A 5% basketweave on a polyester core, in ten one-name coloursTier 2

SheerWeave 4500 is a 5% openness basketweave whose yarn is polyester rather than fiberglass: Crestron's Fabric Information Guide lists it as 17% polyester and 83% vinyl, the vinyl coated onto a polyester core, where the 2500 and 2700 series and E Screen are vinyl over fiberglass. On the glass it does the job of any 5% screen, and Crestron handles it the same way, on a 124-inch roll, railroaded and seamed where a shade outgrows it. It is the more open half of a two-weave family with SheerWeave 4600, which carries the same ten colours at 3%, and Phifer's page for both is SheerWeave 4500 and 4600.

The card is ten colours with one name each rather than the two-tone pairs of the 2500 and 2700 series: Chalk, Linen, Ecru, Golden Sand, Sandstone, Granite, Pewter, Capuccino, Dark Bronze and Ebony. Crestron spells Capuccino on the colourway and Cappuccino in its description line; it is one colour. The spread across the card is wide. Chalk reflects 74% of the solar energy that reaches it and transmits 12%; Ebony transmits 5% and absorbs 92%; Granite splits evenly, 47% reflected and 47% absorbed. Visible transmission stays inside a narrow band, 7% to 12%, so even the palest colour keeps the glare in check for a weave this open.

Woven by Phifer; the mill's full data is on our Phifer SheerWeave 4500/4600 page.

Best Use & Limits

What SheerWeave 4500 does on your glass, and what it does not

Best use

The rooms where a 5% weave is right and the scheme wants one even colour: a den off a screened lanai, a north-facing home office, a breakfast room under the balcony above, a stair landing, a guest bedroom on the shaded side. Ebony or Dark Bronze when the water is the point, Chalk or Linen when the room is the point. On the sunlit south and west glass of the same house, use 4600 instead.

Privacy

Daytime only, and colour decides how much. Chalk, Linen and Ecru send most of the daylight back at the street and cover the room reasonably well until dusk; Ebony, Dark Bronze and Capuccino give the clearest view out and, for the same reason, the clearest view in. After dark, with a lamp lit, every colour on the card shows the room. A second layer on a dual roller is what closes it.

Glare control

Steady across the card: the visible-light figures on 4500 sit close together, so the pale colours do not run away the way they do on the fiberglass cards. Ebony and Dark Bronze keep a television across the room usable through the afternoon; Chalk keeps the room bright and leaves a soft glow on a monitor. When glare is the complaint, the sun-side rooms go to 4600, or to a 1% weave such as 2500.

Limitations

It gives no privacy at night and no darkness at any hour; a bedroom needs a blackout behind it. The dark three hold heat at the glass, Ebony most of all, and a pale colour hazes the water on a clear day. No weave this open will quiet a room or take a low sun out of a window it sits square in. Where the specification excludes vinyl, see SheerWeave Infinity 2 instead.

Ts = solar energy transmitted, Rs = solar energy reflected, As = solar energy absorbed and Tv = visible light transmitted, in percent, as Crestron publishes them in its fabric shop and its Fabric Information Guide (revision 3.23.26) for each colourway; Ts, Rs and As add up to 100. Openness is Crestron's figure; width is the usable roll width. We bring samples of the colours you shortlist to the consultation.

The guide excludes control processors, keypads, interfaces, wiring, power supplies, programming and installation. Source (PDF).

Figures are Crestron's own budgetary MSRP guide of June 2022 for one motorized 5 Series roller shade, motor included, before options. They exclude the control system, wiring, power, programming and installation, and Crestron may have changed them since. We quote every project at the measure.

South Florida

Where SheerWeave 4500 works here

We specify 4500 where a 5% screen is right and the client wants a single colour rather than a two-tone weave: a family room under a terrace in Boca Raton, an east-facing bedroom where the morning sun arrives filtered, a north slider wall. Ebony or Dark Bronze face the water, Sandstone and Granite sit with a warm interior, Chalk and Linen keep a pale room pale. On the south and west glass of the same house we move to 4600 in the same colour, so the weaves read as one.

SheerWeave 4500 is the 5% half of the polyester-core pair, ten one-name colours on a 124-inch roll; 4600 is the same card at 3%, the other vinyl Phifer weaves at 5% here, 2390 in two-tones and 2705 as a dual-sided twill, are fiberglass under the coating, and Infinity 2 is the PVC-free one on a 96-inch roll.

Good to Know

SheerWeave 4500: frequently asked

What does the polyester core change against a fiberglass screen?

The yarn under the vinyl. On 4500 it is polyester, 17% of the cloth by Crestron's guide, with 83% vinyl over it; on SheerWeave 2390, the fiberglass Phifer weave at the same openness in this programme, it is 35% to 37% fiberglass with the balance vinyl. The openness, the roll width, the railroading and the Tier 2 place in the budget grid are the same. Crestron's care note about small edge frays over time is written for PVC-coated fiberglass yarns.

Which 4500 colour for a room that has to stay light?

Chalk, Linen or Ecru. Chalk reflects the most solar energy of the card, Linen 63% and Ecru 56%, and all three keep the room bright with the shade down; the price is a hazier view, which is what any pale screen does. Golden Sand and Sandstone are the warm middle, with more absorbed than reflected. Where the view matters more than the brightness, Pewter or Granite are the last stop before the dark three, Capuccino, Dark Bronze and Ebony.

What does a Crestron shade in SheerWeave 4500 cost?

Crestron places this fabric in price Tier 2. Its budgetary guide of June 2022 lists a motorized 5 Series roller shade in a Tier 2 fabric at $1,000 for 3 ft x 5 ft, $1,300 for 5 ft x 10 ft and $1,600 for 10 ft x 10 ft, MSRP, motor included, before options, control, wiring and installation. Options, the control system, wiring and installation are on top; we quote the finished shade at the measure.

How wide can a Crestron shade in SheerWeave 4500 be?

Crestron lists a usable roll width of 124 inches for SheerWeave 4500; the fabric can be railroaded, turned 90 degrees on the roll, so one shade can run wider than the roll as long as it is no taller than the roll width, and where it is taller Crestron joins two widths with a horizontal seam, which we line up with a mullion or a transom. We confirm the limit for the chosen hardware when we measure.

Is Crestron SheerWeave 4500 the same fabric as the mill's?

Crestron buys SheerWeave 4500 from Phifer and lists it under its own SKUs and price tier. The weave is the one on our Phifer SheerWeave 4500/4600 page, where the mill's full optical and fire data lives; Crestron's page here shows the colourways and openness Crestron actually stocks for its shades.
