The 116-inch Coulisse pair with both weaves in Tier 1Tier 1

Mika is the wider of the paired Coulisse fabrics and the one where the light-filtering cloth and its blackout twin sit in the same tier. Eight colours, Snow White, Bleached Sand, Limestone, Oyster Gray, Clay, Moth, Gray Anthracite and Dark Shadow, come in both: a light-filtering weave with an openness factor under 1% that turns the window into a soft, even light with no view through it, and a blackout of the same name that closes it. Both are 100% polyester on a 116-inch roll, which covers a 9 ft slider in one drop, and every row, light-filtering or blackout, sits in Tier 1 of the budget grid on this page.

Crestron will seam Mika but not railroad it, so a shade wider than 116 inches is made with a vertical seam we put on a mullion, or as two shades on one line. The blackout is dual sided, the same face inside and out, which matters on a window the street sees and on Decor hardware where the roll itself is on show; the light-filtering weave is single faced, and its reverse is what shows from the balcony. The two weaves are built to share a room: the light-filtering cloth in front on a dual roller for the day, the blackout behind it for the night, in one colour.

Best Use & Limits

What Mika does on your glass, and what it does not

Best use

With both weaves in the same tier, cost does not steer the choice; the room does. A primary bedroom takes the two together, matched by name, on a dual roller. A media room or a nursery takes the blackout on its own, in side channels. A living room, study or bath overlooked by a neighbour takes the light-filtering Mika on its own. A family room that is also the TV room takes both.

Privacy

In daylight nobody reads the room through the light-filtering Mika; from outside it is simply cloth. After sunset the balance flips, and a lamp inside puts silhouettes on the shade, so any bedroom or bath within a neighbour's view needs the blackout down at night. The blackout Mika hides the room completely at every hour; what escapes is a sliver of light at each edge, the gap side channels close.

Glare control

Direct sun through the light-filtering Mika becomes a glow across the whole shade instead of a bright patch on the floor. That suits a bath or a study with the desk side-on to the window, not a television or a monitor facing it, where the glow is the glare. Dark Shadow or Gray Anthracite keeps that glow quieter than Snow White. For a screen wall, lower the blackout and give up the daylight.

Limitations

Neither weave shows the view, so Mika belongs on glass nobody looks out of; a canal or an ocean view wants a solar screen. The light-filtering weave will not darken a room on its own. Past the roll width the shade takes a vertical seam, which on the light-filtering weave shows as a line whenever the sun is behind it; two shades on one line avoid that.

Ts = solar energy transmitted, Rs = solar energy reflected, As = solar energy absorbed and Tv = visible light transmitted, in percent, as Crestron publishes them in its fabric shop and its Fabric Information Guide (revision 3.23.26) for each colourway; Ts, Rs and As add up to 100. Openness is Crestron's figure; width is the usable roll width. We bring samples of the colours you shortlist to the consultation.

What It Costs

What a Crestron shade in Mika costs

The guide excludes control processors, keypads, interfaces, wiring, power supplies, programming and installation. Source (PDF).

Figures are Crestron's own budgetary MSRP guide of June 2022 for one motorized 5 Series roller shade, motor included, before options. They exclude the control system, wiring, power, programming and installation, and Crestron may have changed them since. We quote every project at the measure.

Where Mika works here

Mika is our answer for the wide bedroom sliders of a Fort Lauderdale or Pompano Beach house on a canal, where 9 ft of glass wants one shade and the neighbour across the water sees the back of it. We put the blackout in the primary suite, usually with the light-filtering weave in front of it on a dual bracket, and run the light-filtering Mika alone in the baths and the study. Where the same client's living room faces the Intracoastal, that window gets a solar screen instead, and Mika stays in the rooms behind it.

Mika is the 116-inch pair with both weaves in Tier 1 and a dual-sided blackout; Bella and Nava are the 98-inch pairs, Bella the only one that railroads, and Merinda is the 118-inch pair with the Half-Wrap hembar and no seam.

Good to Know

Mika: frequently asked

Is the Mika blackout the same colour on both sides?

Yes. Crestron lists the Mika blackout as dual sided, which means the face the street sees is the same colour as the face in the room; the light-filtering Mika is single faced, so its reverse differs. On a Decor bracket, where the roll is exposed and its back faces the room, that makes the blackout the tidier choice. On Architectural hardware with a fascia or a pocket, only the reverse against the glass shows, and only from outside.

How do you make a Mika bedroom dark?

The blackout Mika passes no light; the edges are the work. An inside mount leaves a gap of about three quarters of an inch at each side, so on a bedroom that has to sleep late we specify Crestron's side channels and sill angle with the Exposed Blackout hembar, or an outside mount that overlaps the frame. A dual roller adds the light-filtering Mika in front so the room has a daytime setting as well as a night one.

Does Mika suit a bathroom?

Yes, in the light-filtering weave: full privacy from outside by day, daylight in, and Crestron's care line for Mika is a damp or a dry cloth, which suits a room with steam; Crestron also lists the fabric as mould and bacteria resistant. A bath on a ground floor or facing a terrace wants the blackout at night, or a dual roller with both; an upper-floor bath with no sightline can stay with the light-filtering shade alone.

What does a Crestron shade in Mika cost?

Crestron places this fabric in price Tier 1. Its budgetary guide of June 2022 lists a motorized 5 Series roller shade in a Tier 1 fabric at $900 for 3 ft x 5 ft, $1,100 for 5 ft x 10 ft and $1,400 for 10 ft x 10 ft, MSRP, motor included, before options, control, wiring and installation. Options, the control system, wiring and installation are on top; we quote the finished shade at the measure.

How wide can a Crestron shade in Mika be?

Crestron lists a usable roll width of 116 inches for Mika; it is not railroaded, so an opening wider than the roll takes two shades side by side, coupled on one bracket with the light gap set at a mullion. We confirm the limit for the chosen hardware when we measure.
