Inside vs. Outside Mount Blinds & Shades: How to Choose

Inside mount or outside mount is the first decision every blind and shade order forces - and the one most often gotten wrong. Here is how we decide, window by window.

What inside vs. outside mount actually means

An inside mount sets the blind or shade inside the window frame, so the fabric sits flush with the wall and the trim stays visible. An outside mount fixes the bracket to the wall or ceiling above the opening, so the shade overlaps the frame and covers it. Every product we make - roller shades, blinds, romans, zebras - can be built either way; the window decides which is right.

When inside mount wins

Inside mount is the cleaner, more architectural look, and it is our default when the frame allows it. It needs two things: enough mounting depth (roughly 2-3 inches for most systems) and a frame that is reasonably square. Deep frames, visible trim you want to keep, and kitchens or offices where a crisp reveal matters - all inside mount territory.

When outside mount wins

Window blinds go inside vs. outside mount for one of four reasons: the frame is too shallow, the opening is out of square, there is a crank handle or tile lip in the way, or you want maximum light blockage. An outside mount roller shade overlaps the opening by a few inches on each side, which kills the light halo an inside mount always leaves - the reason bedrooms and media rooms usually go outside mount even when the depth exists.

The South Florida wrinkle

Miami and Fort Lauderdale towers complicate the choice: floor-to-ceiling glass has no frame at all, so "inside vs. outside" becomes ceiling pocket vs. surface fascia. Concrete slabs and hurricane-impact frames also limit where screws can go - one more reason we measure every opening rather than mailing you a bracket. Condo associations often require a uniform street view, which an outside-mounted fascia handles neatly.

Cordless lift vs. motorized lift

The second decision on every order: how the shade moves. Cordless lift - a spring system you nudge by hand - is clean and child-safe, and right for reachable, occasionally-used windows. Motorized lift wins everywhere else: wide spans, high glass, shades you move twice a day, and any window behind a sofa or counter. • Floor-to-ceiling condo glass → ceiling pocket or fascia (we spec it)
• Reachable, rarely moved window → cordless lift; everything else → motorized
