Alendel Roman Shade Fabrics
2255 colourways in 237 patterns at 54 to 60 inches wide, the goods that run up the roll and take a flat, relaxed or hobbled fold. Every swatch and every Alendel specification, sewn in the same Fort Lauderdale workroom as our draperies.
The cloth a Roman shade is cut from
A Roman shade is sewn, not assembled, and it starts where a drapery starts: face fabric cut on grain and pattern-matched, a lining that carries the light and the UV, and a construction that decides how the folds break. This page is every Alendel drapery cloth that runs up the roll at 60 inches or narrower, 2255 colourways in 237 patterns: the 54 inch plains, the cotton prints, the jacquards, the embroideries, the chenilles and velvets, and the decorative blackouts that darken a bedroom in the face cloth alone. The wide-width railroaded goods are left off on purpose; the weave runs the wrong way for a fold.
Every pattern here is also a drapery cloth, and that is the point of the page. Our drapery clients in Fort Lauderdale, Miami, Boca Raton and Palm Beach order Roman shades for the secondary windows, the kitchen, the study, the baths and the children's rooms, from the same bolt as the panels in the living room, so the house reads as one scheme. A pattern page shows every colourway with the swatch, Alendel's width, content, repeat, care code, fire listings and weight, and the stock flag, and a filter below sorts the page by type, colour, care, fire listing, Oeko-Tex and book.

How to choose an Alendel Roman shade fabric
Flat fold for a print, any fold for a plain
A flat fold reads tailored and modern and shows a large print or an embroidery at its best, because the folds do not break the design. A relaxed fold swags softly at the hem for a casual room and a hobbled fold holds permanent overlapping pleats for a fuller, formal look; both suit a plain or a small texture. The pattern style filter sorts plains from prints, stripes and botanicals.
One width, or a seam on a fold
A 54 inch cloth makes a Roman up to roughly 50 inches finished from a single width. Wider than that the shade is seamed, and we set the seam on a fold line where it disappears; a print's repeat is matched across it. The width column on every pattern page gives Alendel's figure, and the 55 to 60 inch goods buy a few inches more.
Lining decides the light
Light-filtering lining keeps a kitchen or a study glowing; thermal lining or interlining adds body and quiet; blackout lining, or a decorative blackout face cloth with a snug outside mount, turns a bedroom dark. Over a bathtub or in a kitchen we advise a moisture-tolerant weave, which is where the care code and the polyester content on the pattern page earn their place.
Weight, stack and lift
A Roman stacks 8 to 12 inches at the top depending on the drop and the fold style, and we mount above the frame when the glass has to stay clear. Cordless lift is the child-safe standard; a Lutron or Somfy motor on wired or battery power stops at the fold positions we program. Weight per yard, listed by Alendel, sizes the headrail and the lift; a velvet Roman is built on a heavier system than a cotton print.
Why the wide-width goods are not here
Alendel's wide-width cloths, the 118 to 145 inch voiles and plains, are railroaded: the cloth is turned sideways so the width becomes the height of a drapery panel. That is exactly right for a seamless wall of glass and exactly wrong for a Roman shade, whose folds want the weave running up the shade, on grain, so the hem hangs straight and the folds break evenly. We do not cut railroaded goods into Romans. Where a room wants a wide-width sheer on the window wall and a Roman on the side window, we pick a 54 inch cloth from the same Alendel book in the same colour family, and the two read as one scheme.
The 54 to 60 inch cloths on this page are the same ones on the drapery fabrics page, and every one of them is listed with both uses. The choice between a drapery and a Roman on a given window is about the window, not the cloth: a Roman clears a counter, a bathtub or a desk and takes no wall for a stack; a drapery softens a big opening and slides clear of a door. A blackout Roman in a child's room, a print Roman over the kitchen sink and lined panels in the living room can all come from one bolt.
Two numbers on the pattern page settle most Roman decisions. The repeat, matched across every fold and every window in the room, which sets the yardage on a print or a jacquard. And the weight per yard, which sizes the headrail and the lift and tells us whether a hobbled fold, which doubles the cloth in every pleat, is the right call for that cloth. The care code matters on a kitchen or bath shade; the fire listing matters when the shades are going into a condo common area or a hotel room.

Where these Roman shade fabrics go on our installations
A Roman shade in an Alendel cloth comes out of the same workroom as our draperies and is built the way our published Roman work was: flat Roman shades through the baths, closets and powder room of a new estate at Landmark Ranch Estates in Southwest Ranches, outside-mounted to the ceiling or inside the pocket, lined in black where a Roman had to black out and motorized where one covers a bedroom window. Hems are weighted to hang straight, seams disappear into the folds, patterns are matched across every fold and window, and the headrail is sized to the exact opening for an inside or outside mount. Our guide to every Roman shade fold type shows what a flat, relaxed and hobbled fold do to a plain and to a print.
Roman shade fabrics: frequently asked
Which Alendel fabrics can be made into Roman shades?
Any cloth Alendel lists for drapery or multipurpose use at 60 inches or narrower, which is this page: 237 patterns, 2255 colourways. The wide-width railroaded goods are not cut into Romans because the weave runs the wrong way for the folds; for a matching Roman we pick a 54 inch cloth from the same book.
Can a Roman shade be blackout?
Fully. A blackout lining behind any cloth on this page, or a decorative blackout face cloth, with a snug outside mount above the frame so the light does not leak at the edges. The type filter above finds Alendel's decorative blackouts; the lining is ours.
Do you pattern-match a print across the folds?
Always. Alendel lists the vertical and horizontal repeat on each pattern page and we match it across every fold, every seam and every window in the room, which is figured into the yardage and the quote. A large print is shown best on a flat fold, where the folds do not break the design.
How wide can one Roman shade be in a 54 inch cloth?
Roughly 50 inches finished from a single width, after the side hems. Wider shades are seamed with the seam set on a fold line, or the window takes two shades on one headrail with the gap at a mullion. The 55 to 60 inch goods on this page buy a few inches more.
Are Roman shades good for a humid Florida bathroom or kitchen?
Yes with the right cloth and lining: a polyester or a polyester-cotton blend with a washable or spot-clean care code, lined, mounted so the shade clears the splash. The care code and the content are on every pattern page, and over a bathtub we advise a moisture-tolerant weave.
Can Alendel Roman shades be motorized?
Yes. Lutron and Somfy Roman systems are near-silent and each shade is programmed to stop at the fold positions we set, on wired or battery power, from a remote, an app or the home's control system. Cordless lift is the child-safe standard where a motor is not wanted. See motorized shades.
