Lutron lighting control, from Caséta to HomeWorks, with the shades on the same keypad
A room is not finished when the shades are right; it is finished when the light is. Lutron makes the lighting control that the shading already lives on: dimmers and keypads, Ketra tunable light, a thermostat, and four systems that form a ladder, Caséta for a condo or a few rooms, RA2 Select and RadioRA 3 for a renovation, HomeWorks QSX for an estate, myRoom for a hotel or a villa. One keypad press, Morning, raises the shades and warms the lamps; Goodnight drops the blackouts and dims the house. The same Lutron processor runs both, and it plugs into Crestron, Control4, Savant and the voice assistants.
How the work is split: our partner Adom Smart Home designs, installs and programs the lighting, the dimmers, the keypads and the processor; we design, build, install and commission the shades and the drapery on that system, and coordinate the two so the scenes are written once. On an estate the lighting and the glass are one choreography; on a single battery shade with a Pico there is no system at all, and we say so.

Every rung speaks Clear Connect, Lutron's own radio at 434 MHz in a band Lutron calls essentially silent, with a 2.4 GHz Type X radio for Ketra and dense lighting on RadioRA 3 and HomeWorks, so a Pico bought for one Serena shade still works when the house moves up to a processor. What changes with the rung is who holds the programming: the owner in the Caséta app, the dealer in Lutron Designer from RA2 Select up. Lutron releases Designer only after its qualification training, which is why RadioRA 3 and HomeWorks are sold and programmed by dealers; Adom carries the lighting file, we carry the shade groups and limits in the same software, and the owner runs scenes and schedules in the Lutron app.
Caséta is where most South Florida houses start and where a surprising number can stop: dimmers at the switches, a few Picos, the Smart Bridge Pro, and Triathlon shades in the same app and the same voice assistants. The step to RadioRA 3 is the step to keypads on the wall, a timeclock, an integrator's drivers and two hundred devices; the step to HomeWorks is sixteen processors and ten thousand zones, Ketra, the Palladiom thermostat and the exterior shades on the same keypads, which is the Fort Lauderdale estate. The reason to put the shades on the lighting system is the keypad by the door.

Sheers open, lamps warm
One press at the bedside: the sheers travel, the blackout rises, the lamps come up low. At the Ritz-Carlton Residences Miami Beach that is the Morning scene on two Sivoia QS tracks per opening, native to the residence's Lutron system, with no second app or hub.
Entertain
The whole floor at once
Shades to the view line, pendants to dinner, the terrace lit. On Hillsboro Mile one press on a HomeWorks QS keypad moves fourteen walls of glass in Basketweave 90 Bright White, every bottom bar within 1/8 in of the next, while the lighting follows.
Goodnight
Blackouts down, house off
Luna blackouts drop in the bedrooms, the rest of the house dims and locks into its night state. In the six villas on Big Ambergris Cay, scene, fan and shade buttons sit on one engraved plate per room on myRoom XR, hard-wired, with nothing to pair.
Away and astronomic
The clock and the sun
Shades close against the west glass at four, open at sunrise, drop at noon in July when nobody is home. RadioRA 3 and HomeWorks carry astronomic timeclocks; Caséta schedules the same from the app. The sun side of the equation is on which treatments block heat.
Two technical details make the scenes feel right. Shade groups are built in Lutron Designer so a wall starts and stops together, with Intelligent Hembar Alignment holding the line; and the keypad engraving says what the button does. Where the house already runs Crestron, Control4 or Savant, the Lutron processor pairs into it and the scenes are mapped to the house keypads by the integrator: Crestron Home has paired natively with HomeWorks QS and QSX, RadioRA 2 and RA2 Select since May 2020 and with RadioRA 3 since its launch, and Lutron's RadioRA 3 list covers Control4, Savant, URC, RTI, Elan, Kaleidescape and AMX. The Ritz-Carlton Residences Sunny Isles runs that way, HomeWorks QS inside a Crestron house, shades, lighting and AV on the same keypads. Lutron against Crestron as a system is on Lutron vs Crestron.
Keypads, Picos and the thermostat #
The interface is where automation succeeds or fails, and Lutron makes one for each rung.
Pico remotes work on any rung, on a coin cell, with no wiring. Sunnata keypads carry RadioRA 3; seeTouch and GRAFIK T the older RadioRA 2 and HomeWorks QS systems; Palladiom keypads, in metal and glass finishes matched to the Palladiom shades, and Alisse keypads sit on HomeWorks, beside the Palladiom thermostat in the same architecture. A keypad replaces a bank of switches with labelled scenes, and the engraving is written with the client before it is ordered. Ketra is the top of the lighting side: full-spectrum tunable light that follows the sun through the day, on HomeWorks through the Clear Connect Gateway Type X. With the shades managing the daylight and Ketra managing the electric light, the room reads the same at four in the afternoon as at nine in the morning. Adom engineers it; see Ketra lighting.

Designs the lighting control, supplies and installs the dimmers, keypads, processors and Ketra, writes the lighting scenes and the integration to Crestron, Control4 or Savant where the house has one. On the Boca Raton home the Lutron system was supplied and programmed with Adom.
The glass
Exotic Shades & Draperies
Measures, specifies and builds the shades and the drapery, pre-wires and addresses every drive with the electrician before the drywall, installs with our own crew, commissions the shade groups, limits and presets in Lutron Designer, and hands the integrator a documented motor list. We service Lutron shades installed by others.

How the Lutron figures are built. Lutron's list price (MSRP) on E Screen 3%, installed and programmed, before tax, with a Pico remote per opening, the Smart Hub Pro (Triathlon) or the RadioRA 3 processor and a power supply per shade (Sivoia QS), the first set of D batteries and 4% delivery. Wired Somfy carries a 24 V power supply per shade; the same 72 by 84 in shade on a Somfy WireFree battery motor is about $933, and the whole main level about $8,287. We sell Lutron at Lutron's list price with installation and programming included and publish it; on a whole project that is about a quarter to a third above Somfy WireFree, or roughly 1.5 to 2 times wired Somfy. The Sivoia QS column already carries the RadioRA 3 processor (about $549 at Lutron list) that a lighting system would share, and the Triathlon column the Caséta Smart Bridge Pro (about $180); keypads are quoted per room with the engraving. Dimmers, switches, Ketra and the lighting programming are Adom's quote, written on the same floor plan, so the two can be read on one basis. Lighting control, asked and answered
Do I need to rewire my home for Lutron lighting control? #
No. Caséta, RA2 Select and RadioRA 3 are wireless systems on Lutron's Clear Connect radio: dimmers replace the switches in the existing boxes, keypads mount where switches were or on any wall, Pico remotes mount anywhere with no wire at all. HomeWorks adds wired keypads and panels for an estate and is planned before the drywall. The shades follow the same logic: Triathlon on batteries where the walls are closed, Sivoia QS on one low-voltage run per shade where they are open. Battery against wired: shade motors compared.
What is a lighting scene? #
One button that sets many lights and shades at once: Morning, Entertain, Away, Goodnight. In Caséta the owner builds scenes in the Lutron app; on RadioRA 3 and HomeWorks the dealer builds them in Lutron Designer and the owner edits them in the app; the astronomic timeclock runs them by the sun. At the Ritz-Carlton Residences Miami Beach, Good night closes the bedrooms and Morning opens the sheers.
Which Lutron system does my house need? #
Caséta for a condo or a few rooms, set up by the owner, with Serena or Triathlon shades on the hub; RA2 Select or RadioRA 3 for a renovation with keypads on the wall, up to 200 Lutron devices per RadioRA 3 processor, programmed by a dealer; HomeWorks QSX for an estate, up to sixteen processors and gateways, 10,000 zones, Ketra and the Palladiom thermostat; myRoom for a hotel or a villa. Can the shades and the lights share one keypad? #
Yes, when the shades are Lutron on the same system: the keypad buttons are scenes that address both. Sivoia QS, Triathlon and Palladiom shades are native to RadioRA 3 and HomeWorks, and Serena and Triathlon to Caséta. Shades of another brand reach a Lutron keypad through an integrator's interface, as the Somfy motors at Landmark Ranch Estates do, with a Lutron keypad in every room. Read Pico and keypads.
What makes Ketra different? #
Ketra is Lutron's full-spectrum tunable light: the colour and intensity of the electric light follow the sun through the day, so a room reads the same at dusk as at noon. It runs on HomeWorks through the Clear Connect Gateway Type X, up to 200 Ketra devices per gateway. Who installs and programs the lighting? #
Our partner Adom Smart Home, Pompano Beach, designs, installs and programs the lighting control, the dimmers, keypads, processors and Ketra. We design, build, install and commission the shades and the drapery on the same Lutron system, hand the integrator a documented motor list, and coordinate the two so the scenes are written once. Yes. Crestron Home has paired natively with HomeWorks QS and QSX, RadioRA 2 and RA2 Select since May 2020, and with RadioRA 3 since its launch: the two processors sit on the same network switch and Crestron imports the Lutron lights, shades and keypads. Lutron's RadioRA 3 integration list covers Control4, Savant, URC, RTI, Elan, Kaleidescape and AMX. Many of the largest houses we work in run Crestron on top with Lutron HomeWorks underneath for the lights and the shades; the Ritz-Carlton Residences Sunny Isles is built that way. Can I start with Caséta and grow into RadioRA 3 or HomeWorks? #
The Picos and the radio carry over, and so do Triathlon shades, which are listed for Caséta (with the Smart Bridge Pro), RA2 Select, RadioRA 3 and HomeWorks; a Serena shade is listed for Caséta and Pico only. The processor and the programming change rungs with you: a Caséta house that grows into RadioRA 3 is re-programmed by the dealer in Lutron Designer, and its dimmers may be replaced to match.
