Awaken is a decorative blackout from Alendel, listed in 15 colourways, in 50% polyacrylic, 34% polyester and 16% cotton, at 56 in wide. The colours run Artichoke, Bamboo, Basil, Beige, Droplet, Iris, Juniper, Surf and 7 more, across the green, beige, blue, purple and grey families. All 15 flagged in stock by Alendel. The 56 in width runs up the roll, so panels are made of joined widths with the seams hidden in the pleats, and a Roman shade under about 50 inches finished is cut from a single width. The repeat is vertical 24.25 in, horizontal 14.25 in, matched across seams and from window to window, so the yardage is figured on the repeat rather than the finished size. Cotton takes a print with a soft matte face; like linen it wants a lining that carries the UV load, and on a west-facing window we line generously so the face does not fade. Alendel lists the weight at 1.41 lb per yard, substantial for a decorative blackout, so the track or rod is sized to carry it. Care is WA (washable); Alendel's own line reads: washable 30 degrees, gentle cycle. It passes NFPA 701 and CAN/ULC S109, the drapery flame tests asked for on commercial and condo common-area work in the US and Canada; and FMVSS 302, the automotive interior test. What Awaken does at the window, and what it does not
Best use
Awaken is a decorative blackout, a cloth that blocks light on its own, so it is the bedroom and media-room drapery: pinch pleat or ripplefold on a track, with wall returns and a centre overlap sewn in so the darkness is real. As a Roman shade it blacks out a bedroom window on its own, with a snug outside mount.
Light and privacy
The cloth itself stops light, so a panel needs no separate blackout liner. How dark the room gets is decided by the construction: wall returns, a centre overlap and, on a Roman, a snug outside mount. Full privacy day and night.
Cloth and care
50% polyacrylic, 34% polyester and 16% cotton; 1.41 lb per yard; care WA (washable). Cotton and linen are lined here for the sun, and they move a little with the humidity, which is part of the look.
Limitations
At 56 in a wide panel is made of joined widths; the seams sit inside the pleats, and the repeat is matched at every seam, which costs yardage. Not for a wet bathroom or a shower window. The weight needs a track or rod sized for it; a light decorative rod will bow.
