Original Manufacturer Parts vs Generic Copies: What Changes for Your Warranty
A motor from the maker and a copy made to fit it look the same on the quote and the same on the wall. They stop being the same the day something fails. Here is what Somfy's and Lutron's own warranty documents say, what federal law adds, and where it leaves you, part by part.
Does a generic part void a Somfy or Lutron warranty?
By the makers' own terms, a copy never carries their warranty, and it can cost the original parts around it their coverage too. Somfy's warranty, five years on motors from the date stamped on the motor, excludes damage from "modifications, combination or use with any products, materials, processes, systems or other matter not provided or authorized in writing by SOMFY", electrical accessories "that have not been previously approved in writing by the SOMFY Engineering Department", batteries other than Somfy's own, and "any products purchased from third party sellers who may, for example, sell products on sites such as eBay or Amazon". Lutron's eight-year shading warranty excludes "use of incompatible devices or accessories" and "unauthorized repairs or adjustments or alterations", and Lutron reserves the right to reject claims on products bought from unauthorized sellers.
Federal law narrows that, but less than it sounds. Under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act a maker cannot void a consumer warranty simply because a non-brand part was used, unless it supplies the part free or holds an FTC waiver; it can refuse to cover damage the part caused. So the argument is never "you used a copy", it is "the copy caused this", you are the one making the case, and the shade is down while it is made. Neither maker pays for labor, and Somfy's trade warranty runs to the company that bought the motor, so the claim goes through whoever built and installed the shade.
- The copy is covered by nobody but its seller. Somfy's warranty "does not cover any other equipment, components, or devices used in conjunction with SOMFY products".
- The clock starts before you buy. Somfy's five years run from the date stamped on the motor, so a "new" motor from a marketplace listing can arrive with years already used, and no coverage at all under the third-party-seller clause. Lutron's eight years run from the day Lutron shipped.
- Labor is the expensive part, and it is never the maker's. Somfy: "SOMFY will not be responsible for any labor costs related in any way to the warranty or replacement process." Lutron excludes "On-site labor costs to diagnose issues with, and remove, repair, replace, adjust, reinstall and/or reprogram" the system.
- A budget motor sold under its own name is not a copy. Our Essential track runs on Dooya motors and says so. The problem is the part that borrows a brand's name or system without the brand behind it.
We are a certified Somfy Expert and SDN Specialist and a Lutron Certified Dealer. We buy through both makers' authorized channels and install with our own team, so we are the ones who file these claims. Every quotation on this page comes from the maker's document linked under Sources. The page explains how the documents read; it is not legal advice.
Original, compatible copy, grey market #
Every part on a motorized shade is one of these three. Only the first one comes with the maker's paper.
Original
The maker's part, through the maker's channel
A Somfy motor, remote, bracket, crown and drive, power supply or battery pack with Somfy's part number, bought through Somfy's distribution by an end product supplier, the dealer or fabricator that builds and installs the shade. A Lutron drive, Pico, hub or power supply through a Lutron Certified Dealer.
It carries the maker's warranty, its date code or ship record, its documentation and its technical support, and all of them reach you through the dealer.
Compatible copy
Someone else's part, made to fit or imitate
The "Somfy compatible" remote, the clone tubular motor sold as answering a Somfy remote, the printed or cast crown and drive set "for Somfy 50", the generic motor bracket and adaptor plate, the no-name 12 V or 24 V supply, the lithium wand and charger with no maker on them, the dry-contact relay or RF bridge from a marketplace.
It often works on day one. It carries only its seller's terms, and Somfy and Lutron have approved none of it in writing.
Grey market and counterfeit
A real-looking original from the wrong place
A Somfy or Lutron part from a third-party marketplace seller: old stock with a date code years back, an export version built for another market, a return, or an outright fake.
It looks original on the wall and falls under both makers' unauthorized-seller clauses on the day you need them.
Not a copy: a different motor sold as itself. A budget motor under its own maker's name, with that maker's terms and documents, is a different product chosen with open eyes. Our Essential motorized curtain track runs on Dooya motors and its page says so, and what it gives up against Somfy. That is an honest trade. The copy is the part that borrows a brand's name, its radio or its fit without the brand behind it.
What Somfy's own terms say about parts that are not Somfy's #
Somfy's Terms and Conditions of Sale, section VII, effective 1 January 2025, are the document the trade warranty lives in. The left column is Somfy's wording; the right column is what it means when a copy is in the system.
Swipe sideways to see both columns.
| Somfy's words | What it means for a copy |
|---|---|
| "SOMFY warrants that its motors will be free from defects in material and workmanship under normal and proper use ... for a period of five (5) years starting from the date stamped on the motor." Mechanical, electrical and electronic accessories: five years from the date of manufacture.Terms of Sale, VII | The clock is on the part, not on your invoice. A motor that sat in a marketplace seller's stock for two years arrives with three left. Ask for the date code at handover and write it on the quote. |
| "If SOMFY products are used with electrical accessories (switches, relays, etc.) that have not been previously approved in writing by the SOMFY Engineering Department." (listed under what the warranty does not apply to)Terms of Sale, VII | A generic relay, dry-contact interface, timer or RF bridge driving a Somfy motor puts the motor outside the warranty in Somfy's own words. Somfy's wiring notes explain why it cares: a wired tubular motor takes its supply on one direction at a time, wiring motors in parallel "will result in damage to the motor", and group control needs "a relay, designed for use with tubular motors, which isolates each motor connection". |
| Damage resulting from "modifications, combination or use with any products, materials, processes, systems or other matter not provided or authorized in writing by SOMFY; unauthorized repair; normal wear and tear".Terms of Sale, VII | The copy crown, drive, bracket or adaptor on a Somfy motor, the clone motor paired into a Somfy system, the motor opened to fit any of them. This is the clause a copy lands in, and the one Somfy points to when a motor comes back with someone else's hardware on it. |
| "This limited warranty does not apply to software components of products, batteries, or any issues associated with the stability of Buyer's Wi-Fi network." Somfy's own embedded and external rechargeable batteries are the exception.Terms of Sale, VII | A no-name battery wand, pack or charger is outside from the first day, and a charging fault it causes in the motor is the "damage caused by" case that federal law lets a maker refuse. |
| "This limited warranty covers only SOMFY products (and not services) and does not cover any other equipment, components, or devices used in conjunction with SOMFY products."Terms of Sale, VII | The copy itself is nobody's claim but its seller's. Somfy will not replace a generic part that fails, whatever it was attached to. |
| "This limited warranty does not cover any products purchased from third party sellers who may, for example, sell products on sites such as eBay or Amazon."Terms of Sale, VII | A genuine Somfy part from a marketplace seller has no Somfy warranty. Somfy's consumer store terms say the same. The part can be real, in the box, with the logo, and still be uncovered on the day it matters. |
| "SOMFY's only obligation shall be to repair or replace defective product which do not conform to the warranty." ... "SOMFY will not be responsible for any labor costs related in any way to the warranty or replacement process."Terms of Sale, VII | The part is replaced; the visit is not. Taking the shade down, diagnosing, swapping the motor, reprogramming and rehanging is between you and whoever installed it, with original parts or without. |
| "This limited warranty extends only to the original purchaser of products and services." Somfy's warranty page: "we will repair or replace it free of charge through your end product supplier."Somfy warranty page | The claim belongs to the company that bought the motor from Somfy and built your shade. You need them in business, reachable and willing to file it, which is the strongest reason to buy the shade and its service from the same people. |
What Lutron's terms say #
Lutron's Shading Solutions Eight Year Limited Warranty, document 368-5115 Rev C of December 2024, is shorter and stricter about one thing Somfy's is not: access.
Swipe sideways to see both columns.
| Lutron's words | What it means for a copy |
|---|---|
| "eight years as to the other Systems and the electronic drive unit, shade fabric and shade hardware"; "one year as to the wall controls, interfaces and system accessories"; both "from the date of shipment by Lutron". Repair or credit toward replacement: 100 percent up to five years from shipment, 50 percent from five to eight, none after. | Eight years on the drive, the fabric and the hardware, one year on the keypads and interfaces, and the clock starts when Lutron ships, not when the shade goes up. After year five a failed drive is covered at half. |
| Not covered: "incorrect installation", "use of incompatible devices or accessories", "unauthorized repairs or adjustments or alterations", damage from non-Lutron lighting and automation systems and from building wiring. | Lutron shades run on Lutron's own radio and are sold through its dealers, so the copy problem arrives differently: a third-party integration box, a repair by someone outside the dealer network, or a drive moved onto a tube or bracket it was not shipped with. |
| Not covered: "On-site labor costs to diagnose issues with, and remove, repair, replace, adjust, reinstall and/or reprogram" the System. | Same as Somfy: the part, never the visit. |
| Coverage ends where Lutron cannot get at the part: the warranty is void if components are concealed or built in so that Lutron cannot inspect or repair them. | A sealed pocket is a warranty problem, not only a service problem. Every recessed pocket needs a way to reach the drive. |
| Lutron sells its shading systems through its dealer network. Its Caseta warranty, effective 1 April 2026, states that Lutron "reserves the right to reject warranty claims from purchasers for Products purchased from unauthorized sellers". | A Lutron part from an unauthorized online seller is a claim Lutron can refuse. The authorized route is a Lutron Certified Dealer, which is what we are. |
What federal warranty law adds #
The makers write the terms; the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act and the Federal Trade Commission set the limits on them. Three sentences matter.
1. A maker cannot tie its warranty to its own parts
15 U.S.C. 2302(c) says no warrantor of a consumer product may condition its warranty on the consumer using any article or service identified by brand name, other than one provided free under the warranty, unless the FTC waives the rule. The FTC's guide puts it plainly: "Generally, tie-in sales provisions aren't allowed", and gives the example it will not accept: "To keep your new Plenum Brand Vacuum Cleaner warranty in effect, you must use genuine Plenum Brand Filter Bags." In April 2018 the FTC warned six companies that wording such as "This warranty shall not apply if this product ... is used with products not sold or licensed by [company name]" is generally prohibited.
2. But it can refuse the damage an outside part caused
The same FTC guide: "it is permissible to disclaim warranty coverage for defects or damage caused by the use of parts or service you didn't provide", with its own example of acceptable wording: "Damage caused to the AudioMundo Stereo System by you or any non-authorized third party, however, may void this warranty." A copy charger that cooks a charging circuit, a relay that feeds a motor from both sides, a loose crown that wears a bearing: the law is on the maker's side for the damage, whoever sold the part.
3. Where that leaves a homeowner
The question stops being "was a copy used" and becomes "did the copy cause this", argued over a returned motor with a non-approved accessory in its history, through your dealer, with no labor covered on either side. A generic part is legal to use. It is simply yours to defend. One more thing to know: Somfy's trade warranty is written to its direct purchaser, the dealer, and its terms say that where Somfy extends a warranty to a consumer, the consumer provisions take precedence. This page describes how the documents read; it is not legal advice, and the documents are linked below so you can read them yourself.
Where a copy bites, part by part #
Six places a generic part turns up on a motorized shade, what the original is, what the copy looks like, and what happens to the coverage.
Motors #
- The original
- Sonesse, Altus, Maestria, Glydea and Irismo bought through Somfy's distribution, with Somfy's date code on the label; Lutron drives shipped to a Lutron Certified Dealer.
- The copy you will be offered
- A clone tubular motor listed as working with a Somfy remote, or a "Somfy" motor from a marketplace storefront.
- What goes wrong, and where the warranty goes
- The clone may answer the remote on day one. Nobody at Somfy tested it, supports it, or covers the real Somfy motors it now shares a system with ("combination or use with any products ... not provided or authorized in writing by SOMFY"). The marketplace Somfy has no Somfy warranty at all under the third-party-seller clause, and its five years may be half gone on the date code before it is ever installed.
Remotes, wall switches, relays and bridges #
- The original
- Situo, Telis, Smoove and DecoFlex controls, Somfy's RTS receivers, dry-contact interfaces and relays, SDN keypads; Lutron Pico remotes, hubs and processors.
- The copy you will be offered
- "Somfy compatible" remotes, generic 433 MHz wall switches, marketplace relays, timers and RF bridges wired in for integration.
- What goes wrong, and where the warranty goes
- This is the exclusion Somfy names outright: electrical accessories "not previously approved in writing by the SOMFY Engineering Department". A clone remote is unlikely to hurt the motor, but the limits it sets and the pairing it holds are unsupported. A relay that does not isolate each motor connection can feed motors in parallel or both directions at once; Somfy's own wiring note says parallel wiring "will result in damage to the motor", and that damage is nobody's claim.
See: Somfy remotes and switches · Somfy controllers and relays · RTS interfaces
Crowns, drives, brackets and adaptor plates #
- The original
- Somfy's crown and drive sets by tube profile, its motor and idler brackets and adaptor plates, made to Somfy's tolerances; the bracket and tube Lutron shipped with the drive.
- The copy you will be offered
- Printed or cast crown and drive sets sold "for Somfy 50", generic motor brackets, a plate cut in a workshop.
- What goes wrong, and where the warranty goes
- The crown rides on the motor's limit ring and the drive on its output shaft. A copy that is a fraction loose lets the tube wobble, loads the motor head, and lets the limits drift because the tube no longer follows the motor exactly. Somfy's five years cover the motor, not the tube or anyone else's hardware around it, and the copy is a "combination ... not provided or authorized in writing by SOMFY".
See: Somfy crowns and drives · Somfy motor and idler brackets
Batteries, wands, chargers and power supplies #
- The original
- Somfy's USB-C external packs and internal headrail batteries with Somfy's chargers, and the 12 V and 24 V supplies matched to each motor; Lutron's power supplies and panels.
- The copy you will be offered
- A no-name lithium wand or pack, a "universal" charger, a plug-in 24 V supply from a parts bin.
- What goes wrong, and where the warranty goes
- Somfy excludes batteries other than its own branded packs and "any other equipment, components, or devices used in conjunction". A wrong-voltage or unregulated supply on a 24 V DC motor, or a charger that does not match the pack, is exactly the "damage caused by" case the law lets a maker refuse. A lithium pack with no maker's name on it, charging behind a headrail in a bedroom, is also a safety question before it is a warranty one.
See: Somfy Li-ion batteries and chargers · Somfy power supplies
Repairs #
- The original
- A failed motor goes back through the dealer and Somfy or Lutron repairs or replaces it.
- The copy you will be offered
- A motor opened on a bench, a replacement head from a marketplace, a "reconditioned" unit.
- What goes wrong, and where the warranty goes
- "Opened, dismantled or returned with evidence of abuse" and "unauthorized repair" end Somfy's coverage; "unauthorized repairs or adjustments or alterations" end Lutron's. One outside repair takes the warranty off the rest of the motor's life, and the repaired unit carries only the repairer's word.
Fabric and system hardware #
- The original
- Mermet, Phifer, Lutron and the other mills' fabrics with their own interior warranties, fascia and hardware from the system's maker.
- The copy you will be offered
- A "3 percent screen" or "blackout" with no mill named, hardware from a different system bolted to the same shade.
- What goes wrong, and where the warranty goes
- Fabric is the part you look at every day. A copy's fade, curl or delamination is the seller's problem, not a mill's, and a mill's published terms are what a named fabric brings. Same test as the motor: whose name is on it, and whose paper comes with it.

What happens when a motor stops, with and without a copy in the system #
Both paths start with the same phone call. They end very differently.
Original parts, bought and installed by one authorized dealer
- You call the dealer. The dealer bought the motor, so the claim is theirs to file.
- The date code or ship date is checked against the term. Somfy: five years from the stamp on the motor. Lutron: eight years from shipment, with the credit schedule after year five.
- The motor goes back and the maker repairs or replaces it. Somfy "through your end product supplier"; Lutron by repair or credit toward a replacement.
- The dealer takes the shade down, fits the part, reprograms and rehangs. That visit is never the maker's; it is between you and the dealer, which is what the installation layer is for (what each layer covers).
A copy in the system, or an original from a marketplace
- You call whoever sold it. If it was a storefront, the conversation is with a storefront.
- The maker sees the history. A non-approved relay or charger on the motor, a copy crown on the shaft, a third-party seller on the invoice, an opened housing: each one is a clause on this page.
- The claim is refused, or argued over causation. Federal law lets the maker refuse damage the copy caused; you are the one showing it did not.
- You pay the part, the freight and the visit, and the copy's own seller owes you nothing a maker would owe. The shade is down for the duration.
Three questions to ask before you sign any quote. (1) Name every part by maker and part number: motor, controls, brackets, crown and drive, power supply or battery and charger. "Somfy motor" is not an answer; "Sonesse 30 RTS 24 V DC with Somfy's 24 V supply, Somfy brackets, crown and drive" is. (2) Where were they bought, and who is the original purchaser on the warranty? Ask for the date code or ship date at handover. (3) Who files a claim in year three, and who pays for the visit? Get both answers in writing with the quote.
How we keep the makers' coverage intact #
Our practice What we do on every motorized shade and track, so that the warranty on the quote is the one you actually have.
- Original parts through the maker's channel. Somfy through Somfy's distribution, as a certified Somfy Expert and SDN Specialist; Lutron as a Lutron Certified Dealer; Crestron the same way. Somfy's warranty is given to the end product supplier, which is us, so the clock and the claim are ours to manage, and we are the ones who file it.
- Every quote names the motor by model, and the parts around it are the maker's. Brackets, crowns, drives, power supplies, batteries, chargers and controls carry the same name as the motor. Nothing on a Somfy motor is printed, cast or "compatible".
- A tight budget gets a different motor, not a copy. When Somfy or Lutron is more than a room needs, we quote Essential under its own name, with its own maker's terms, and say what it gives up. We never put a clone inside a Somfy or Lutron system to hit a number.
- Integration through the makers' own interfaces. Somfy's RTS receivers, dry-contact interfaces, relays and SDN; Lutron's hubs and processors; Crestron's own modules. Never a marketplace relay on a 120 V motor. How Somfy integrates.
- Pockets the motor can be reached through. Lutron's warranty ends where Lutron cannot inspect the part, and every motor needs service eventually, so a recessed pocket is specified with access to the drive.
- Installed and programmed by our own team, never subcontracted. The company that bought the parts is the company that installed them and the one you call, and the terms of the installation and of each maker come in writing with the quote (what each one covers).
Original vs generic parts: questions
Does using a non-Somfy part void the Somfy warranty? #
Somfy's published terms exclude damage from modifications, combination or use with any products not provided or authorized in writing by Somfy, from electrical accessories such as switches and relays not approved in writing by its engineering department, and from unauthorized repair, and they exclude batteries other than Somfy's own. Federal law adds a limit: under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act a maker cannot refuse a consumer warranty simply because a non-brand part was used, unless it supplies that part free or holds an FTC waiver, but it can refuse to cover damage the part caused. In practice the argument becomes whether the copy caused the failure, you are the one making the case, the copy itself is covered by nobody but its seller, and no labor is covered either way.
Is a Somfy motor bought on Amazon or eBay covered by Somfy's warranty? #
Not under Somfy's terms. Its Terms of Sale say the limited warranty does not cover any products purchased from third party sellers who may, for example, sell products on sites such as eBay or Amazon, and Somfy's consumer store terms repeat it. The five years also run from the date stamped on the motor, so stock that sat on a shelf arrives with part of its term used up. Buying directly from Somfy's own store starts five years from the date of purchase; buying through a Somfy Expert puts the claim with the dealer that built the shade.
Will a Somfy-compatible remote damage my motor? #
A clone remote is unlikely to damage a motor by itself. It is still an electrical accessory Somfy has not approved in writing, so the limits it sets and the pairing it holds are unsupported, and if the motor later fails the history of a non-approved control is part of the claim. A genuine Situo RTS remote through an authorized dealer costs little against the motor it runs, which is why we do not see the saving.
Can I use a generic charger or battery wand on a Somfy WireFree motor? #
Somfy's warranty does not apply to batteries other than Somfy's own branded embedded and external rechargeable packs, and it does not cover any other equipment or devices used in conjunction with Somfy products. A charger that does not match the pack or a wand at the wrong voltage can damage the motor's charging circuit, and that is the kind of damage a maker may refuse under federal law. Somfy's current motors use USB-C packs and chargers that are sold as spare parts; use those.
Are generic crown and drive sets or brackets a problem? #
They are the parts most often copied because they look simple. The crown sits on the motor's limit ring and the drive on its output shaft, and both must match the tube's diameter and profile exactly. A copy that is slightly loose lets the tube wobble and the limits drift, and loads the motor head. Somfy covers the motor, not the hardware someone else made for it, and a copy falls under its clause on combination or use with products not provided or authorized in writing by Somfy.
Does the same apply to Lutron shades? #
Lutron's Shading Solutions Eight Year Limited Warranty covers the electronic drive unit, shade fabric and shade hardware for eight years from the date Lutron shipped them, with wall controls, interfaces and accessories at one year, and it excludes incorrect installation, use of incompatible devices or accessories, unauthorized repairs or adjustments or alterations, and on-site labor. Lutron shades run on Lutron's own radio and are sold through its dealers, so the risks arrive differently: third-party integration hardware, outside repairs, and parts from unauthorized sellers, which Lutron reserves the right to reject claims on. Coverage also ends where Lutron cannot inspect or repair a part, so a recessed pocket needs access.
Is it legal for a manufacturer to require its own parts? #
Generally not, in a consumer warranty. The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, 15 U.S.C. 2302(c), says a warrantor may not condition its warranty on the consumer using any article or service identified by brand name, unless that article or service is provided free under the warranty or the FTC has granted a waiver. The FTC has said it is permissible to disclaim coverage for defects or damage caused by the use of parts or service the maker did not provide. So the maker cannot void the warranty because a copy was present; it can refuse the damage the copy caused. This page explains the documents; it is not legal advice.
Who files the warranty claim, me or the installer? #
For Somfy, the warranty extends only to the original purchaser, the end product supplier that bought the motor from Somfy and built the shade, and Somfy repairs or replaces through that supplier. For Lutron, claims run through the dealer. In both cases the maker covers the part and not the labor, so the company that installed the shade is the one you call, and you want it to be the same company that bought the parts.
Is a budget motor like Dooya a generic copy? #
No. A motor sold under its own maker's name, with its own maker's terms and documentation, is a different product chosen with open eyes, not a copy of someone else's. Our Essential motorized curtain track runs on Dooya motors and says so on its page; it carries less, runs louder and integrates less deeply than Somfy, and it is the right answer for guest rooms, rentals and offices. The problem this page describes is the part that borrows a brand's name or system without the brand behind it.
How do I check whether my shades were built with original parts? #
Look at the label on the motor head for the maker's name, model and date code; Somfy stamps the date it warrants from. Read the quote or invoice for part numbers rather than brand names alone. The remote should carry the maker's model name, and the brackets, crown and drive should match the maker's parts for that motor and tube. If you are not sure, we can look during a service visit and tell you what is there.
