Mermet Fabric Library

A wrapped-yarn screen with the hand of a natural textile

S Screen is the heaviest fabric in the Mermet library and the one that looks least like a technical screen. It is built from wrapped yarn bundles in a plain weave, 33.6% fiberglass and 59.6% vinyl, 122 inches wide, and it weighs 19.1 oz per square yard at 0.041 inches thick in the 1% weave. It comes at 1% and 4% in ten colours named for materials rather than shades: Porcelain, Marble, Seasalt, Jute, Cork, Papyrus, Nougat, Ginger, Granite and Peppercorn. Visible transmission runs 3% to 10% and solar reflectance 31% to 63%, so it is a genuine glare fabric with a textile surface.

S Screen Naturals is the second half of this page: the same wrapped bundles in a fancy weave at 5% openness, 98 inches wide and lighter at 15 oz per square yard, in ten colours named for mountains from Pyrenees and Denali to Shasta and Everest. Visible transmission of 9% to 18% makes it the most open fabric of the two, and the one to specify where the view matters as much as the texture. Both carry NFPA 701 TM#1, California Title 19 and CAN/ULC-S109, GREENGUARD Gold and RoHS lead free.

Tv = visible light transmitted, Ts = solar energy transmitted, Rs = solar energy reflected, As = solar energy absorbed, Rv = visible light reflected, in percent, as published by Mermet USA for the fabric on its own. SHGC int. and SHGC ext. = solar heat gain coefficient of the fabric mounted inside or outside residential double glazing, from the same spec sheets; UPF = Mermet's ultraviolet protection rating where it publishes one. We bring the sample books to the consultation.

Where S Screen works here

S Screen goes into rooms where the roller is exposed and the fabric has to hold its own against the furniture: Miami Beach and Palm Beach living rooms, studies with one large window, and any interior built around limestone, rattan and pale wood. We hold the 1% weave for hard exposures and use S Screen Naturals at 5% on shaded or covered glass where the point is the texture and the daylight rather than the glare.

S Screen is the textile end of the screen range: E Screen and M Screen are lighter technical weaves, and the Deco cards get their character from bicolour yarn rather than from the yarn bundle itself.

Good to Know

S Screen: frequently asked

Is S Screen a solar screen or a decorative fabric?

Both, which is the point. Mermet lists it as a decorative weave, but it is vinyl-coated fiberglass with published openness, light and solar figures like any screen: 1% and 4% on S Screen and 5% on Naturals, with visible transmission from 3% to 18% across the two cards. It is specified for the cloth and then checked against the numbers.

Why is it so much heavier than E Screen?

The wrapped yarn bundles. At 19.1 oz per square yard and 0.041 inches thick, S Screen is roughly half again as heavy as a 1% E Screen, which is what gives it the hand of a coarse linen. On a tall shade that weight hangs flat, and it also means a slightly larger roll on the tube, which we allow for in the pocket.

How wide can a Mermet S Screen shade be?

Mermet publishes standard roll widths of 122" (310 cm); 98" (250 cm) for S Screen, so a single shade can run to about 122 inches wide before a seam or a second shade is needed. Wider openings are covered with two shades on one headrail programmed to move together, or with a seam placed where the mullion hides it. We confirm the exact limit for the chosen system when we measure.

Which shades can be made in S Screen?

S Screen is a roller shade fabric. We source it directly from Mermet, so the same weave goes on Lutron, Somfy, Crestron or Vertilux motors or a manual chain, cut and finished in our Fort Lauderdale workroom and installed by our own team from Miami to Palm Beach.

Can I see S Screen samples before ordering?

Yes. We keep the Mermet sample books in the Fort Lauderdale workroom (4539 Powerline Rd, by appointment) and the Miami Beach showroom (500 South Pointe Dr #150), and we bring the colours you shortlist to the in-home consultation so you can hold them against your glass in your own light.
