A textured light-filtering cloth in five neutrals, from White to Anthracite

Flamenco is a light-filtering roller fabric from TOP Window Covering with a textured face: 100% polyester with a heat-set finish, 0.42 mm thick and 170 g/m2, on a 280 cm roll (110 inches). On the window the texture shows up against the light, which gives the shade the look of a woven textile. There are five colours: White, Ivory, Light Gray, Gray and Anthracite. It suits a bedroom, a study or a dining room where the shade should look like fabric and the light should stay gentle.

TOP's figures run from 5.1% visible transmission in Anthracite to 32.4% in Ivory, so the card goes from a dim room to a bright one, with Gray at 10.4% and Light Gray at 19.4% between. The pale colours send most of the sun's energy back out: White reflects 64.2%. Dark does not mean cool here, though: Anthracite still passes 19.7% of the sun's energy and absorbs 41.8%. TOP does not list Flamenco for humid rooms, although it does list fungal resistance.

Best Use & Limits

What Flamenco does on your glass, and what it does not

Best use

Bedrooms, studies, dining rooms and family rooms where a textured shade suits the room and the windows are away from showers and steam. White or Ivory on north and east glass, Light Gray or Gray on south and west, Anthracite for a dim study or a room with a television. Choose it for texture and soft light; choose something else for a bathroom.

Privacy

By day the room is hidden in all five colours. At night a lit room shows through as a glow, with shadows on the cloth; White and Ivory, which pass about a third of the light, show them most, and Anthracite gives the least away. For a bedroom, add a blackout on a dual roller.

Glare control

Anthracite and Gray, at 5.1% and 10.4% visible transmission, keep a television or a monitor readable through a sunny afternoon, and Light Gray is fine for a laptop. White and Ivory soften the sky but become bright panels themselves, which a screen facing the window will show. When a low sun lines up with the glass, every colour lights up.

Limitations

No view, no darkness and no fire listing, and TOP does not list it for humid rooms, so it is not for a bathroom, a hotel room or a media room that must go black. A dark colour is not a heat fix on west glass, since Anthracite still lets a fifth of the sun's energy through. For a bathroom, take Orient (XXL), which TOP lists for humid rooms.

South Florida

Where Flamenco works here

Flamenco suits a South Florida bedroom, study or dining room away from the baths: Light Gray or Gray on east and south glass, White or Ivory on the north side, Anthracite where a television needs a dim wall. We make each shade in our Fort Lauderdale workroom on a Lutron, Somfy or Crestron motor or a chain.

Twinlight Flamenco is the same five colours as a zebra fabric with sheer bands that open to the view; this roller cloth filters the whole window evenly, so the outside stays out of sight whenever it is down.

Good to Know

Flamenco: frequently asked

White or Ivory?

They behave almost the same. Ivory passes 32.4% of the visible light and White 31%, and White reflects a little more of the sun's energy, 64.2% against 60.8%. Choose on tone: White looks crisper beside white trim and walls, Ivory sits better with warm wood and cream.

Is Anthracite dark enough for a bedroom?

Not on its own. It passes 5.1% of the visible light, which gives a dim room by day, and a roller also lets light in down both sides. For sleep, put a blackout behind it; for a nap room or a study, Anthracite alone is usually enough.

How wide can a roller shade in TOP Flamenco be?

TOP makes Flamenco in a 280 cm (110 in) roll. The roll width is the widest single piece we can cut, so one roller shade can be made a little under 110 inches wide. Wider openings get two roller shades side by side, set to move together, or a split placed where a mullion hides it. We confirm the exact limit for the operating system when we measure.

Which shades can be made in Flamenco?

Flamenco is a roller shade fabric. We buy it from TOP Window Covering by the roll and make the shades ourselves in our Fort Lauderdale workroom: cut square, finished with a weighted hem bar and fitted to a Lutron, Somfy or Crestron motor or a manual chain, then installed by our own team from Miami to Palm Beach.

Can I see Flamenco samples before ordering?

Yes. Shortlist the colours here and we bring TOP samples of them to the in-home consultation, so you can hold them against your own glass in your own light. Our Fort Lauderdale workroom (4539 Powerline Rd, by appointment) and Miami Beach showroom (500 South Pointe Dr #150) have motorized shades running if you want to see one move.
