Four grays on a 118-inch blackout roll, the night half of a Palermo pair

Palermo Blackout White Backing is the blackout version of TOP Window Covering's Palermo, a lightly textured weave in four colours: White, Light Gray, Mid Gray and Dark Gray, each with a white back. It is 100% polyester with an acrylic foam coating, 0.69 mm thick and 350 g/m2, on a 300 cm roll, about 118 inches. On the window it reads as an even gray panel with a little surface interest, rather than a flat coated shade. It is for bedrooms and media rooms in a gray scheme, and for wide openings that should take one piece.

Light Gray is the one colour TOP publishes figures for: Tv 0, Ts 0 and solar reflectance of 70%, so no light passes and seven tenths of the sun's energy goes back out through the glass. White, Mid Gray and Dark Gray have no published rows. With four colours, the choice is how dark the room should feel: White or Light Gray for a bedroom that should stay light under lamps, Dark Gray for a media room. The trade-off is bulk, since a cloth this thick builds a large roll on a tall window.

Best Use & Limits

What Palermo Blackout does on your glass, and what it does not

Best use

Bedrooms and media rooms in a gray-and-white interior, and wide openings up to about 118 inches that should go dark in one shade. Pair it with Palermo Transparent in a bedroom with a view. Choose Light Gray when the specification needs a published heat figure, Dark Gray when the room should feel darkest. For wide glass in a gray scheme, choose Palermo.

Privacy

Day and night the cloth hides the room; in Light Gray, the one colour with published figures, TOP shows no light passing at all. A roller still leaves a narrow gap down each side, and a lit room shows those two lines to the street after dark. Side channels close them.

Glare control

With the shade down there is no glare because there is no daylight, which suits a television room and not a workspace. A low sun square to the window shows first at the side gaps. For daylight with the glare taken off, the transparent Palermo in front does that job on a dual roller.

Limitations

Four colours, all grays, so there is nothing warm on this card: do not buy it for a beige or wood-toned room, where Roma Blackout White Backing carries warmer neutrals at the same width. TOP lists no fire rating and publishes figures for Light Gray only, and at 0.69 mm a tall drop builds a large roll that a shallow pocket may not take.

South Florida

Where Palermo Blackout White Backing works here

On a Miami or Sunny Isles condo with gray glass and white walls, Palermo in Light Gray or Mid Gray is a simple bedroom specification: one 118-inch shade per slider, white at the glass for the association, and a documented heat figure in Light Gray. TOP rates its light-fastness at 6-7, among its best. We confirm the pocket depth before ordering a tall drop.

Palermo Transparent is the same four grays on the same 300 cm roll as a see-through fabric, for the rooms and the hours that should keep the view.

Good to Know

Palermo Blackout White Backing: frequently asked

Can it pair with Palermo Transparent?

Yes. Palermo Transparent has the same four colour names on the same 300 cm roll, so on a dual roller it would hang in front for a softened view by day with this blackout behind for the night. Hold the two samples together first: a see-through weave and a coated blackout never read quite the same on the window.

Which colour keeps a west room coolest?

TOP publishes the figure for Light Gray only: 70% solar reflectance with nothing transmitted. All four share the white back that faces the glass, but we do not attach that number to White, Mid Gray or Dark Gray until TOP publishes theirs. If the heat figure has to appear in a specification, Light Gray is the colour to choose.

How wide can a roller shade in TOP Palermo Blackout White Backing be?

TOP makes Palermo Blackout White Backing in a 300 cm (118 in) roll. The roll width is the widest single piece we can cut, so one roller shade can be made a little under 118 inches wide. A seam in a blackout shows as a line of light, so wider openings get two shades side by side, set to move together. We confirm the exact limit for the operating system when we measure.

Which shades can be made in Palermo Blackout White Backing?

Palermo Blackout White Backing is a roller shade fabric. We buy it from TOP Window Covering by the roll and make the shades ourselves in our Fort Lauderdale workroom: cut square, finished with a weighted hem bar and fitted to a Lutron, Somfy or Crestron motor or a manual chain, then installed by our own team from Miami to Palm Beach.

Can I see Palermo Blackout White Backing samples before ordering?

Yes. Shortlist the colours here and we bring TOP samples of them to the in-home consultation, so you can hold them against your own glass in your own light. Our Fort Lauderdale workroom (4539 Powerline Rd, by appointment) and Miami Beach showroom (500 South Pointe Dr #150) have motorized shades running if you want to see one move.
