Shalimar is one of the Alendel silks we make up here, with 51 colourways on the card, in 100% silk, at 54 in wide. The card is Almond, Angora, Autumn, Bahama, Ballerina, Begonia, Biscuit, Blue Mountain plus 43 more; Alendel files them under beige, yellow, blue, pink, grey and red. 49 of the 51 flagged in stock by Alendel. The 54 in width runs up the roll, so panels are made of joined widths with the seams hidden in the pleats, and a Roman shade under about 50 inches finished is cut from a single width. Silk is the sheen and the drape; sun is its enemy, so we line and interline it and keep it off unshaded west glass. Alendel lists the weight at 0.30 lb per yard, light for a silk. Care is S (dry clean, or spot clean with a dry-cleaning solvent); Alendel's own line reads: dry clean only. Alendel lists no fire test for it, so it is a residential cloth unless a treated lining or a certificate is arranged for the project. Country of origin, as Alendel lists it: India.
What Shalimar does at the window, and what it does not
Best use
We make Shalimar up as draperies and as Roman shades, and the two are ordered from one bolt so the repeat and the dye lot match from room to room. A plain like this takes a relaxed or hobbled fold as well as a flat one.
Light and privacy
Closed, Shalimar gives full privacy. What the room looks like closed comes from the lining we sew in: light-filtering for living areas, interlining for body and acoustics, blackout for bedrooms. The lining also carries the UV load off the face cloth.
Cloth and care
100% silk; 0.30 lb per yard; care S (dry clean, or spot clean with a dry-cleaning solvent). Silk is lined and interlined and kept off unshaded glass.
Limitations
At 54 in a wide panel is made of joined widths; the seams sit inside the pleats. Not for a west window without a shade in front of it. No fire listing from Alendel, so a commercial or condo common-area job needs a certificate arranged for the project or another cloth. 2 of the 51 colours are not flagged in stock, so those are a mill order with a longer lead time; we confirm stock before anything is cut.

Alendel lists no fire test for it. That is normal for a residential decorative cloth; where a building or a project asks for NFPA 701 on the drapery we pick a listed cloth from the same book or arrange a certificate for the job.
Is Shalimar washable?
Alendel gives it care code S (dry clean, or spot clean with a dry-cleaning solvent), so it is not a washing-machine cloth. Alendel's instruction reads: dry clean only. The code is in the specification table below for every colourway.
What does Shalimar cost made up as Roman shades and draperies?
