Chess is one of the Alendel jacquards we make up here, with 4 colourways on the card, in 100% polyester, at 55 in wide. The card is Abalone, Aluminum, Evening and Heather; Alendel files them under beige, grey, black and purple. 3 of the 4 flagged in stock by Alendel. It sits in Alendel's Bryant Park Book.
At 55 in it is cut up the roll like a conventional drapery cloth: a panel joins widths at the seam, which sits inside a pleat, and a Roman shade takes one width up to roughly 50 inches finished before it needs a joined width. Alendel gives the repeat as vertical 12 in, horizontal 6.875 in; we match it across every seam and every window in the room, which adds yardage and is part of the quote. Being polyester it holds a pleat, keeps its size through humidity and a wash or a dry clean, and takes the sun better than a natural fibre, which matters on unshaded glass here. It weighs 0.71 lb per yard by Alendel's listing, which is on the light side. Care is WA-P (washable or dry clean); Alendel's own line reads: washable, dry clean. What Chess does at the window, and what it does not
Best use
We make Chess up as draperies and as Roman shades, and the two are ordered from one bolt so the repeat and the dye lot match from room to room. A abstract jacquard shows best on a flat-fold Roman, where the folds do not break the design.
Light and privacy
Closed, Chess gives full privacy. What the room looks like closed comes from the lining we sew in: light-filtering for living areas, interlining for body and acoustics, blackout for bedrooms. The lining also carries the UV load off the face cloth.
Cloth and care
100% polyester; 0.71 lb per yard; care WA-P (washable or dry clean); 35,000 rubs abrasion. Polyester keeps its size and its pleat in humid air and after cleaning, and holds its colour in the sun better than a natural fibre. Listed as Oeko-Tex.
Limitations
At 55 in a wide panel is made of joined widths; the seams sit inside the pleats, and the repeat is matched at every seam, which costs yardage. 1 of the 4 colour is not flagged in stock, so that colour is a mill order with a longer lead time; we confirm stock before anything is cut.
