A technical screen is specified by its numbers. A decorative screen is specified because of how it looks in the room, and then checked against its numbers. Mermet groups 79 colourways in 4 designs here: the three Deco cards, which take the E Screen, M Screen and T Screen constructions and weave them in bicolour yarns, and S Screen with S Screen Naturals, which are built from wrapped yarn bundles and read as a coarse natural textile rather than a screen. All of them are vinyl-coated fiberglass, all carry NFPA 701 TM#1, California Title 19 and CAN/ULC-S109, GREENGUARD Gold and RoHS lead free.
E Screen Deco is the 2x2 basketweave at 1% and 3%, 122 inches, in ten colours named for timber, from Balsa and Birch through Willow and Elm to Mahogany and Ebony. M Screen Deco is the rib weave at 3% and 5%, 98 inches, in seven stone and earth tones. T Screen Deco is the satin at 1%, 3% and 5%, 122 inches, in five coffee tones with a white street side, which is why it reflects 49% to 68% of the solar energy that reaches it. S Screen is the heavy one: 19.1 oz per square yard at 1%, 122 inches, ten colours, with Naturals adding ten more at 5%.

The five cards
E Screen Deco
1% and 3%, 122 inches, ten timber names: Balsa, Birch, Poplar, Cedar, Willow, Magnolia, Aspen, Elm, Mahogany, Ebony. Bicolour yarn in the same basketweave as standard E Screen, so it performs like a technical screen and looks like a woven one. Visible transmission 2% to 19%, solar reflectance 5% to 73%.
M Screen Deco
3% and 5%, 98 inches, seven colours: Parchment, Naturelle, River Rock, Tumbleweed, Flagstone, Hazelnut, Harvest. The rib weave with a bicolour yarn, warmer than any other Mermet card and the natural partner to travertine, wood ceilings and pale oak.
T Screen Deco
1%, 3% and 5%, 122 inches, five coffee tones: Cream, Cappuccino, Toffee, Mocha, Espresso. The satin weave with a white street side, so the room gets a warm face and the building keeps a pale, uniform facade. Every colour has a photograph of its reverse face on the page.
S Screen
1% and 4%, 122 inches, ten colours from Porcelain and Marble to Granite and Peppercorn. Wrapped yarn bundles in a plain weave make it the heaviest fabric in the library, 19.1 oz per square yard and 0.041 inches thick at 1%, with a hand closer to a linen than to a screen.
S Screen Naturals
5%, 98 inches, ten colours named for mountains: Pyrenees, Denali, Matterhorn, Sierra, Appalachian, Olympus, Cascade, Rainier, Shasta, Everest. A fancy weave over the same wrapped bundles, lighter at 15 oz, with visible transmission of 9% to 18%, so the view stays open.
Choosing a decorative screen for a South Florida room
These fabrics are for the rooms where the shade is on show: a living room with exposed rollers, a study with one large window, a bedroom where the shade is the only soft surface. The test we apply is the same as for any screen. What is the exposure, what openness does it need, and how wide is the glass. M Screen Deco and S Screen Naturals are 98 inches wide, so a wide slider takes two shades on one headrail; E Screen Deco, T Screen Deco and S Screen are 122.

Do decorative screens perform like the plain ones?
Yes, within their openness. E Screen Deco is the same basketweave construction as E Screen, M Screen Deco the same rib weave as M Screen, T Screen Deco the same satin as T Screen, all in 36% fiberglass and 64% vinyl with the same fire listings. What changes is the yarn and therefore the colour and the texture, and with them the published Tv, Ts, Rs and As, which the tables show colour by colour.
Which decorative screen is the most textural?
S Screen. Its wrapped yarn bundles make the heaviest cloth in the library, 19.1 oz per square yard and 0.041 inches thick at 1%, with the hand of a coarse natural textile. S Screen Naturals is the lighter, more open version at 5%, in ten colours named for mountains, and it lets noticeably more light and view through.
Are the decorative weaves fire rated?
All five carry NFPA 701 TM#1, California Title 19 and CAN/ULC-S109, with GREENGUARD Gold, RoHS lead free and bacterial and fungal resistance tested to ASTM E2180 and ASTM G21. They can go into commercial and hospitality work on the same paperwork as the plain screens.
How wide can these shades be?
E Screen Deco, T Screen Deco and S Screen come 122 inches wide; M Screen Deco and S Screen Naturals 98. On a wide slider that difference decides whether the opening is one shade or two on a shared headrail, so we check the fabric width before we shortlist a colour.
