Holland & Sherry Relay
Wool sateen, 4 colourways, 100% wool, 59 in wide. Holland & Sherry's own figures, and how we make it up as draperies in our Fort Lauderdale workroom, from the cloth your designer orders.
Wool sateen, 59 in wide, in 4 colourways
Holland & Sherry make Relay as a wool sateen, in their Sporting Collection (100% wool, 59 in wide, made in Chile). The range runs to 4 colourways: Baton Blue, Seal Brown, Paddock and Field & Stream. Their spec sheet gives its end use as "Upholstery, drapery, wall upholstery, soft goods, and accessories".
At 59 in it is cut up the roll like a conventional drapery cloth: a wide panel is made of joined widths, with each seam hidden inside a pleat or a ripplefold wave. Holland & Sherry's sheet gives the direction as up the roll. The repeat is 9.21 in across, matched at every seam and across the windows of a room, so the yardage is worked out on the repeat rather than the finished size.
Wool brings weight, a soft hand and quiet, and it resists flame on its own; what it does not resist is the sun, which fades and weakens it, so it wants a lining and, on bright south and west glass, a shade in front of it. In a lived-in, air-conditioned house it is at home; in a house shut up for the summer, humidity is its risk (curtain fabric types). It weighs 18 oz per linear yard (570 g per linear metre) by Holland & Sherry's figures.
Their drapery note advises hanging the drapery before it is hemmed, so the cloth settles to the room, and lining every drapery, to block the light and protect the face.

What Relay does at the window, and what it does not
Best use
Relay is a tailored drapery cloth: pinch pleat, Euro pleat or ripplefold panels in a study, a bedroom or a living room, lined, on a decorative rod or a track.
Light and privacy
An opaque cloth, so privacy is complete when it is closed. The lining sets the light: a light-filtering sateen keeps a room glowing, an interlining adds body and quiet, a blackout lining turns a bedroom dark (lining guide).
Cloth and care
100% wool; 18 oz per linear yard (570 g per linear metre); Martindale 15,000 rubs.
Limitations
Not for unshaded south or west glass on its own: the sun fades natural fibres, so a shade goes in front of it there. At 59 in a wide panel is made of joined widths, and the repeat is matched at every seam, which costs yardage. No NFPA 701 result in Holland & Sherry's data, so a condo common area or a commercial job that asks for it needs the cloth flame treated with a certificate, if Holland & Sherry can supply it that way, or another cloth.

End use, in their words
"Upholstery, drapery, wall upholstery, soft goods, and accessories", from Holland & Sherry's spec sheet.
Their drapery note
Drapery should hang before it is hemmed, so it can adjust to the climate of the room; every drapery should be lined, to block light and protect the face.
Fabric direction
Holland & Sherry's sheet gives the direction as up the roll.
Flame tests
NFPA 701, the drapery flame test: not listed; upholstery tests on the sheet: BS 5852 Cigarette & Match Pass; Cal 117-2013 Pass.

How Relay becomes draperies in your home
Your designer specifies
Holland & Sherry sell to the trade, so the cloth is chosen and ordered by your designer, with the colour code and the sample in hand. Not working with a designer? Tell us; we can suggest a cloth we order ourselves.
We measure and give the yardage
We measure the windows, settle the style, the fullness and the lining, and work out the yardage on the width and the repeat, so the order to Holland & Sherry is right the first time.
We make and install
The cloth comes to our Fort Lauderdale workroom, where our five in-house seamstresses cut and sew the draperies, and our own installers hang them on the rod, track or motorized system the window calls for.
Where Relay works here
We have made Holland & Sherry wool up before: at the Ritz-Carlton Residences Miami Beach the designer's schedule called for two Holland & Sherry wool jacquards, made up as blackout drapery on Lutron Sivoia QS tracks, the reversible flannel hung with its lighter face outward as specified. Relay would be made the same way: lined, for an air-conditioned room, with a shade in front of it on bright glass.
For the same use, compare Relay with Ace (wool flannel, 59 in, 15 colourways), Blazer Stripe (wool flannel, 59 in, 5 colourways) and Fair Isle (lambswool Fair Isle, 57 in, 4 colourways).

Relay: frequently asked
How many colours does Holland & Sherry Relay come in?
4 colourways on Holland & Sherry's site when we read it on October 7, 2026: Baton Blue, Seal Brown, Paddock and Field & Stream. Every one is listed on this page with its code; Holland & Sherry's photographs of each are on their own site, linked from the table.
Can I buy Relay from you?
No. Holland & Sherry sell to the trade, so your designer orders the cloth from them. We make it up and install it: we measure and work out the yardage, the cloth is sent to our Fort Lauderdale workroom, and our seamstresses cut and sew the draperies.
Does Relay need a lining?
Holland & Sherry say every drapery should be lined, to block the light and protect the face, and we agree. The lining is chosen for the room: a light-filtering sateen for a living room, an interlining for body and quiet, a blackout lining for a bedroom (lining guide).
Do you match the Relay repeat?
Always. Holland & Sherry give the repeat as 9.21 in across; we match it at every seam and from window to window, so the yardage your designer orders is worked out on the repeat.
What does Relay cost made up as draperies?
The cloth is bought through your designer at Holland & Sherry's price, so our quote covers what we make and install: the fabrication, the lining, the track or rod and the installation, worked out from the measure. Ask for a workroom price with the button above and we come back with a figure, not a range.
