Crestron shade power supplies: the 24 V DC supplies that feed the QMT motors
Crestron shade power supplies: every current model, Crestron's specifications and documents, and what the shade costs in Crestron's own budget guide.
What are the Crestron shade power supplies?
Every wired Crestron Digital QMT motor runs on 24 V DC from a Crestron power supply, one home run per motor: the CSA-PWS40 wall pack for a single motor, the plenum-rated CSA-PWS2S-JBOX-ZUMLINK-CN in a 4 x 4 junction box for two, and the CSA-PWS10S-HUB-ENET for up to ten motors with a built-in Cresnet hub and an Ethernet to Cresnet bridge.
The CSA-PWS40 is a 40 W, 24 V DC regulated pack that plugs into an outlet and feeds one roller shade or drapery motor through an 8 ft cable; the CSAI-PWS40 is its international version. The CSA-PWS2S-JBOX-ZUMLINK-CN gives 100 W in total, 50 W per output, for two motors or a motor and Cresnet devices, with Zum Link ports for Crestron's Zum lighting, and is UL 2043 rated for air-handling spaces. The CSA-PWS10S-HUB-ENET is the equipment-closet piece: ten outputs at 60 W each, 250 W continuous, a self-resetting fuse on every output, five Cresnet hub segments, an Ethernet port so the whole bank talks to the processor over the network, master up and down buttons for testing, and a case that fits Crestron's CAEN enclosures. The CSA-PWS-TBLOCK-2 and -3 (and the CSAI versions) are the replacement inline terminal blocks for the motor leads. Crestron's Cresnet run limit is about 130 ft standard and 500 ft on Cresnet HP, which decides where the supplies live.

Where the power supplies fit
In a South Florida condo the supplies sit in the AV closet or a media cabinet, one PWS10S for every ten shades and drapery tracks, with a home run of 4-conductor Cresnet to each window pulled before the drywall. That home-run rule, no daisy chains, is the one thing to tell the electrician early; our pre-wiring guide has the cable gauges and run lengths. A single retrofit shade near an outlet takes a PWS40 behind the sofa; a shade in a suspended ceiling takes the plenum-rated PWS2S. The battery shades need none of this.
Crestron shade power supplies: frequently asked
How many Crestron shades can one power supply run?
One on the CSA-PWS40, two on the CSA-PWS2S-JBOX-ZUMLINK-CN and up to ten on the CSA-PWS10S-HUB-ENET, each motor on its own output and its own home run. Crestron rates a QMT motor at 42.5 W, so the supplies are sized per output, not by adding motors on one cable.
Where should the Crestron shade power supply go?
Within Cresnet reach of the windows: about 130 ft of cable on standard Cresnet, 500 ft on Cresnet HP. In most condos that is the AV closet or a cabinet on the same floor; in a large house it can mean a PWS10S per wing.
Does the power supply connect to the Crestron processor?
The CSA-PWS10S-HUB-ENET does, over Ethernet or as a Cresnet slave, and it distributes Cresnet to its ten motors. The PWS40 and PWS2S are power only; the motors on them reach the processor through Cresnet wiring or, for the EX motors, through the infiNET EX gateway.
Do you install Crestron shades without a Crestron integrator?
We measure and specify the shades, Crestron builds them to order, our workroom sews the drapery for the track, and we install everything and commission it with the home's integrator, who owns the processor programming. On a project without an integrator we bring one in or propose Lutron or Somfy, which we program ourselves.
