Blackout

Total darkness, in the fabric the room deserves

A blackout roller fabric passes no light through the material: Lutron publishes 0% visible transmission for every colourway on this page. What differs between the 23 designs is everything else: whether the face is a designer textile with a matching light-filtering twin (Bouclé, Roseau, Satine, Matrice, Pochoir, Stria, Tela, Luna, Mosaic, Mirage, Stratus, Harbor, Palette, Tre, Ethos), a single-purpose blackout in a wide colour card (Encore, Element, Hue, Verso, Highland), a vinyl blackout that matches a solar screen (Blackout Screen), or a fiberglass blackout that can also go on a tensioned skylight shade (Premiere, Standard).

Width matters more for blackouts than for any other fabric, because a seam in a blackout shows as a line of light. The widest here run to 116 inches (Roseau, Tela, Mosaic, Stratus, Highland, Encore, Ethos Blackout, Blackout Screen); the narrowest, Standard, to 70. Railroadable blackouts (Encore, Element, Hue, Verso, Luna Blackout, Blackout Screen, Premiere, Standard) can be turned to cover a wider opening in one piece. Back colour is the other decision: white for a neutral facade, grey (Highland, Element Facade, Ethos Blackout) for tinted glass, or a colour that matches the face (Verso, Palette Blackout).

How To Choose

How dark is dark: the three things that decide it

The fabric

Every fabric on this page blocks light through the material. That is the easy part.

The edges

A roller shade inside a window frame leaves a light gap of roughly half an inch on each side. Side channels close it; an outside mount that overlaps the opening reduces it. For a bedroom that must be truly dark we specify channels.

The layer in front

In a dual roller, the blackout sits behind a solar screen or a light-filtering shade in a matching colour, so the room has a daytime setting and a night setting on one bracket. Most of the designer blackouts here exist precisely to match their light-filtering twin.

In Detail

Which blackout for which room

Primary bedrooms in our Lutron projects usually pair a solar screen with a blackout in the same opening: Luna behind Basketweave 90 on Hillsboro Mile, Highland behind T Screen at the Ritz-Carlton Residences in Sunny Isles Beach. A designer bedroom with a soft, upholstered look takes an Atelier pair (Bouclé, Satine or Roseau with its blackout). A media room wants a dark face and, ideally, a dark back: Palette Blackout in Black, Hue in Black, or Verso in Coal. Hotel rooms and anything with a fire specification go to Encore, Luna Blackout FR, Mosaic Blackout, Tela Blackout, Element or Ethos Blackout.

Bathrooms and lanai-facing rooms in a humid climate should take a vinyl or fiberglass blackout (Blackout Screen, Premiere, Standard) rather than a polyester designer fabric.

Our Projects

Blackout on our Lutron installations

The Lutron blackouts we have installed along the coast run on side channels in oceanfront bedrooms in Sunny Isles Beach and Hillsboro Beach, behind screens in Fort Lauderdale estates, and alone in Boca Raton and Delray Beach bedrooms where a battery Triathlon roller was the whole treatment. The case studies linked from the design pages show the combinations.

Good to Know

Blackout: frequently asked

Does a blackout roller shade make the room completely dark?

The fabric does; the edges are the question. A blackout in side channels, or an outside mount that overlaps the frame, gets a bedroom to sleep-dark. A standard inside mount leaves a thin line of light at each side, which some clients accept and others do not. We show both.

Can I get a blackout that matches my solar screen?

Yes. Blackout Screen is made in the same two-tone charcoal and pearl language as the E Screen and T Screen ranges; Encore and Element come in enough neutrals to match any screen; and every Atelier and Gallery light-filtering fabric has a blackout twin in the identical colour.

Which Lutron blackout fabrics are fire rated?

Encore (NFPA 701, NFPA 101, CA Title 19, CAN/ULC-S109), Luna Blackout FR, Mosaic Blackout, Tela Blackout, Element and Element Facade, Ethos Blackout, Blackout Screen, Premiere and Standard all carry an NFPA 701 listing in Lutron's data. The Atelier and most Gallery blackouts do not list a domestic fire rating.

Can a blackout go on a skylight?

Premiere and Standard are the two blackouts Lutron offers on tensioned shades, which is how a skylight or sloped window is covered. See our skylight fabrics page.

Is a honeycomb blackout better than a roller blackout?

It insulates better (published R-values of 4.3 to 4.4 for Madrid, Kyoto and the room-darkening Essentials) and gives a softer look; a roller blackout is thinner, wider and pairs with a solar screen on one bracket. For a hot bedroom a honeycomb; for a view bedroom a dual roller.
