Custom vs Store-Bought Shades: When the Extra Cost Is Worth It

Sooner or later every shade question becomes a price question. A cordless roller shade from a big-box store can cost $32.98; a custom motorized shade from a workroom like ours starts at several hundred dollars a window. This guide puts real September 2026 prices on both, shows what the difference actually buys, and says plainly where a store-bought shade is the smarter purchase. We make custom shades, so we priced the store shades ourselves and list every source at the end.

Three ways to buy a shade

Store-bought and custom are not two products. They are three ways of buying the same kind of product, and what separates them is how much of the job, and of the risk, you carry yourself.

• Off the shelf. Stock shades in standard widths and one or two lengths, cordless, home the same day. Some are cut to your width free in the store: Levolor's Trim+Go roller shades at Lowe's come 37, 55 or 73 in wide and 72 or 78 in long. You measure, you install.
• Made to measure, ordered online. Big-box stores and online retailers also build shades to the width and height you send. The smallest made-to-measure roller shade we found at The Home Depot started under $30, and prices rise with size, fabric and motor. You measure and install, or pay for the store's service: at Lowe's, installation starts at $25 per shade with a $75 minimum, and a professional measure costs $45, credited back when you order the installation.
• Custom from a local workroom. One team measures every opening, the shade is made to that measurement, and the same team installs and programs it. That is how we work: our own team measures, installs and programs every shade, with no subcontracted installers, and every piece is made to measure in our own workroom.

What one window costs, September 2026

The same window, priced the ways people actually buy. Store prices are the retailers' listed prices on September 27, 2026, product only and before tax, and they change often. Ours are from our published September 2026 price list, budgetary and before tax, measured and installed by our own team; the free in-home measure sets the exact size bracket. Sizes are width by height.

Read the 72 in rows side by side. The store shade is about $88 and can go up the same afternoon; ours is about $583 manual, or $793 on a Somfy WireFree motor, measured and installed. Add the store's installation service to its shade and it is still well under half our price. On the 96 by 108 in window there is no store-bought row at all: the stock line stops at 73 by 78 in, so a window that size means a made-to-measure order whichever way you buy.

A motor changes the arithmetic less than people expect. On our list, motorizing a manual roller shade adds about $150 on our Essential rechargeable motor or about $210 on a Somfy Sonesse 30 WireFree, remote included. The bigger step is a wired system, because its figure carries the low-voltage power panel (one panel serves up to five motors) and, on Lutron, the control architecture a whole house can be built on. Store-bought vs custom: side by side

What changes, row by row. The store column describes stock shades and store-brand smart shades like the ones priced above; made-to-measure online orders sit somewhere between the two columns.

What the extra cost buys

A shade made to the opening. A stock shade comes in the store's widths and is cut down to yours; a custom shade is made to the measured opening and to the space around it. That matters most where a building gives a shade almost no room. At The Hemispheres in Hallandale Beach the shades had about two and a half inches to live in, and the widest spans 110 inches, so it was built on a reinforced tube that carries the full width without bowing, behind a lacquered basswood valance that turns the corner at 60 degrees. A single shade of ours runs to 144 in wide; wider openings are built as two coupled shades.

The right fabric for the exposure. A store line offers the colours and opacities it stocks. We choose the fabric window by window: a solar screen from Mermet or Phifer at an openness chosen for the exposure where a west-facing room needs the glare and heat cut but the view kept (Mermet E Screen comes in 1%, 3%, 5% and 10%), a light-filtering weave where softness matters more, a blackout where the room has to be dark, or a dual shade that carries a screen and a blackout on one window. Darkness that is designed. Any shade mounted inside the frame leaves a thin line of daylight at each edge, wherever it was bought. For a room that has to be dark we mount outside the frame so the fabric overlaps the opening by 2 to 3 in on each side and above, or capture the fabric edges in aluminum side channels, and the blackout can match the fabric in the rest of the home. Motors that run as one system. A store smart shade is one motor with its own remote and the brand's app. Custom motorization is a choice of systems: our Essential tier on Dooya rechargeable motors; the Somfy Sonesse ULTRA 30 WireFree, rated at 42 dB; wired Somfy Sonesse 50 on a 24 V power panel that never needs charging; or Lutron, the architecture HomeWorks and RadioRA 3 homes are built on, with Crestron and Control4 projects quoted per specification. At The Hemispheres every shade sits on one Somfy Zigbee network behind a TaHoma hub and the shades are synchronized, so the whole wraparound rises as one line of fabric. At Landmark Ranch Estates the Somfy motors run from a Lutron keypad in every room, with not one remote in the house.

One team from the measure to the last programmed button. Our own team measures, installs and programs every shade, with no subcontracted installers, and every piece is made to measure in our own workroom, about 3 to 4 weeks, then installed in one to two days. The in-home consultation and the written quote cost nothing, and our published figures include the measure and the installation.

Hardware you never see. A fascia across the roll, a valance, or a pocket framed into the ceiling so the fabric simply begins at the ceiling line. When store-bought is the smart buy

Custom is not always the right answer, and a shade that costs several times more should earn it. A store-bought shade is the better value when:

• You rent, or expect to move within a year or two
• The window is a stock size, within reach, in a room that asks little: a laundry, a garage, a guest room that stays closed
• You need something up this week while you learn where the sun comes in
• A thin line of light at the edges does not matter
• The budget has to stretch across the whole house: then spend on the rooms that work hardest, the bedrooms and the sun-facing glass, and save in the rest

Stock shades are cordless, home the same day, and some are cut to your width free in the store. For those rooms that is hard to beat.

Where custom pays for itself in South Florida

• Floor-to-ceiling condo glass. The widest Trim+Go roller shade is 73 in wide and 78 in long; the floor-to-ceiling condo bay on our price list is 96 by 108 in, about $918 motorized on our Essential tier or $978 on Somfy WireFree.
• Sliding doors and walls of glass. A 14-foot slider is built as two coupled shades; the main-floor example on our price list includes one.
• West and south glass. Where the afternoon sun sits on the window, a solar screen chosen by openness cuts glare and heat and keeps the view; see solar shades.
• Bedrooms and media rooms. Dark takes a blackout fabric, an overlap or side channels, and edges planned before anything is ordered.
• Tall, wide or many windows. Reach and repetition are where motors earn their keep, and where the choice of system matters most; see motorized shades.
• A home that should read as one. One fabric family, one hem line and one keypad or remote from room to room.

The middle road: made to measure from a big-box store

Between the shelf and the workroom sits the made-to-measure order: you send the width and height and the shade is built to them. For standard windows and a confident tape measure it can be good value. Before you order:

• Measure the way the retailer asks, then measure again; our measuring guide explains inside and outside mount
• Check the depth of the frame: motorized shades need more depth than manual ones, about 3 in inside the frame for a Somfy Sonesse 30, for example
• Read the retailer's remake policy for a wrong measurement before you pay
• Price the installation if you are not doing it yourself: at Lowe's it starts at $25 per shade with a $75 minimum
• Ask what runs the motor, and whether it will work with anything else in your home

Cords and children: the store shelf is already cordless

This is one place where store-bought starts ahead. Since 2022 a federal rule has treated stock window coverings with accessible operating cords longer than 8 in, or with continuous cord loops, as a substantial product hazard, which is why shelf shades are cordless or have short or inaccessible cords. Custom window coverings follow the voluntary ANSI/WCMA A100.1-2022 standard, which already prohibits accessible, free-hanging operating cords longer than 8 in on them, and on September 24, 2026 the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission proposed making its cord requirements mandatory for custom window coverings too. Cordless is our default on every shade a hand can reach, and motorized when the windows are tall, wide or many.

How to decide in five questions

1. Are you staying? If you will move within a year or two, store-bought is hard to beat.
2. Is the window a stock size? Wider than 73 in or taller than 78 in, the largest stock roller shade we priced, and you are ordering made to measure anyway.
3. Does the room have to be dark, or keep its view in full sun? Then the fabric and the mount decide the result, and that is where custom earns its price.
4. Can you reach it, and how many are there? Tall, wide or many windows are where motors pay off.
5. Should it match the rest of the house? One fabric family and one hem line from room to room is a custom result.

Frequently asked questions

Are custom shades worth the extra cost?

Yes, where a shade has real work to do: a large, tall or unusual window, a room that has to be dark, sun that has to be managed without losing the view, motors that should run as one system, or a home where every window should match. On a standard window in a rental or a room that asks little, a store-bought shade is the better value.

How much more do custom shades cost than store-bought?

On a 72 in window, several times more. On September 27, 2026 a 73 in Levolor Trim+Go cordless blackout roller shade was $87.98 at Lowe's. What does the extra money pay for?

A shade made to the measured opening instead of the nearest stock size, a fabric chosen for the exposure, darkness designed with overlap or side channels, motors that run as one system, and one team that measures, makes, installs and programs every shade.

Are store-bought shades good enough?

For stock-size windows in rooms that ask little of a shade, yes. They are cordless, available the same day, and some are cut to your width free in the store. They fall short on size, fabric choice, darkness at the edges and motor systems.

Can a store-bought shade cover a large window or a sliding door?

Usually not in one piece from the shelf: the widest Levolor Trim+Go roller shade is 73 in wide and 78 in long. We make one shade up to 144 in wide, and build wider openings, such as a 14-foot slider, as two coupled shades.

Can I motorize the store-bought shades I already have?

Some store lines sell a motorized version instead, such as a 36 by 72 in smart roller shade with a rechargeable motor and remote, $159.00 at The Home Depot when we checked. Manual roller shades can also be re-tubed with a Lutron or Somfy motor; whether that is worth doing on a store shade depends on its fabric and brackets, which we look at during the consultation.

Do big-box stores sell custom shades?

Yes, made to measure and usually ordered online: you send the width and height and the shade is built to them. Prices start under $30 for the smallest sizes and rise with size, fabric and motor; the Levolor Custom Motorized roller shade at The Home Depot started at $250.05 on sale, $454.64 regular, when we checked. You measure and install, or pay for the store's service.

A wired motor system adds a $500 cable run, once, if the home has no cable for the motors to connect to. With a store-bought shade, installation is yours or a paid service: at Lowe's it starts at $25 per shade with a $75 minimum.
