Spago is one of the Alendel silks we make up here, with 24 colourways on the card, in 100% silk, at 54 in wide. At 54 in it is cut up the roll like a conventional drapery cloth: a panel joins widths at the seam, which sits inside a pleat, and a Roman shade takes one width up to roughly 50 inches finished before it needs a joined width. Silk is the sheen and the drape; sun is its enemy, so we line and interline it and keep it off unshaded west glass. It weighs 0.41 lb per yard by Alendel's listing, which is on the light side. Care is S (dry clean, or spot clean with a dry-cleaning solvent); Alendel's own line reads: dry clean only. Alendel lists no fire test for it, so it is a residential cloth unless a treated lining or a certificate is arranged for the project. Country of origin, as Alendel lists it: India.

Best use
We make Spago up as draperies and as Roman shades, and the two are ordered from one bolt so the repeat and the dye lot match from room to room. A plain like this takes a relaxed or hobbled fold as well as a flat one.
Light and privacy
Closed, Spago gives full privacy. What the room looks like closed comes from the lining we sew in: light-filtering for living areas, interlining for body and acoustics, blackout for bedrooms. The lining also carries the UV load off the face cloth.
Cloth and care
100% silk; 0.41 lb per yard; care S (dry clean, or spot clean with a dry-cleaning solvent). Silk is lined and interlined and kept off unshaded glass.
Limitations
At 54 in a wide panel is made of joined widths; the seams sit inside the pleats. Not for a west window without a shade in front of it. No fire listing from Alendel, so a commercial or condo common-area job needs a certificate arranged for the project or another cloth. 1 of the 24 colour is not flagged in stock, so that colour is a mill order with a longer lead time; we confirm stock before anything is cut.
