Zigbee vs Lutron for Motorized Shades: The Open Standard Against the Closed System
Zigbee is an open wireless standard that many brands build on, Somfy's Zigbee motors among them. Lutron is one company whose shades talk on its own radio. We install both, so here is how they really differ, with the makers' own figures.
Zigbee or Lutron for motorized shades?
Choose Lutron when the house runs, or will run, on Lutron lighting (Caséta, RadioRA 3, HomeWorks), or when you want one closed system where a single company makes every shade, remote, hub and app, on a 434 MHz radio band Lutron describes as essentially silent. Choose Zigbee, which for shades usually means Somfy's Zigbee 3.0 motors on a TaHoma switch, when you want an open standard, Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home or SmartThings control and a lower price per shade. And for new construction with an integrator, the honest answer is often neither radio: wire the shades.
- Radio: Lutron's shades talk at 434 MHz, away from Wi-Fi; Zigbee shares 2.4 GHz with it.
- Network: Lutron uses repeaters, each device within 30 ft of one; Zigbee builds a mesh from its powered devices, and battery shades do not add to it.
- Voice: both reach Alexa, Google and Apple Home today; neither shade is a native Matter device.
- Price: on our list a 72 by 84 in roller runs about $793 (battery) to $1,910 (wired) on Somfy, priced with RTS motors (Zigbee adds $11 to $49 per motor at Somfy retail), and about $3,141 on wired Lutron.
We are a Lutron Certified Dealer and a Somfy Expert, and we have put both in homes from Hallandale Beach to Boca Raton, so we have no reason to push one. Every figure on this page is linked to the maker's or the testing lab's document under Sources.

Lutron Triathlon
A battery roller on Lutron's Clear Connect radio, D cells in the headrail, controlled by Pico remotes, keypads and the Lutron app through Caséta, RadioRA 3 or HomeWorks. Lutron does not sell its motors separately; shades are quoted per window. The wired family is Sivoia QS. All Lutron shades.
434 MHz against 2.4 GHz #
The biggest technical difference is where each radio lives on the dial.
Lutron: a band of its own
Lutron built Clear Connect Type A on 434 MHz, a band its white paper calls "essentially silent", with plenty of room, and its devices transmit only when someone presses a button or a schedule fires; there is no constant polling. Lutron shades, Caséta and Pico remotes all live there. Lutron's newer radio, Type X, moved to 2.4 GHz on IEEE 802.15.4 for dense lighting systems (HomeWorks QSX, and RadioRA 3's Sunnata dimmers and keypads), with mesh rules of its own: each device wants two or more powered Type X devices within 25 ft.
Zigbee: sharing the air with Wi-Fi
Zigbee runs on IEEE 802.15.4 at 2.4 GHz, 250 kbps, on channels 2 MHz wide spaced 5 MHz apart, beside Wi-Fi's 20 to 22 MHz channels. Silicon Labs' coexistence tests show what that costs: strong Wi-Fi on an overlapping channel can block Zigbee transmissions outright, messages fall back on retries, and a battery device that must stay awake to retry spends its battery doing it. Channels far from the Wi-Fi in use fare much better.
What it means in a South Florida tower
A condo tower surrounds every unit with other people's Wi-Fi. Zigbee works well there when the hub sits near the shades on a channel clear of the busiest Wi-Fi; Lutron's Type A shades simply are not on 2.4 GHz. In a single-family house with one router, the difference shrinks.
Repeaters against a mesh #
Lutron: a published distance rule
Lutron writes the rule down: every Clear Connect Type A device within 30 ft of a repeater or processor, and repeaters no more than 60 ft apart, indoor figures it says are set for worst-case conditions. A RadioRA 3 processor takes 95 Type A devices. In a Boca Raton house we fitted, fourteen battery Triathlon shades run on a Caséta Smart Bridge Pro with two repeaters covering the house.
Zigbee: the mesh is only as strong as its powered devices
A Zigbee network has one coordinator, the hub, and routers that stay powered and carry everyone's messages; end devices talk only to their parent router and pass nothing on (Nordic Semiconductor). Routers must stay powered, so battery shades join as end devices. Somfy's datasheet for its mains-powered Sonesse 40 Zigbee says it "acts as a Zigbee mesh network router to extend radio range". So a home of wired Zigbee shades builds its own mesh, while a home of battery shades leans on the hub and on whatever powered Zigbee devices are nearby, and a far room may need a second hub or a powered device on the way.
Capacity
One Somfy TaHoma switch controls up to 60 Somfy Zigbee products and 40 channels of RTS; several cover a larger home. Each Lutron hub or processor has its own published device count.
Alexa, Google, Apple Home, and where Matter stands #
Both reach the big three
Lutron does it through its own hub or processor: Lutron says Caséta pairs with Apple HomeKit, Google Home and Amazon Alexa, and its RadioRA 3 specification adds Sonos and Ring, with professional AV and security systems reaching it through Lutron's LEAP API. Somfy does it through the TaHoma switch: since September 2023 all of Somfy's supported Zigbee motors for interior windows are certified for Apple Home, and Somfy lists Alexa, Google Home, SmartThings and IFTTT as well.
Matter, in October 2026
Matter runs over IP on Wi-Fi and Thread, so a Zigbee device reaches a Matter controller only through a bridge. Lutron sits on the Connectivity Standards Alliance board, but PCWorld reported in July 2025 that its products do not support Matter, and a June 2026 guide still found Caséta reaching the ecosystems through its own hub. So neither choice makes a shade a native Matter device today, and neither needs to for Alexa, Google or Apple Home.
Professional control systems
Lutron shades join Crestron, Control4 and Savant natively through Caséta, RadioRA 3 or HomeWorks. Somfy's Zigbee and RTS motors reach the same systems through the TaHoma integration. More on that: Crestron shades, Somfy smart home and integration.
Batteries, wiring and noise #
Battery
Lutron's battery shades take D cells in the headrail; for the Boca Raton house Lutron estimates roughly two to four years between changes, depending on use. Somfy's Zigbee WireFree motors recharge instead: the Glydea ULTRA 50 WireFree Zigbee drapery motor runs on a 21.9 V lithium-ion pack charged by USB-C, under 4 hours to 80%, and the Sonesse 28 and ULTRA 30 WireFree roller motors come with built-in lithium-ion batteries.
Wired
Both makers wire. Lutron's Sivoia QS carries power and data on one low-voltage run, as on fourteen openings at Hillsboro Mile with no batteries anywhere. Somfy's Sonesse 30 Zigbee runs on 24 V DC, as at Bay Drive in Pompano Beach: hard-wired, Zigbee 3.0, 47 dB, 2 Nm. Wired Zigbee motors also strengthen the mesh, because powered devices route.
Noise
Somfy publishes figures: 47 dB for the Sonesse 30, 42 dB for the Sonesse ULTRA 30 WireFree, 44 dB for the Sonesse 28 WireFree Zigbee with a built-in battery. Lutron describes its shades as near-silent and publishes ceilings rather than typical levels. In a bedroom, both are quiet enough that the fabric is usually the louder part.
Zigbee or Lutron, home by home #
Our experience What we recommend most often. The visit settles your home.
| Your home | Usually choose | Why |
|---|---|---|
| The house runs on Lutron lighting (Caséta, RadioRA 3, HomeWorks) | Lutron | Shades join the same keypads, Pico remotes and scenes, on one system. |
| An Apple Home, SmartThings or Alexa household that mixes brands | Zigbee (Somfy) | Somfy's Zigbee motors are certified for Apple Home and reach five ecosystems through TaHoma. |
| A finished condo, no wiring, a budget | Zigbee (Somfy WireFree) or Lutron battery | Rechargeable Somfy motors or Lutron's D-cell shades; the hub decides the rest. |
| A tower crowded with Wi-Fi networks | Lutron, or wired | Type A sits at 434 MHz, away from 2.4 GHz; wiring sidesteps radio altogether. |
| Crestron, Control4 or Savant with an integrator | Either | Lutron natively; Somfy through TaHoma. The integrator's preference usually decides. |
| New construction or a gut renovation | Wired, either brand | Lutron Sivoia QS or Somfy 24 V motors on a panel: never charged, no radio to manage. |

Zigbee vs Lutron: questions
Is Zigbee or Lutron better for motorized shades? #
Neither wins everywhere, because they are different kinds of thing. Lutron is one company's closed system on its own 434 MHz Clear Connect radio, which its white paper calls an essentially silent band; it is the better fit for a home that runs on Lutron lighting, for integrator projects and for towers crowded with Wi-Fi. Zigbee is an open 2.4 GHz standard; for shades that usually means Somfy's Zigbee 3.0 motors on a TaHoma switch, the better fit for Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home or SmartThings households and for a lower price per shade.
Is Lutron Zigbee? #
No. Lutron's shades, Caséta and Pico remotes use Lutron's own Clear Connect Type A radio at 434 MHz. Its newer Clear Connect Type X, used by HomeWorks QSX and RadioRA 3's Sunnata controls, runs at 2.4 GHz on IEEE 802.15.4, the same radio layer Zigbee uses, but it is Lutron's own protocol, not Zigbee, and Zigbee devices cannot join it.
Do Zigbee shades work with Alexa, Google Home and Apple Home? #
Somfy's do. Through the TaHoma switch, Somfy's Zigbee 3.0 interior motors are certified for Apple Home (since September 2023) and work with Amazon Alexa, Google Home, Samsung SmartThings and IFTTT. Other Zigbee shade brands depend on the hub they pair with.
Do Lutron shades work with Alexa, Google Home and Apple Home? #
Yes, through the Lutron hub or processor. Lutron says Caséta pairs with Apple HomeKit, Google Home and Amazon Alexa, and its RadioRA 3 specification lists Alexa, Apple HomeKit, Google Assistant, Sonos and Ring, with professional AV and security systems reaching it through Lutron's LEAP API.
Do Zigbee or Lutron shades support Matter? #
Not natively, either of them. Matter runs over IP on Wi-Fi and Thread, so a Zigbee device reaches a Matter controller only through a bridge. Lutron sits on the Connectivity Standards Alliance board, but PCWorld reported in July 2025 that its products do not support Matter, and a June 2026 guide still found Caséta reaching Alexa, Apple Home and Google through its own hub instead. Both already reach the same voice assistants.
What range do Zigbee and Lutron shades have? #
Lutron publishes an indoor rule: each Clear Connect Type A device within 30 ft of a repeater or processor, repeaters up to 60 ft apart. Zigbee range depends on the mesh: mains-powered devices act as routers and pass messages along, while battery devices talk only to their parent router, so a house full of battery shades leans on the hub and any powered Zigbee devices nearby. Somfy's Zigbee datasheet gives no range figure.
Does Wi-Fi interfere with Zigbee shades? #
It can. Zigbee shares the 2.4 GHz band with Wi-Fi, and Silicon Labs' tests show strong Wi-Fi on an overlapping channel blocking Zigbee transmissions and forcing retries, which also cost battery devices power. A Zigbee channel clear of the home's busiest Wi-Fi and a hub near the shades avoid most of it. Lutron's Type A shades sit at 434 MHz, away from Wi-Fi.
Can I have Zigbee and Lutron shades in the same house? #
Yes, on two hubs, joined at the level above them: Apple Home, Alexa or Google can show both, and Crestron, Control4 and Savant can drive both (Lutron natively, Somfy through TaHoma). For one consistent look and one remote per room, we usually keep a home on one shade system.
How do the batteries compare? #
Lutron's battery shades take D cells in the headrail; for the fourteen Triathlon shades in a Boca Raton house we installed, Lutron estimates roughly two to four years between changes. Somfy's Zigbee WireFree motors recharge: the Glydea ULTRA 50 WireFree Zigbee drapery motor, for example, uses a 21.9 V lithium-ion pack charged by USB-C, under 4 hours to 80%. Both makers also build wired versions that never need charging.
What do Zigbee and Lutron shades cost? #
From our price list, one 72 by 84 in motorized roller shade is about $793 on Somfy's battery WireFree tier and $1,910 wired on a Somfy power panel, against about $3,141 wired Lutron with its power panel; Lutron battery shades are quoted per window. Those Somfy tiers use RTS motors; on Somfy's 2026 retail list the Zigbee version of a motor costs $11 to $49 more, and a TaHoma switch with its Ethernet adaptor is $220.61. Budgetary, before tax.
