The heaviest blackout in TOP's roller line, in seven neutrals with a visible weave

Roma Blackout White Backing is the blackout version of TOP Window Covering's Roma, a weave with real surface texture, in seven colours: Ice White, Off White, Pebble Stone, Brindle, Hickory, Slate and Espresso, each with a white back. It is 100% polyester with an acrylic foam coating, and at 0.7 mm and 435 g/m2 it is the thickest and heaviest of TOP's blackout rollers. The roll is 300 cm, about 118 inches. On the window it reads as a heavy textile rather than a plain shade, which suits a bedroom furnished in wood, stone and linen.

TOP has published one optical row, for Ice White: Tv 0, Ts 0 and solar reflectance of 67.8%, so in that colour no light passes and about two thirds of the sun's energy goes back out through the glass. The other six have no published rows. The choice is mostly the room: Ice White or Off White to keep a bedroom feeling open, Hickory, Slate or Espresso for one that should close down at night. The trade-off is bulk, since this is the cloth most likely to outgrow a shallow pocket on a tall window.

Best Use & Limits

What Roma Blackout does on your glass, and what it does not

Best use

Bedrooms and media rooms with wide openings, and rooms where the shade should look like a heavy textile rather than a plain blind. Pair it with Roma Transparent where the view matters by day. Choose Ice White if a published heat figure is needed, and Hickory, Slate or Espresso for a room meant to feel dark. When width and weight are the brief, choose Roma.

Privacy

The cloth hides the room completely at any hour, and Ice White, the one colour with published figures, shows Tv 0. What gives a bedroom away is the edge of the shade: a lit room shows a thin outline round a roller at night unless it runs in side channels. With channels fitted, nothing reads from the street.

Glare control

Down, it ends glare by ending daylight, so a television or a projector works at noon and a desk does not. Ice White passes none of the sun's energy, by TOP's figures; the other colours have no published rows. A low sun square to the window glows at the side gaps, and channels stop that too.

Limitations

No view, no daylight and no fire rating from TOP, so it is not for a hotel room or a condo corridor. Bulk is the practical limit: the heaviest cloth among TOP's blackout rollers makes the biggest roll, and a shallow existing pocket may not take it. Where the pocket is fixed and tight, take a thinner white-backed card such as Riva.

South Florida

Where Roma Blackout White Backing works here

On a wide bedroom slider in a Boca Raton or Fort Lauderdale house, one 118-inch Roma shade in Brindle or Pebble Stone does what two narrower shades would. TOP rates its light-fastness at 6-7, among the highest of its blackouts, which counts behind South Florida glass. Before ordering we measure the pocket or the headroom, because a tall drop in a 0.7 mm cloth rolls large.

Roma Transparent is the same seven colour names on the same 300 cm roll in a see-through weave, the daytime half of a Roma pair.

Good to Know

Roma Blackout White Backing: frequently asked

Can I pair it with Roma Transparent?

Yes, and it is the best use of the pair. Roma Transparent shares the seven colour names and the 300 cm roll, so on a dual roller it would hang in front to soften the view by day with this blackout behind for the night. They are different cloths, so we compare the two samples together before ordering.

Will the thickness be a problem?

On a tall window, it can be. At 0.7 mm Roma is the thickest of TOP's blackout rollers, so a long drop builds a large roll that needs a deeper pocket or a larger cassette. On an ordinary bedroom window it is not an issue. Where a shallow pocket is already built, a thinner white-backed card is the safer order.

How wide can a roller shade in TOP Roma Blackout White Backing be?

TOP makes Roma Blackout White Backing in a 300 cm (118 in) roll. The roll width is the widest single piece we can cut, so one roller shade can be made a little under 118 inches wide. A seam in a blackout shows as a line of light, so wider openings get two shades side by side, set to move together. We confirm the exact limit for the operating system when we measure.

Which shades can be made in Roma Blackout White Backing?

Roma Blackout White Backing is a roller shade fabric. We buy it from TOP Window Covering by the roll and make the shades ourselves in our Fort Lauderdale workroom: cut square, finished with a weighted hem bar and fitted to a Lutron, Somfy or Crestron motor or a manual chain, then installed by our own team from Miami to Palm Beach.

Can I see Roma Blackout White Backing samples before ordering?

Yes. Shortlist the colours here and we bring TOP samples of them to the in-home consultation, so you can hold them against your own glass in your own light. Our Fort Lauderdale workroom (4539 Powerline Rd, by appointment) and Miami Beach showroom (500 South Pointe Dr #150) have motorized shades running if you want to see one move.
