A linen-textured blackout that shows its colour outside, up to 118 inches wide

Linen Look Blackout Color Backing is TOP Window Covering's blackout with a linen-like surface and the back finished in the face colour, so the shade shows the street the same colour it shows the room. Despite the name it is 100% polyester, with an acrylic foam coating, 0.5 mm thick and 360 g/m2, on 240 and 300 cm rolls, about 94.5 and 118 inches. TOP pictures eleven colours, among them Desert, Nature, Cedar and Lava, and at the dark end Indigo, Dark Brown and Black. It is for bedrooms and media rooms where the shade is part of the design on both sides of the glass.

Six more colours sit on TOP's datasheet without a picture, listed with the 300 cm roll: Crème, Soft Yellow, Sky Blue, Gray, Dark Blue and a second Brown. They are the only colours with published figures, and they show what a colour back does in the sun. All six publish Tv 0, yet solar reflectance falls from 57.7% in Crème to 14.3% in that Brown, which absorbs 85.7% of the sun's energy at the glass. The eleven pictured colours have no published rows. The trade-off is heat at the dark end, and a light-fastness rating of 4 on the side that faces the sun.

Best Use & Limits

What Linen Look Blackout does on your glass, and what it does not

Best use

Bedrooms and media rooms in houses with dark frames or tinted glass, and wide sliders up to about 118 inches that need one shade. Take Black, Indigo or Dark Brown where the facade is dark and the window is shaded; take Crème, Sky Blue or Soft Yellow where the sun lands on the glass. For a colour-backed blackout on wide glass, this is the card.

Privacy

Nothing reads through the cloth at any hour; the six colours with published figures show Tv 0, and the rest carry TOP's blackout class. The colour back changes the view from the street, not the privacy. What does give a room away is the light that escapes down the sides of a roller after dark, which side channels stop.

Glare control

Down, it removes the glare and the daylight together: a projector or a television works at any hour, a desk does not. In the six published colours no light and no solar energy pass the cloth. A low sun lined up with the window still finds the side gaps, so a west-facing media room wants channels from the start.

Limitations

Do not choose a dark colour for unshaded west glass expecting it to keep the room cool: the datasheet Brown absorbs 85.7% of the sun's energy and holds that heat right at the window. It is also the wrong card for a condo that requires a white street side, it gives no daylight or view, and TOP lists no fire rating. A white-backed Sorrento solves the facade question.

Tv = visible light transmitted, Ts = solar energy transmitted, Rs = solar energy reflected, As = solar energy absorbed, Tuv = UV transmitted, in percent for the fabric alone, as published on TOP's datasheet; a dash means TOP publishes no figure for that colour. We bring TOP samples of the colours you shortlist to the consultation.

South Florida

Where Linen Look Blackout Color Backing works here

This is the card for a South Florida house with dark frames or tinted glass, where a white shade would read as a bright rectangle from outside: Black, Indigo or Dark Brown keep the elevation dark. On the 300 cm roll a slider up to about 118 inches takes one shade. On unshaded west glass we steer to Crème, Sky Blue or Soft Yellow, which reflect half or more of the sun's energy. In a condo, check the association rules before choosing a dark colour.

Orient Blackout Color Backing is the plainer colour-backed sibling, paler on the whole, with a higher light-fastness rating but only the narrower roll and no published figures.

Good to Know

Linen Look Blackout Color Backing: frequently asked

Is there any linen in Linen Look?

No. TOP's published composition is 100% polyester; the name describes the surface, not the fiber. That suits a humid house, since TOP lists the fabric as suitable for humid environments and it cleans with a damp cloth. If real linen in the yarn matters to you, TOP's Twinlight Linen zebra fabric has it.

Why do only six colours have figures, and none of those have a picture?

Because that is how TOP publishes this card: the datasheet's optical table lists only Crème, Soft Yellow, Sky Blue, Gray, Dark Blue and the second Brown, and none of the six has a swatch picture on TOP's collection page. We do not carry their numbers over to the eleven pictured colours. For any of the six, we order a physical sample before you decide.

Will the colour fade on the street side?

It can, over time. TOP rates the light-fastness at 4 on the DIN ISO 105-B02 test, the low end of its blackout rollers, and on a colour-backed shade the coloured side is the one facing the sun. On a shaded or north window that matters little. On unshaded west or south glass we would choose a paler colour, or shade the glass from outside.

How wide can a roller shade in TOP Linen Look Blackout Color Backing be?

TOP makes Linen Look Blackout Color Backing in rolls 240 and 300 cm (94.5 and 118 in). The roll width is the widest single piece we can cut, so one roller shade can be made a little under 118 inches wide. A seam in a blackout shows as a line of light, so wider openings get two shades side by side, set to move together. We confirm the exact limit for the operating system when we measure.

Which shades can be made in Linen Look Blackout Color Backing?

Linen Look Blackout Color Backing is a roller shade fabric. We buy it from TOP Window Covering by the roll and make the shades ourselves in our Fort Lauderdale workroom: cut square, finished with a weighted hem bar and fitted to a Lutron, Somfy or Crestron motor or a manual chain, then installed by our own team from Miami to Palm Beach.

Can I see Linen Look Blackout Color Backing samples before ordering?

Yes. Shortlist the colours here and we bring TOP samples of them to the in-home consultation, so you can hold them against your own glass in your own light. Our Fort Lauderdale workroom (4539 Powerline Rd, by appointment) and Miami Beach showroom (500 South Pointe Dr #150) have motorized shades running if you want to see one move.
