A reinforced-core basketweave rated for outside the glass

Natté is one of two Mermet weaves rated for exterior use as well as interior work. It is a basketweave in 42% fiberglass and 58% vinyl, more fiberglass than the 36% in E Screen, woven 122 inches wide at 3%, 5% and 10% and weighing 13.5 to 16.4 oz per square yard. The twelve colours are two-tone and mostly dark, which is what an exterior shade wants: Charcoal with Charcoal, Charcoal-Navy, Cocoa, Cocoa-Fawn, Forest or Garnet, Grey with Charcoal, Grey or Sable, and Sable with Sable-Fog, White or Wood.

It is also the one family where Mermet publishes an ultraviolet protection rating per colourway, Excellent or Very Good across most of the card, alongside UV blockage of about 97% at 3%, 95% at 5% and 90% at 10%. Solar figures range from Sable/White, which reflects 52%, to Charcoal/Forest, which absorbs 92%. The 3% weave reaches NRC 0.25. Fire listings are NFPA 701 TM#1, California Title 19 and CAN/ULC-S109, with GREENGUARD Gold, RoHS lead free and bacterial and fungal resistance tested to ASTM E2180 and ASTM G21.

Tv = visible light transmitted, Ts = solar energy transmitted, Rs = solar energy reflected, As = solar energy absorbed, Rv = visible light reflected, in percent, as published by Mermet USA for the fabric on its own. SHGC int. and SHGC ext. = solar heat gain coefficient of the fabric mounted inside or outside residential double glazing, from the same spec sheets; UPF = Mermet's ultraviolet protection rating where it publishes one. We bring the sample books to the consultation.

Where Natté works here

Natté goes on terraces, balconies and pool decks from Fort Lauderdale to Golden Beach, on a motorized outdoor shade running in side tracks, usually at 5% or 10% so the breeze still moves through and the shade takes less wind load. On a west-facing lanai we drop to 3%, where the sun rather than the view is the problem. Indoors it behaves like a heavy dark screen, and the extra weight hangs flat on a tall window.

Natté is the open, two-tone exterior basketweave in twelve colours; Satiné is the denser twill in four charcoals at 1% and 5%, for the same exterior duty with more glare control.

Good to Know

Natté: frequently asked

Can Natté be used indoors?

Yes. Mermet rates it for interior and exterior use, and indoors it behaves like a heavy, dense screen at the same openness. The reason to choose it inside is the weight and the dark two-tone card; the reason to choose it outside is that it is built for weather.

Which openness on an open terrace?

5% or 10%. An exterior shade on an open terrace has to live with wind, and a more open weave both lets air through and keeps the view out to the water. Keep 3% for a hard west exposure where cutting the sun is the whole job.

What does the UPF rating mean here?

It is Mermet's ultraviolet protection rating for the fabric, published colour by colour on Natté and shown in the table on this page. Most of the card rates Excellent or Very Good. It sits alongside the UV blockage figure, which is about 97% at 3% and 90% at 10%.

How wide can a Mermet Natté shade be?

Mermet publishes standard roll widths of 122" (310 cm) for Natté, so a single shade can run to about 122 inches wide before a seam or a second shade is needed. Wider openings are covered with two shades on one headrail programmed to move together, or with a seam placed where the mullion hides it. We confirm the exact limit for the chosen system when we measure.

Which shades can be made in Natté?

Natté is a roller shade fabric. We source it directly from Mermet, so the same weave goes on Lutron, Somfy, Crestron or Vertilux motors or a manual chain, cut and finished in our Fort Lauderdale workroom and installed by our own team from Miami to Palm Beach.

Can I see Natté samples before ordering?

Yes. We keep the Mermet sample books in the Fort Lauderdale workroom (4539 Powerline Rd, by appointment) and the Miami Beach showroom (500 South Pointe Dr #150), and we bring the colours you shortlist to the in-home consultation so you can hold them against your glass in your own light.
