Digital QMT Motors

What are the Crestron battery-powered shades?

Crestron's battery-powered shade (CS-SHADE-ROLLER-BATT) is the QMT3 Digital QMT motor in an SG wireless version, the CSM-QMTDC-163-1-SG, running on 8 D cell batteries with an average life Crestron puts at three years on two open-close cycles a day, for shades 25.44 to 96 inches wide.

The motor talks to the system over SG wireless, a 915 MHz two-way link with a range of about 230 ft indoors, through the CEN-GW1 gateway; nothing runs to the window but the shade itself. It keeps the QMT motor's setup buttons, status LED and obstruction detection, and mounts in the same QMT3 Architectural or Decor hardware as the wired motors, so a battery shade and a wired shade in the same room look identical. Crestron notes that high temperatures and shades taller than 60 inches shorten the battery life, and that a shade with blackout side channels starts at 29 inches wide. The batteries are not supplied with the shade; the CSMI-QMTDC-163-1-SG is the international version.

What It Costs

What Crestron's own guide says a shade costs

Crestron sells no motor or bracket on its own: the price is the finished shade, and Crestron publishes only a budgetary guide for it. This is that guide, unchanged.

Crestron Shades Budgetary Estimation Guide, June 2022: one motorized 5 Series roller shade, motor included, MSRP in US dollars
Shade sizeTier 1Tier 2Tier 3Tier 4
3 ft wide x 5 ft high$900$1,000$1,200$1,400
5 ft wide x 10 ft high$1,100$1,300$1,600$2,200
10 ft wide x 10 ft high$1,400$1,600$2,000$3,200

Options in the same guide: fascia $20 per ft; top and back cover $20 per ft; pocket $50 per ft; dual shade (two fabrics, one bracket) double the single-shade figure. The guide names example fabrics per tier: Tier 1: Bella, Mika, Merinda, Nava; Tier 2: E Screen, SheerWeave 2500, 2700 and 7500, Perla, Dilanna; Tier 3: SheerWeave 7000, Rachel, Nohea, Cosima; Tier 4: Flocke, Vizela, Harika; a few have changed tier since, and every fabric page gives the tier the Crestron fabric shop lists today. The guide excludes control processors, keypads, interfaces, wiring, power supplies, programming and installation. Source (PDF).

Figures are Crestron's own budgetary MSRP guide of June 2022 for one motorized 5 Series roller shade, motor included, before options. They exclude the control system, wiring, power, programming and installation, and Crestron may have changed them since. We quote every project at the measure.

Where the battery-powered shades fit

Battery is the answer for a finished condo in Miami Beach or Aventura that already runs on Crestron and wants a bedroom shade added without opening a wall, or for the one window in a renovation the electrician never reached. It is not the answer for a 12 ft living-room wall or a heavy blackout on a 9 ft opening: those want a wired QMT5, and our battery vs wired guide explains where the line falls. Where the home's system is not Crestron, compare the Lutron Triathlon and Somfy WireFree battery motors.

Good to Know

Crestron battery-powered shades: frequently asked

How long do the batteries last in a Crestron battery shade?

Crestron's figure is a three-year average on 8 D cell batteries at two open-close cycles a day, and it warns that heat and shades taller than 60 inches reduce it. A shade that runs four times a day in a sun-baked room will need fresh cells sooner. The cells are standard D batteries, changed at the shade without tools.

Does the battery shade need any wiring at all?

No. The CSM-QMTDC-163-1-SG communicates over SG wireless to a CEN-GW1 gateway that sits on the Crestron network, so the window needs neither power nor a data cable. The gateway is one device per home, sold separately.

Can a battery shade join the same scenes as the wired shades?

Yes. Through the CEN-GW1 gateway the battery motor is a Crestron device like the wired QMT motors, so it belongs to the same rooms, scenes, keypads and Crestron Home app as everything else; your integrator programs it the same way.

How much does a Crestron shade with the battery-powered shades cost?

Crestron publishes no prices for its motors or hardware; the motor ships inside a complete shade. Its budgetary guide of June 2022 lists one motorized 5 Series roller shade at $900 to $3,200 MSRP depending on size and fabric tier, before options, control, wiring and installation. We quote every project at the measure, with the fabric, the hardware and the commissioning on one number.

Do you install Crestron shades without a Crestron integrator?

We measure and specify the shades, Crestron builds them to order, our workroom sews the drapery for the track, and we install everything and commission it with the home's integrator, who owns the processor programming. On a project without an integrator we bring one in or propose Lutron or Somfy, which we program ourselves.
