Charcoal E Screen rewoven to send the heat back out, at 1% and 3%Tier 3Tier 4
E Screen KOOLBLACK is the charcoal end of the E Screen card woven with Mermet's KOOLBLACK yarn, in the Crestron Heritage Collection at 1% and 3% openness. What the yarn does is in Crestron's own solar figures. Plain E Screen Charcoal/Charcoal at 1% openness reflects 4% of the solar energy that reaches it and absorbs 95%; the KOOLBLACK Charcoal/Charcoal at the same openness reflects 35% and absorbs 53%. Across the card the KOOLBLACK charcoals reflect 34% to 40% where the plain E Screen charcoals reflect 3% to 18%. The view through the weave stays a charcoal screen's view, and the heat a charcoal normally holds at the glass goes back out through it.
The card is five charcoal pairings, Charcoal with Apricot, Charcoal, Cocoa, Gray or Gray-Stone, each at both openness factors, ten colourways in all. Four of the five names repeat exactly on plain E Screen, and the fifth, Charcoal/Gray, is spelled Charcoal/Grey there. Crestron prices the two weaves differently: the 3% colourways sit in Tier 3 and the 1% colourways in Tier 4, the top column of the budget grid on this page, and the 1% weave comes on a 116-inch roll against 120 inches for the 3%. Those two facts, rather than the colour, usually decide which weave goes on a wide living-room wall.
Woven by Mermet; the mill's full data is on our Mermet KOOLBLACK fabrics page.
What E Screen KOOLBLACK does on your glass, and what it does not
Best use
West and south-west glass, and any window where a client wants charcoal and the room runs warm: an ocean-facing living room in the afternoon, a media room with a wall of sliders, a south-west bedroom. 1% openness where screens are in the room or the sun sits square on the glass; 3% openness for the water view. On a north or shaded elevation, plain E Screen charcoal does the same job for less.
Privacy
What any charcoal solar screen gives: some cover by day at 1% openness, less at 3% openness, and less than a pale weave in either, because a charcoal throws little daylight back at the street. After dark, with a lamp on, the room reads through both; the yarn changes what happens to heat, not what can be seen. A bedroom gets a blackout or light-filtering layer behind it on a dual roller.
Glare control
Charcoal at 1% openness is about as much glare control as a solar screen gives: Crestron's visible transmittance for the card runs from 2% to 7%, so a television stays watchable with the shade down while the water still reads through the weave. The 3% openness keeps more of the view and lets a little more sparkle onto a screen. A low sun sitting square in the window shows through both, as through every screen.
Limitations
It darkens nothing and comes in charcoal only, so a pale room or a bedroom needs another fabric or a second layer. Crestron does not railroad or seam it, so a wall wider than the roll is two shades on one line, met at a mullion, and the 1% weave is the narrower roll. Where the glass is shaded the extra tier buys little; plain E Screen in the same name is the better spend.

Colourways
Every E Screen KOOLBLACK colourway, with Crestron's published figures
Ts = solar energy transmitted, Rs = solar energy reflected, As = solar energy absorbed and Tv = visible light transmitted, in percent, as Crestron publishes them in its fabric shop and its Fabric Information Guide (revision 3.23.26) for each colourway; Ts, Rs and As add up to 100. Openness is Crestron's figure; width is the usable roll width. We bring samples of the colours you shortlist to the consultation.

The guide excludes control processors, keypads, interfaces, wiring, power supplies, programming and installation. Source (PDF).
Figures are Crestron's own budgetary MSRP guide of June 2022 for one motorized 5 Series roller shade, motor included, before options. They exclude the control system, wiring, power, programming and installation, and Crestron may have changed them since. We quote every project at the measure.
Where E Screen KOOLBLACK works here
KOOLBLACK is the answer when a client on the ocean side of Sunny Isles Beach or Bal Harbour wants charcoal on glass that takes the afternoon sun. We specify the 1% openness on a west or south-west wall and in rooms with screens, the 3% openness in living areas facing the water, and bring the plain E Screen book to the same appointment so the two charcoals can be held against the glass. The extra tier or two is the trade for a charcoal that does not warm the room.
E Screen KOOLBLACK is the E Screen charcoal card rewoven to send heat back out, at 1% and 3% only and a tier or two above plain E Screen; M Screen carries the same charcoal names at 3% and 5% without the heat-reflective yarn, and S Screen is a separate four-colour weave at 4%.
E Screen KOOLBLACK: frequently asked
Is KOOLBLACK worth a tier or two more than a plain E Screen charcoal?
On glass that takes the sun, yes; on shaded glass, usually not. Crestron's figures for Charcoal/Charcoal at 3% openness read 5% reflected and 91% absorbed in plain E Screen, and 34% reflected and 49% absorbed in KOOLBLACK. A charcoal that absorbs nine tenths of the sun warms and radiates it into the room from the glass; a west living room or a south-west bedroom feels that every afternoon. A north-facing study never does, and there the plain E Screen charcoal in the same name is the better spend.
Can a KOOLBLACK shade have the fabric-wrapped hembar?
No. Crestron lists three hembars for E Screen KOOLBLACK, the Open Pocket, the Sealed Pocket and the Exposed Blackout, and not the Designer Half-Wrap that plain E Screen can carry. In a pocket or behind a fascia the Open Pocket hembar, taped inside a welded pocket with its ends painted to coordinate, is what we draw, and it is rarely noticed. On an open Decor mount, where the roll and the hembar are the finish, a client who wants the wrapped rail chooses plain E Screen in the same charcoal.
Is there a 5% or 10% KOOLBLACK?
Not from Crestron, which stocks E Screen KOOLBLACK at 1% and 3% openness only. Those are the two weaves the fabric is for: it exists for glass that takes hard sun, and that glass wants a tight weave. For a shaded elevation that can be more open, the plain E Screen card carries the same charcoal names at 5% and 10%, at a lower tier, so a house runs KOOLBLACK on the hot side and plain E Screen everywhere else without a change of colour.
What does a Crestron shade in E Screen KOOLBLACK cost?
Crestron places this fabric in price Tier 3. Its budgetary guide of June 2022 lists a motorized 5 Series roller shade in a Tier 3 fabric at $1,200 for 3 ft x 5 ft, $1,600 for 5 ft x 10 ft and $2,000 for 10 ft x 10 ft, MSRP, motor included, before options, control, wiring and installation. Options, the control system, wiring and installation are on top; we quote the finished shade at the measure.
How wide can a Crestron shade in E Screen KOOLBLACK be?
Crestron lists a usable roll width of 120 inches or 116 inches for E Screen KOOLBLACK; it is not railroaded, so an opening wider than the roll takes two shades side by side, coupled on one bracket with the light gap set at a mullion. We confirm the limit for the chosen hardware when we measure.
Is Crestron E Screen KOOLBLACK the same fabric as the mill's?
Crestron buys E Screen KOOLBLACK from Mermet and lists it under its own SKUs and price tier. The weave is the one on our Mermet KOOLBLACK fabrics page, where the mill's full optical and fire data lives; Crestron's page here shows the colourways and openness Crestron actually stocks for its shades.
