Five plain neutrals in a thick white-backed blackout, 110 inches wide

Milan Blackout White Backing is a short card from TOP Window Covering: five neutrals, White, Cream, Stone, Dark Gray and Anthracite, on a 100% polyester blackout with an acrylic foam coating and a white back. At 0.67 mm and 380 g/m2 it is one of the thicker cloths among TOP's blackout rollers, and the roll is 280 cm, about 110 inches. On the window it reads as a solid panel of colour inside and a white shade from outside. It is for bedrooms, bathrooms and media rooms in a white, stone and charcoal interior.

The decision is short because the card is. Anthracite or Dark Gray suit a media room or a bedroom that should feel dark as well as be dark; White or Cream suit a room that should stay bright under lamps. TOP lists Milan as suitable for humid environments, so a bathroom is fine. TOP publishes no optical figures for it and rates its light-fastness at 4, at the low end of its blackouts. The thickness is the other cost: a tall drop rolls large.

Best Use & Limits

What Milan Blackout does on your glass, and what it does not

Best use

Bedrooms, bathrooms and media rooms in a white, stone and charcoal interior, on windows up to about 110 inches. Take Anthracite or Dark Gray where the shade should disappear at night, White or Cream where the room should feel open. If one of the five fits the scheme, the short card makes the choice quick; if none does, look at Sorrento. For a gray-and-white house, choose Milan.

Privacy

The fabric hides the room at all hours in every colour; that is the blackout class, though TOP publishes no transmission figures for Milan. The edges are the weak point: after dark a lit room shows a thin line of light down each side of a roller. Side channels, or a recessed pocket at the head, close it.

Glare control

Down, it takes away glare and daylight together, which is what a media room wants and what a home office does not. Without published figures, the blackout class is the guide. Where the sun sits low in the window, the gaps at the sides glow first, and channels deal with that.

Limitations

No view, no daylight, no fire listing, and no optical figures to put in a specification. At 0.67 mm a long drop builds a fat roll that a shallow pocket may not take. Where the pocket is tight, the thinner Riva Blackout White Backing is the answer, on the same 280 cm roll.

Where Milan Blackout White Backing works here

Milan fits a Miami or Fort Lauderdale condo where the interior is white, stone and charcoal and the building wants white at the glass. At about 110 inches it covers most bedroom windows in one piece, on a Lutron or Somfy motor. We check the pocket depth before ordering a tall shade. For a lobby or a corridor we move to TOP's flame-retardant contract fabrics, since Milan carries no fire listing.

Sorrento Blackout White Backing is the nearest match in build, white-backed on the same 280 cm roll at almost the same thickness, with nineteen colours where Milan has five.

Good to Know

Milan Blackout White Backing: frequently asked

Milan or Sorrento?

They are close in build: both are white-backed blackouts on a 280 cm roll at nearly the same thickness. Sorrento has nineteen colours, a higher light-fastness rating and TOP's workstation listing; Milan has five neutrals. If one of Milan's five is the colour you want, it is the simpler choice; if not, Sorrento's card is where to look.

Can it go in a bathroom?

Yes. TOP lists Milan as suitable for humid environments, with a damp cloth for care. The white back keeps a bathroom window matching the rest of the building from outside, and side channels stop the strip of light at the edges that a bathroom on a walkway would otherwise show at night.

How wide can a roller shade in TOP Milan Blackout White Backing be?

TOP makes Milan Blackout White Backing in a 280 cm (110 in) roll. The roll width is the widest single piece we can cut, so one roller shade can be made a little under 110 inches wide. A seam in a blackout shows as a line of light, so wider openings get two shades side by side, set to move together. We confirm the exact limit for the operating system when we measure.

Which shades can be made in Milan Blackout White Backing?

Milan Blackout White Backing is a roller shade fabric. We buy it from TOP Window Covering by the roll and make the shades ourselves in our Fort Lauderdale workroom: cut square, finished with a weighted hem bar and fitted to a Lutron, Somfy or Crestron motor or a manual chain, then installed by our own team from Miami to Palm Beach.

Can I see Milan Blackout White Backing samples before ordering?

Yes. Shortlist the colours here and we bring TOP samples of them to the in-home consultation, so you can hold them against your own glass in your own light. Our Fort Lauderdale workroom (4539 Powerline Rd, by appointment) and Miami Beach showroom (500 South Pointe Dr #150) have motorized shades running if you want to see one move.
