Handsome Plaid is one of the Holland & Sherry cloths we make up as draperies: a mélange wool plaid in their 9-10 Savile Row collection (100% wool, 59 in wide, made in Chile). The range runs to 5 colourways: Natural, Cobalt, Navy, Mallard and Rust Teal. Their spec sheet gives its end use as "Upholstery, drapery, accessories, soft goods and wall upholstery".
At 59 in it is cut up the roll like a conventional drapery cloth: a wide panel is made of joined widths, with each seam hidden inside a pleat or a ripplefold wave. Holland & Sherry give the repeat as 3.82 in across, 4.09 in down; we match it across every seam and from window to window, which adds yardage and is figured into the order.
Wool is naturally flame resistant but not sun resistant: it fades and weakens in direct sun, so it is lined, and on unshaded south or west glass it wants a solar shade in front of it. It can stretch a little over time in humid air, and like silk it is a protein fibre that wants an air-conditioned room rather than a house closed up for the summer (what each fibre does). It weighs 17 oz per linear yard (530 g per linear metre) by Holland & Sherry's figures.
Their drapery note advises hanging the drapery before it is hemmed, so the cloth settles to the room, and lining every drapery, to block the light and protect the face.

Best use
We would make Handsome Plaid up as tailored panels, pinch pleat or ripplefold, lined, for a bedroom, a study or a living room that wants the warmth of a suiting cloth.
Light and privacy
An opaque cloth, so privacy is complete when it is closed. The lining sets the light: a light-filtering sateen keeps a room glowing, an interlining adds body and quiet, a blackout lining turns a bedroom dark (lining guide).

Limitations
Not for unshaded south or west glass on its own: the sun fades natural fibres, so a shade goes in front of it there. At 59 in a wide panel is made of joined widths, and the repeat is matched at every seam, which costs yardage. No NFPA 701 result in Holland & Sherry's data, so a condo common area or a commercial job that asks for it needs the cloth flame treated with a certificate, if Holland & Sherry can supply it that way, or another cloth.

We measure and give the yardage
We measure the windows, settle the style, the fullness and the lining, and work out the yardage on the width and the repeat, so the order to Holland & Sherry is right the first time.
We make and install
The cloth comes to our Fort Lauderdale workroom, where our five in-house seamstresses cut and sew the draperies, and our own installers hang them on the rod, track or motorized system the window calls for.
