A textured light-filtering and blackout pair in stone tones

Elba is Mermet's textured Daylight and Twilight pair. Elba Daylight is a 100% polyester jacquard at under 1% openness, 118 inches wide and 5.60 oz per square yard, that blocks the view in both directions by day while passing 10% to 36% of the visible light, so the room stays bright and the cloth glows with the light behind it. It publishes NRC 0.20 and about 99% UV blockage, with ASTM E84 (Class A) and California Technical Bulletin 117 fire listings. The five colours are Pumice, Limestone, Slate, Basalt and Obsidian.

Elba Twilight is the blackout in the same five colour names: polyester with an acrylic coating, 118 inches wide, 11.8 oz per square yard, Tv 0 and about 100% UV blockage, listed to ASTM E84 (Class B) and California Technical Bulletin 117. It reflects 68% to 84% of the solar energy that reaches it, which keeps a closed bedroom noticeably cooler, and every colourway has a photograph of its reverse face on this page. One colour therefore covers a living room and a bedroom, in two different fabrics that read as one scheme.

Tv = visible light transmitted, Ts = solar energy transmitted, Rs = solar energy reflected, As = solar energy absorbed, Rv = visible light reflected, in percent, as published by Mermet USA for the fabric on its own. SHGC int. and SHGC ext. = solar heat gain coefficient of the fabric mounted inside or outside residential double glazing, from the same spec sheets; UPF = Mermet's ultraviolet protection rating where it publishes one. We bring the sample books to the consultation.

South Florida

Where Elba works here

At The Hemispheres in Hallandale Beach the living areas run Elba Daylight in Limestone on Somfy Sonesse 30 Zigbee rollers, with Elba Twilight in the same Limestone in the bedroom, caulked at every edge and fitted in about two and a half inches of depth. That is the pattern we repeat along the Intracoastal: the Daylight weave where the light matters and the neighbour is close, the Twilight twin where the room has to go dark, one colour through the apartment.

Elba is the textured jacquard pair in five stone tones; Sofia is the smoother pair in six warmer colours with a higher acoustic rating.

Good to Know

Elba: frequently asked

Can Elba Daylight and Elba Twilight go in the same window?

Yes, on a dual roller, and that is how the pair is meant to be used: the jacquard in front for daytime privacy and soft light, the blackout behind it for the night. Both are 118 inches wide, so the two shades match in width as well as colour.

How dark does Elba Twilight make a bedroom?

The fabric passes no light at all, Tv 0 with about 100% UV blockage. The edges decide the rest. At The Hemispheres we caulked every edge in a shallow pocket; where the depth allows, side channels are the better answer. See blackout shades for how we detail them.

How wide can a Mermet Elba shade be?

Mermet publishes standard roll widths of 118" (300 cm) for Elba, so a single shade can run to about 118 inches wide before a seam or a second shade is needed. Wider openings are covered with two shades on one headrail programmed to move together, or with a seam placed where the mullion hides it. We confirm the exact limit for the chosen system when we measure.

Which shades can be made in Elba?

Elba is a roller shade fabric. We source it directly from Mermet, so the same weave goes on Lutron, Somfy, Crestron or Vertilux motors or a manual chain, cut and finished in our Fort Lauderdale workroom and installed by our own team from Miami to Palm Beach.

Can I see Elba samples before ordering?

Yes. We keep the Mermet sample books in the Fort Lauderdale workroom (4539 Powerline Rd, by appointment) and the Miami Beach showroom (500 South Pointe Dr #150), and we bring the colours you shortlist to the in-home consultation so you can hold them against your glass in your own light.
