira CS, Monomer) answer materials briefs and fire codes.

Reading the openness on a light-filtering fabric
Under 1% to under 2%
Dense and private: Luna, Mirage, Harbor, Palette, Satine, Pochoir, Mosaic, Loop. The room glows; the shade reads as a soft wall of light. Dark colours in this group approach room-darkening on their own.
Under 3% to under 6%
Brighter with a hint of texture in the light: Bouclé, Stria, Vista, Stratus, Matrice, Roseau, Tela, Tre Light Filtering, GreenScreen Evolve. Still private by day.
Over 10%
Sheer-like: Bistre, Monomer, Tre Sheer. Soft light and a veiled view; not a privacy fabric.
Where each group works in a South Florida home
Atelier fabrics go where the shade is on show: the living room of a designer-led Miami Beach or Palm Beach project, exposed Palladiom rollers, a primary suite with its blackout twin behind it. Gallery neutrals cover the rest of a house at a friendlier price and in coordinated cards, which is how a whole condo gets done in one fabric family. The specification fabrics go into offices, clinics and schools, and into homes with a LEED or WELL brief.
Night privacy is the one thing a light-filtering fabric does not fully give: with the lights on inside, a pale fabric silhouettes. Dark colours (Roseau Jet or Armour, Harbor Anchor, Luna Anthracite) largely solve it; otherwise the blackout twin does.

Light-filtering on our Lutron installations
Our workroom in Fort Lauderdale makes up every one of these on Lutron Sivoia QS, Palladiom and Triathlon rollers, and we order the Atelier and Gallery samples you shortlist for the consultation. The most common request from Fort Lauderdale to Boca Raton is a pale, textured light-filtering fabric in the living areas with the matching blackout in the bedrooms, all in one colour.
Light-filtering: frequently asked
What is the difference between light-filtering and a solar screen?
A solar screen is see-through, chosen for the view and for glare; a light-filtering fabric is not see-through, chosen for privacy and soft light. Many rooms use both: screen on the water side, light-filtering on the street side.
Is a light-filtering shade private at night?
By day, fully. At night a lit room shows shapes through a pale fabric. Choose a dark colour or add the blackout twin where that matters, which is why most designs here come in matched pairs.
Which light-filtering fabrics are the widest?
Roseau, Tela, Mosaic, Stratus, Vista, Bistre, Tre Light Filtering and GreenScreen Evolve are 116 inches; Stratus, Bistre, Loop and Monomer are also railroadable. The Atelier fabrics other than Roseau and Tela are 108 inches.
Which are PVC-free?
All of the Atelier and Gallery light-filtering fabrics on this page, plus GreenScreen Evolve, Loop, Bistre and Monomer, are listed by Lutron as PVC-free. The vinyl solar screens are on a separate page.
