The shade that insulates, on batteries
A honeycomb (cellular) shade traps air in a row of fabric cells, which is why it is the one window treatment with a published R-value. Lutron's honeycomb fabrics run from R 2.8 to R 4.4 and come in two collections: the Architectural Honeycomb Collection (Kyoto, Madrid, Oslo), 100% polyester, PVC-free, with light-filtering and true blackout versions; and the Honeycomb Essentials Collection (Rio, Monaco, Cyprus, Napa), white-backed neutrals and colours in single-cell, double-cell and room-darkening constructions. All are 96 inches wide, cleaned by vacuuming, and run on Lutron Triathlon battery honeycomb shades or wired Sivoia.
Because Triathlon honeycombs are battery powered and need no wiring, they are the shade we install most in existing condos and in rooms where the goal is a cooler room and a lower electric bill rather than a view.

Cell and opacity, decoded
Single-cell light-filtering
One row of cells, soft glow, privacy by day. R 3.5 (Rio, Monaco, Cyprus), 3.8 (Kyoto, Madrid), 2.8 (Oslo), 3.4 (Napa).
Double-cell light-filtering
Two rows of smaller cells: a little more insulation (R 3.6 in Rio and Monaco) and a slightly more opaque look. Rio and Monaco only.
Room-darkening
An opaque cell face that blocks light through the fabric; a little light can enter at the shade's edges. R 4.3 in Rio, Monaco and Cyprus.
Blackout
Kyoto Blackout and Madrid Blackout: fully opaque architectural honeycombs at R 4.4, the highest insulation value in the library.
Where honeycombs make sense in South Florida
West-facing bedrooms, converted lanais, home offices that run hot, older houses with thin glass, and any room where the afternoon sun is a heating problem rather than a glare problem. A honeycomb on a Triathlon battery motor drops in without an electrician, which is why it suits a condo retrofit. On a wall of glass with a view we still recommend a solar screen; a honeycomb hides the view when it is down.

Which Lutron honeycomb has the best insulation?
Kyoto Blackout and Madrid Blackout at a published R-value of 4.4, then the room-darkening Essentials (Rio, Monaco, Cyprus) at 4.3. Light-filtering versions run 2.8 to 3.8.
Single-cell or double-cell?
Double-cell adds a small insulation gain and a more opaque face; single-cell is lighter, stacks smaller and comes in more colours and in room-darkening. For most South Florida rooms single-cell is enough.
Are Lutron honeycomb shades battery powered?
On Triathlon, yes: no wiring, years between battery changes according to Lutron, control from a Pico remote, keypad or the app. Wired Sivoia honeycombs are used in new construction.
How wide can a honeycomb shade be?
Lutron lists 96 inches for every honeycomb fabric. Wider openings are covered with two shades on one headrail, programmed to move together.
Are they PVC-free?
Yes. Every honeycomb fabric in Lutron's library is listed as PVC-free.
